If the grass is frozen, the herbivores can't eat it, and they die, and so the carnivores can't eat them, and so all the animals would die. We could be vegetarian, as the mover people would be able to gather plants for the rest of us, but if the plants are frozen, no new ones will grow, and we'll eventually eat ourselves into oblivion. I really like this idea, being extremely original and whatnot, but my hyperactive little brain doesn't see any conclusion other than us all dying.
I can only think of one suggestion to make it work, but it has its own repercussions you may or may not want to deal with. What if the people, while still motile, were biologically frozen? Whatever state their body was in when the great freezing happened, they stay in. That way they wouldn't have to eat. However, it would also mean that, barring accident or foulplay, they're immortal, as being biologically frozen would mean that their organs wouldn't deteriorate. Immortality would be a pretty big thing to add to the mix, so you'd want to decide if you want to go there. Now, this being fantasy, you could easily make part of the spell or whatever be that they still die at some point. In that case, they would also have to be able to have children, and if those children didn't grow, you'd end up with an awful lot of babies laying around. But if they grow, that means that they're biologically dynamic, which means they'd have to eat. I suppose they could eat the animals, and then at some point when they were fully grown they would go into the same condition as everyone else, but that would mean the animals' young ate each other too, which means eventually we'd run out of herbivores, and there would be nothing for the children to eat, and they'd all die.
Alternatively, you could think of a better adjustment than mine. Or, you could just avoid all that, and not touch some of the ecological whatnot. Nobody is particularly concerned about why Tolkein's world isn't overrun with elves (since they can have children but can't die).
Is Sable paying too much attention in biology? Yes she is.

Middle Earth isn't overrun by elves because elves don't have any sort of sex-drive whatsoever. Anybody who reads enough of the right fanfiction knows that. 3nodding That's why elven aphrodesiac is so strong.

Oh. Ow. Braincramp. XD

Actually, I'd just planned into not getting into the story in-depth enough for it to have become a problem yet. >___>

The flash-freeze would have been fairly recent, say a few years back (although they would have eaten through a fair share of animals by then I'm sure X__X).

One of the issues raised in the story is that the wealthy who have to hire people to do things have no means of generating income -- BUT they have to pay the Alterers. So the Mr. Rich b***h character (*Cough*Yukio*Cough*) works himself into a snit about how the classes will be COMPLETELY overthrown, and eventually the Alterers will be the only people left alive because they'll be the only ones who can DO THINGS and have MONEY.

I...finally...figured out the random holiday I need to use as a catalyst for the second half of my plot. *tears of relief* I just want to run it past all of you right now. ^_^

Quote:
Rememberance Day: (for lack of a better name)
This is a day observed by all non-Northern cultures (Northerners might celebrate it, but there's little way of any of the characters knowing one way or another). The day serves as a memorial to the dead, specifically dead loved ones. Throughout the day people in large cities will go to the temple(s) to offer flower bouquets in memory of their departed family and friends. In smaller towns, where there might not be a temple per se, the houses are instead strung with flower garlands.

It is customary for one to offer a small bouquet for every deceased immediate family member/close friend. There are exceptions, of course, in the case of people who have suffered extensive losses in their family. These people can offer a single large bouquet. An exception is also made for extremely poor people (like Vitae) who can only afford single flowers due to the fact that they're paying with money they found in the gutter. ninja

At high noon on this day the priest(s) of the temple(s) hold memorial services. People also visit gravesites throughout the day.

This day is the only reason local flower sellers don't starve when winter sets in.
ninja

I decided on a rememberance day as a way to point out the fact that nearly all of my characters have lost family members. It'll be a tactful way to draw attention to the losses of certain characters (like Jericho) whose family stories wouldn't otherwise come out with the plot.

I've always liked the idea you've had behind that holiday. 3nodding Hurrah for creative ways to show backstory without having the characters sit around a campfire and one-by-one go LOL, BACKSTORY!

Now for mah kwestion.

Okay, guys, I need you to summon your powers of character abuse and help a woman out.

So. In my NaNo, I have kind of a vague idea of a plot twist I want to occur, but I want it figured out before I get to it chronologically.

Character A wants to maliciously cause Character B to lose his voice. His motive is to ruin him -- Character B is in a profession that requires use of his voice. Without being able to speak, he has no job (and since his job is his passion, this wouldn't just cause him to lose a job; it'd be a big part of his life).

In any case. Character A can very easily get Character B drunk to the point his memory gets fuzzy/pain isn't exactly felt keenly, which kind of strengthens the situation.

But.

I have utterly no clue how to have Character A damage Character B's throat/voice.

It would have to be instantaneous -- he wouldn't have the nerve to slowly poison Character B in a way that effected his throat or what have you. And it would have to be ... quick. Like, cutting off the character's tongue is out of the question, simply because he wouldn't have the guts to go through with something that took that much precision and time.

I would definetely want it to be physical (psychological trauma that rendered a person speechless always felt a little campy in stories to me). And ... you know, if a long recovery time with Character B all bandaged up around the neck, on a liquid diet, and scrawling out "I AM IN PAAAAAAAAIN" on a notepad is included ... that would be great. xd

OK, it's a stretch, but this is the best Wikipedia has to offer.

Vocal chord paresis is a condition that causes relatively severe fatigue of the voice, hoarseness, and pain in speaking. It can be caused by intubation. Now, if a doctor who's been to medical school for years and knows what they're doing can cause that by sticking a specially made tube down a person's throat using a technique that has been perfected for years to minimize throat damage, I can see how Character A shoving a stick down Character B's throat could cause complete and permanent loss of voice. Even if it after a while it was possible for Character B to speak, his voice would sound really weird. Judging by your description, it sounds like it might be a bit too extreme an action for Character A to do, but it's the only thing I could turn up that's an anatomically feasible way of making a person lose their voice.

Stick down the throat, eh? *scratches chin thoughtfully* That might work ... but, I dunno. To do that he'd have to fight through gag reflexes and throat muscles going LOLWTFNO!, and I dunno if he'd have it in him.

Wimpy characters always make things harder. gonk

I can see him, say, cutting someone's throat -- quick, and all he has to do is cringe and then press really hard -- but. Ur. That'd kill Character B. ;.;

Thanks, though. biggrin

Well, maybe Character B can be hopped up on drugs or something? I mean, if alcohol or whatever-else-have-you can lower inhibitions/make people bolder, why couldn't something similar also steel wimpy little Character B into shoving a stick (or champagne bottle wink ) down Character A's throat?

Now there's an idea. Although I'd have to think of how to get him access to drugs. I swear, stuff like this is such a pain when Janus isn't in the story.

That's easy enough, though. But I dunno if I want a stick ... I was hoping for something ... slicey and dicey. *scratches head* A stick-shoving scene would be extraordinarily awkward to write.
And Character A, the attacker, is Zhao, coincidentally. Character B you guys don't know.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 08, 2006 6:43 pm

I vote you do it POTO style. If it worked for the Phanty, it can work for you! After all, Zhao isn't a doctor, and he can use more of what TAOM (the Angel of Moosic) used for more permanent results. Especially if he mixes it with the aforementioned alcohol. Plus, it's a wimpy way to do it, which matches Zhao's personality better. After all, Zhao's not the kind of person who would just LOL! I shove stick down yer throt now that yer drunker than a skunker!111!!!!!!!!1eleventy11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!oneoneoneoneoneoneone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111!!!!!!

I believe what Erika is going for is something a bit more realistic than what the Phantom pulled. I also believe she's had an epiphany that will allow her to solve this problem, and has simply neglected telling us. ninja

Yeah. @@;; I'm still open for ideas, though. gonk

I think I'll just cut scene before it happens, per say. Lead up to it but go to another scene before the actual damage is inflicted.
Though, if I'm sticking to my idea of having it from the POV of just one character, then this won't be a problem anyway since he won't be present for the scene. He'll just hear about it in the morning.

I don't know if you're still looking for a solution to your problem or not. Maybe the one character could slip something caustic in the other's drink? If you get them to the hospital quickly enough, it'll just burn them bad enough to have them lose their voice for a while and be in terrible pain, but not die.
