Oh yeah, new way is un-fun. You just start in VG and get to watch Leon being chased around by 1.0 CL OMGs until you go and rescue him with GunsGunsGun emotion_omnomnom
Old way? You were on a subway and talked to Frankie, who looks suspiciously similar to that Labtech who talks to you in SeaLab. You got to choose you own attack ring (Mantis, Solar, or Hofoot) and your own heal (Diag, Band, or Meat) and had to do little sewer quests and couldn't go into the world of daylight above ground until you finished them all <:
