Jane followed him through the mansion, curving down halfways and corridors until they had reached an impressive and stately door. Upon opening it, the smell of old parchment and leather floated towards her and drew her in like a moth to lamplight. There was such a magnificent collection of books surrounding her that she felt small and childlike in comparison. She was speechless. To be given use of such a magnificent place made her feel incredibly grateful. With Mingan gone, she walked over to a stack of books and sorted through them. There were travel journals and regional histories of various countries. There was also an assortment of fiction that struck her fancy. She would return here tomorrow and read to her heart's content, but for now she should retire and rest up for a busy day.

Returning to her room, Jane took account of the stack of work clothes that had been delivered in her absence. They seemed to be able to fit, and were sturdy enough to not tear while in the gardens. Gently removing her evening gown, the woman prepared herself for bed and dressed in her simple and comfortable nightgown. Plopping down in the pile of brown blankets she fell asleep almost instantly. Hopefully tomorrow wouldn't bring too much hardship.
--------

Miss, it's six o'clock! A maid called through the door and knocked on it viciously. Jane sat up, startled, and looked around the room in a brief moment of confusion. She had nearly forgotten where she was, until yesterday's occurrences came flooding back. The woman hurried out of bed, splashed a bit of water on her face, and got dressed in the work clothes delivered the previous evening. They fit well, although she had to add a chemisette to make the neckline more modest. She opened the door and followed the rush of servants to breakfast, held in a room just off the kitchen. Here is where the help ate, separate from the rest of the household. Jane ate her fill and was called upon to wait in the gardens. She took her leave and hastily found her way to her workplace to wait for instructions.

---------

A rather exquisite carriage was pulling into view of the estate, clouds of dust being kicked up behind it. Inside was a remarkably lovely woman, dressed elegantly for travel. Her blond curls were pinned elaborately atop her head, and her figure was complemented by a beautiful muslin day dress. She had a girlishness about her that drew in strangers like flies to sugar water. Her disposition was cheery and her assumed wealth was great. This was Emma Bingley, a long time friend of the Adelgunde inheritor. Her husband journeyed with the regiment very summer and in stead of joining him like other military wives did, Emma preferred to spend her days visiting friends. The carriage pulled to a stop and the fashionable woman exited, an eager smile on her face.

Morning had shown up through the windows again. Mingan had woke up early as usual to go hunting with Derick. He left early to go off along with the dogs and the horses. They went through the usual while everyone else cooked. Mingan would dine by himself at breakfast as usual, as Jane would be eating with everyone else. He makes sure he doesn't hunt too much, as the food from the hunts yesterday and the day before that were stored. He just went after a turkey for today and came back to the kitchen staff to clean it up.

After breakfast was over, he took note of one of the servants coming to him. "Yes?" "S-Someone seems to have stopped in front of the manor." With that Mingan stood up. "Whose is it?!" "Uuuuh....Emma?" "Emma?" His face brightened up a bit. Emma Bingley was one of his trusted friends, and dare say his first love. If only she hadn't married but he could not blame her, he was not the ideal-looking husband. "What you doing then?! Bring her in! Bring out the fruit platter!" He then stood up and made sure he looked his best, with his hair put up in a ponytail and his clothes having no sign of stains or dirt.

His servant opened the door for Emma. "Hello Mrs.Bingley. Master is waiting for you at the garden." Mingan meanwhile made sure everything was ready for Emma's arrival. In all honestly, Emma and her family (not the husband's side anyway) are the only ones to know of Mingan's identity so when they come over, it was a relief for him. So once Emma arrived, it took Mingan some restraint to stop staring at her so longingly, but instead like a friend would look. "Emma! It's a pleasure to see you again!" He smiled as he then kissed her hand out of proper manners for when a man meets a good friend [who is a female anyways]. "How has life been for you?" He thought about having her walk around the garden. "You must have sat in the carriage for a long time, maybe a walk around the garden shall help?"

Emma nodded at the servant, a polite smile on her face. She loved visiting the estate, with its exuberant grounds and charming style. Of course, she also got to see her dear friend which alone made the long trip worth pursuing every summer. They had been friends for years, playing in the gardens as children or studying together as teenagers. She had always cherished the friend she found in Mingan, but a friend he had always remained. She was a socialite by heart, and although she would never admit it, pursuing a courtship with her ethnic friend would cause too much of a scandal. Charles Bingley, her husband, was a fine and amiable man. He earned a wealthy income and provided her with enough affection. But Emma couldn't say that she felt nothing for the wealthy owner of Adelgunde, though her feelings remained flirtatious by nature.

