Shaemon
I do think though that if Will does die then that will leave it open for Jack and Elizabeth. I think Will's death is the only way Jack and Elizabeth will get it together...

Yes, I think you're right.

Also, it would be just like Disney to put in an excuse like that for the compass to be pointing at Jack. I hope they don't. I hope it is what it is because I'm losing faith in Disney very quickly, and this movie is all that keeps my hope alive. ^^

***SPOILERS for Pirates 2***

Get ready, my theory schpeel is long and complicated. mrgreen

I think that they're setting it up for Will to die (*ducks assorted objects thrown from fangirls*). Wait! Don't hurt me! Hear me out, this is logically based!

You see. *ahem*

In DMC, Tia Dalma goes on and on about a "touch of destiny" about Will, but she's never seen him before in her life (that we know of anyway). Now, I dunno about you, but Tia strikes me as the voodoo witchy type that might be able to do things like see the future (can't imagine how I could think that... ^^). I think that Will is going to end up dying while trying to save everyone. Or even just someone. But I do think he will die.

Also, they're setting up a potential Jack/Liz relationship what with the compass pointing to Jack... three times, I believe (once when she first gets it, once on the ship after they talk, and once on the island- I'm sure I'm missing some, but anyway...), and the compass points steadily to Elizabeth when Jack holds it on the island. It didn't point to the chest before whenever Jack held it, so why should it start then?

Now then, I know it's not the "Disney Way," but I really hope I'm right about this. At least in the general details of a dead Will (though I love Orli so!) and a Jack/Liz relationship. But, yes. I hope I'm right because that will give me faith that Disney still knows how to write a good story when they want to.

Well, that was long... rolleyes

wow that is such a neat thought!
lol
good job dissecting xD

Well, it seems I may have been wrong about the letters of marque. crying Shoot.

This was supposedly written by Ted Elliott and posted on keeptothecode.com, but I think it's in the members only section and I don't have a membership there so I can't verify it.

Ted Elliott
The reason we included the "Why is the rum always gone?" line was not just as a callback to the first movie; it was intended to remind audiences of the specific circumstances that it referenced, and so act as a cue to what Jack had on his mind: the woman who he was first attracted to and then infuriated with (or: the woman who Jack never would have been infuriated with if he had not been attracted to).

So, the deal with compass: Jack simultaneously wanted Elizabeth and wanted to be as far from Elizabeth as possible. Whichever of those he wanted most would cause him to immediately want the other more ... so the compass would not settle, swinging between "Port Royal" and "antipode of Port Royal" (which is sort-of-but-not-quite Singapore, btw).

There was much debate about whether, in the first scene aboard the Pearl, to show the compass pointing in a specific direction and have Jack set course in the opposite direction, or to show it as it is in the movie. I think the first would have made it more clear to the audience that something weird was going on with Jack ("he's not going where the compass points? What's up with that?"), but the second is actually more demonstrative of his emotional state)(at least, that was the theory).

And, as long as I'm breaking silence on the compass, let me just say: there's no transference. If it points to a waffle, it's not pointing to the waffle because you're hungry or because you really want to be Belgian or something; it points to the waffle 'cause what you want most is that waffle.

Of course, if you've been hungry for a while, anticipating the most delicious meal you could ever imagine, and for some reason you couldn't partake of that meal, and then you found yourself in the presence of a very interesting waffle ... well, that doesn't mean that you suddenly think the aforementioned meal would not be delicious. It just means that, right then, that waffle seems pretty tempting.

Does that make you a terrible person?

Shaemon
Electric Roses
Will... because I think leaving him for Jack is just the very wrong, fan girl thing to do. Just because he's hot doesn't mean she should go off with him... She's had years to fall in love with Will, it's a sweet story, I just don't much like the idea of her running of with a guy she just lusts after. Not only that, he only really lusts after her, the way he treats her doesn't really say "I love you", just "I'm deseperate, I'm a pirate, give me some". Plus Will's a bit of a loser, he has to get her in the end for that if for no other reason lol. Also shaemon is right... it's a disney film... hardly a good disney-type-moral there is it? lol

I agree. The loser must get the girl. 3nodding

Besides...Jack was eaten wink We all know he survives...

Will + Elizabeth. I think Jack is supposed to be a wild, free entity, not tied down by anything -- especially not a whiny woman. >.>
