Hachi turned toward the peak. He'd want to head there if he was here only sightseeing...and he figured that would be what most souls would be doing.

And...yes, here was one, racing along. Its body was scant meters from it.
Hachi alone could keep it safe. He leapt and reach and flew for it - but it was a good runner, and had already evaded him for a while before that.

Quite often, he supposed: the mountains were not the kindest of terrain. He felt sorry for those souls. They'd never know what they were missing - what rich experiences they could've shared. Wasn't it strange, for something alive to be frightened of what came next?
Well. Perhaps it was because they didn't know, Hachi allowed.
There was that runner's soul again. Hachi tried to creep closer.

Slowly, slowly...he didn't want it noticing him and making a run for it. He really did want to bring it to a better place!

When he returned, it was to the edge of the island he'd been on previously: a sandy beach overlooking turquoise waters. He smiled cheerfully: this was the sort of location he associated with play, and his work-day was almost done.
In the water a human was struggling.

"You're safe," said Hachi, although he wasn't sure whether the human could hear, with his head under the water like that. Some spectators were beginning a quick dive for them.
They'd reach this little soul too late, though. It was safe in Hachi's arms, and would be borne home to the Vocivus, for its final rest.

Hachi was somewhere entirely new today, and it was a glorious expanse of life. He wasn't quite sure what San Diego Zoo meant but he could see a thick crowd of people that thinned as they walked further into the desert-like lands.

Fortunately there wasn't much foliage except in the exhibits themselves, and Hachi could simply fly above the crowds in search of a soul. Out in the fields where a lion roamed, someone old (who should've been wiser) felt his little heart stop. Quickly he flew down, and opened his arms. They could see him, which meant their soul came quickly and willingly.
Smiling softly at it, he returned to the Vocivus. Here was a new wealth of experiences.

The Vocivus seemed brighter with the new offering, although no brighter than ordinary. Hachi waved, briefly, at the everything the soul had dispersed itself into, and returned to his duty.

It was back to a zoo for Hachi - although a different one this time. It was more crowded, filled with cages instead of life. Sadder. Here, he'd definitely feel like a hero when he took a soul.