She heard his voice calling her name, and the blonde felt absolutely thrilled. Mingan! You look well. She offered her hand, of which he kissed, and gave him a good look. Yes, he did seem to be in excellent health. Perhaps he was getting more fresh air. Life has been a bore recently. Not enough parties and far too much time at home. The woman joked. She didn't detest her husband by any means, but he certainly wasn't exciting and thrilling. He spent far too much time talking about war strategies. A walk would be lovely, perhaps you can enlighten me as to what you've been doing since I've seen you last. Still no wife? You better hurry or else you'll end up an old bachelor without an heir. Emma teased lightheartedly and looped her hands around his arm as they began their walk towards the gardens. She hardly suspected Mingan would marry, something that saddened her and made her feel slightly glad. She wanted to see her friend well off, but worried a wife would interrupt their long friendship.

I changed Jane's picture. I thought the new one was more fitting.

I honestly have to say I liked the old picture better. The new one looks too similar to Emma XD

"That is a bore indeed." He commented. He in all honestly did not like the husband she had obtained, he seemed to be more interested in battle strategies and the times of being at the front. It seemed like it was asking for Emma to leave because of the lack of affection and the need to occupy each other's company. He can't say anything though, she saw something in him that Mingan didn't have. Mingan can't blame her though, it was bad reputation to have someone like him as a suitable partner, so he mentally prepared to be a old bachelor without an heir, like Emma had said. "Well I kind of have no choice but to be an old Bachelor dear Emma. It's ok though, I have good friends here and often or not, I do take walks in town once in awhile." He did not mind her looping an arm around his, but it did make his heart beat in pain for a few seconds. It would be nice to have that person for their life. "I might consider adoption, since there are many kids without parents, I am considering having around 3-4 of them." he chuckled a bit. He then had his eye on Jane who was helping some of the others work at the garden. "I did hire another help. For the first time, I am actually full. All the rooms except for guest room are full." He then frowned. "Adwin is at his usual again, sometimes I wonder what it will take to get him away from this area. He has tried to invite the 'heir' here so many times, and is now coming up with theories as to why 'I' am not coming out. It's asking for trouble....you remember Nando? I might have to have him 'pretend' to be the heir so he won't spread lies to everyone in England."

As they continued their walk, he stared at the house which belonged to Adwin and frowned. "Besides that, everything is same old. Well, the Hunningworth family has a new child on their midst...heard it is a baby girl. She is going to have two older brothers now which that is probably the best." He had to ask her though. "How's your family doing? I haven't heard about them for a long time."

Oh please, Mingan, you could have whomever you wished. If not for your character, then your money should lure in someone at least. I know a few good ladies who are in want of a husband. Shall I write to them? Emma said as they continued their walk. The women she knew were all in peculiar circumstances, so they would be eager to accept the hand of a rich man. The woman smiled at her companion's mention of walking into town. At least he was getting out of the house. Too much interior confinement and one would go absolutely mad. Oh my, three to four children? That is quite a sum there Mingan. Emma herself rather liked children, in small numbers anyway. She listened intently as he briefed the past year for her. Oh, Adwin is an old coot. She added before studying a group of workers. One of them seemed far too...studious about her work. Almost like she was recalling school lessons about types of plants or soils. What he really needs is a distraction. Maybe one of his girls will lure him in and keep him preoccupied. I should talk to them and see what I can do. Emma was a star in the social ring in Derbyshire. Her cultured ways were exquisite to the countryfolk.

Emma couldn't help but chuckle at Mingan's idea of using Nando. Perhaps that could work. She paused for a moment, stopping their walk. That is actually a brilliant idea, Mingan. Have him go to the next party and clear up any suspicions. I could give him a few lessons to ensure he plays the part well, and then Adwin could be out of your hair. Of course, we would have to spruce him up a bit, Adwin knows Nando's face. Emma started to walk once more. If there was one thing she loved, it was a good dramatic ensemble. It would give her an excuse to attend a party as well, something she longed for desperately. After all, she was away from her husband, she was determined to have a good time. Oh the Hunningworths have had a girl? How precious. She will surely draw plenty of male suitors. Emma nodded. The family was relatively attractive, and they could use the attention of some wealthy bachelor in the future. Father and mother are well, they send their regards. Charles and I usually visit his family during the holidays, so I haven't had much time with my parents for a while. Emma looked out across the flowers, admiring their aroma and beauty before continuing. No children yet. Charles says he doesn't mind, but his mother is producing quite the pressure for me to produce an heir. Oh, you have no idea how blessed you are to be male, Mingan. What with corsets and baby talk all the time. It becomes rather dreary. She joked. She didn't really want children right now, she still wished to be the star socialite she was.

Mingan chuckled. 'Of course I can have whatever lady with the money I have, but that doesn't seem fun. I want to actually try to get affections, you know me....I hate doing things the easy way." He understood some women are attracted to ANY guy who has the money, probably a safety net so they don't live in poverty...otherwise they could care less. They could have a 'lover' in the background while the 'husband' was just a huge purse. She then made a comment about how three to four children was quite a sum. "Yes it is, but sometimes children have big imaginations, they can make any day a bit...'eventful', a big change from normal routine." As they continued walking, Emma made comments about Adwin and how he needs one of those girls to occupy him. "You realize how many women he goes through? Might as well make 17 wedding cakes and give it to him within a week. I thought dogs easily go through people, but no he takes the cake." He did take note that using Nando was a good idea, to get some weight off the estate's shoulders. But of course, Nando will have to be taught the ways of the wealthy and have a complete 'makeover'. "Agreed, he might not be in favor of that though, but I DID warn him about that." He laughed, knowing of Nando's 'free-spirited' personality, and how often he would rather run around with the horses and explore than be stuck in a house.

"Emma....if you do not want children then don't have them. Taking care of children sometimes is not for everyone. Children have different needs, likes, and dislikes. They are not the same after all. It's best if someone who wants children is prepared for it, not pressured into it. I think it's why there are so many people in poverty, and so many children in orphanages...it's the pressure to have children that causes it. It's why I am slowly preparing myself instead of going square first with my face to an orphanage and go 'HEEEEERE'S DADDY'!" He chortled at his own joke. "And I do realize being a male has more perks than being a male, but of course the responsibility we have kind of makes us wish we are women, so we can just take a day to watch the sun and relax for a bit."

He then could see Emma was staring off to someone who seemed...more into her work. "That's Jane, she is the new helper from yesterday. I have her on garden duty and from her own little 'tour' she loves the area." He then stared at the worker before continuing the walk. "Remember the lake we used to play in as kids? It seemed to have grown a bit bigger when you left...I think the lake missed you and secret tears flow from it."

Emma nodded, loving that her friend was so blissfully unaware of what it meant to be a wife in this day an age. It's not like she married Charles Bingley out of love. He needed a son, and she needed a secure future. But, she would hold off on any children until she felt that she was adequately prepared. Who knew when that was going to be? Regardless, children she would have. Though, how Charles was going to get an heir being countries away from her for four months of the year was unknown to her.

When Jane was pointed out Emma simply tucked away the face for use later. Perhaps they would get along nicely, or perhaps not. It was all relevant to how intriguing she found the girl. Oh? The lake missed me? Are you sure it wasn't you, Mingan? She teased. The woman loved to poke fun at her friend, it was nearly her favorite past time.

Mingan kind of chuckled. "I do admit, I miss you. I miss the times we play around at the lake or run around until it was dark out. I always miss those...it was the only time I didn't have to hide inside." He then continued walking toward the lake, to see that it had never changed. It was nice to see one thing where it would never change. It did seem nice, as he stared long and hard before asking her. "How...long do you have before you gotta visit the other friends of yours?" He understood that he was not her only friend, and that she wants to meet everyone before she leaves again. "And I guess you rather not swim, I missed that. You were never afraid to get dirty." He chuckled again, kind of wishing he could....well...if he ever had the opportunity to find a colorblind woman, he'll like a woman who does not let society tell her who she is supposed to be.

Emma listened quietly, a small and slightly saddened smile on her lips. She missed those times too, when she was young and carefree. She could climb trees and roll in the grass and dive in the lake without any second thoughts. Those years had been golden. But now... now was different. She had been given lessons, an education. She was married to a high ranking man, she had well over 10,000 pounds a year, and she hardly had a want that was not satisfied. She had changed over the years, a fact that was sad, but one that Emma had accepted.

I have about two weeks, if you'll take me. My next destination after my visits to local friends is in Lancashire, I will give you the address in hopes that you will write? The woman was sad that her stay was to be short, but perhaps she could return on her way back home. Yes, unfortunately petticoats and muslin don't allow for easy swimming. Emma chuckled. She couldn't remember the last time she had gone swimming, besides a quick dip with her closest female friends once in a while. She took a long and deep breath, the smell of the water and the surrounding area bringing childhood memories flooding back. It is wonderful to be back here.

Mingan nodded. "Of course I can take you! I would never have my friend go without shelter!" He then decided they needed to walk back to the home. "I'll show you to the guest room then. And maybe help out with some luggage." They continued their walk, talking about the past as they slowly got back to the house. "I think Nando will be happy to see you again."

Speaking of Nando, he was riding one of the horses all around the stable, a few things come to mind: One, was the horse is being taught how to listen or the horse was getting sold. "Nando!" Nando immediately stopped the horse and had it trot toward the two. He then had a huge smiling face on. "Ay! Miss Emma! Fancy seeing you again! You seem to get more lovely as the years pass." Mingan rolled his eyes, as he knew Nando was a flatterer. Unlike Adwin, Nando was always one to compliment women just because he was always friendly like that. Adwin will just use them until satisfied...big difference. "How is Midnight faring?" "Very well, she is going to a good home tomorrow. I have to test her out to make sure everything was ok before she goes. You realize we had her since she was a pony...it's going to be hard to give her away." "She'll be fine, I seen the owners. They seem sincere. Midnight is lucky." He then wondered. "Hey Emma, have you lost your spirit for horse riding yet?"
