The teen tilted his head. Wow, she really was bothered by this laughter. He almost reached out a hand to try to give her a gentle pat on the shoulder, then decided against it. He wasn't sure how she'd react... but at least she seemed to be calming down which was good. He smiled.

"Its ok... its pretty frustrating.. being stuck here and someone laughing at us.... buut.. maybe thats how they want us to act? Ya know... rile us up for fun..." he sighed and shrugged. He really had no idea... He just hoped they both got back safe and sound.

At the mention of cold, he tugged the blanket around his shoulders with one hand and reached down to grab his pack with the other. "It was a bit better in my other set of fur." he laughed.

"Well if that's the case, then that's even more reason to just ignore them and not give them that reaction they want. Probably just a bark with no bite anyways," the bird's stubbornness was really starting to show at this point, as she refused to believe that there might actually be something out there strong enough or dangerous enough that she should fear it, or fear her life. It was the same as a possum, growling to try and fill them with fear, but if they showed none then it would simply roll over, play dead, and pretend as if nothing had happened.

As far as she was concerned, at this point, nothing substantial had happened.

Well, except for the two of them somehow being separated from a larger group of pae and ending up at the very top of a mountain only to try and walk back down, of course. That was pretty substantial.

Shrugging, she laughed at Wild Moon's comment, "It sure looks like it! Can't imagine so little fur would keep you very warm, but that's what the blanket is for, right?" As much as she felt she should tell him to just change back and be warmer, having someone to talk to was pretty nice. Took the edge off of things. Glancing around, she continued, "So, how high up you figure we are? Two, five, twenty kilometers? Maybe more?"

If they knew the distance to the bottom, or at least out of the snow, they could plan out their pace better. At least they had something to sleep in, though, when it started getting dark. It would be a very poor idea to try and continue on once the sun set.

How long had they been walking anyways? When would the sun be setting?

Wild Moon nodded and smiled. "Yeah, lets just ignore em. If they want to bug us that badly... then they can just show themselves!" he smiled. He hoped that wouldn't happen truthfully, he wasn't sure if two teens could handle something potentially dangerous on their own.... even if he shifted and her claws were darn scary...

Though... half of him wanted to go find out who or what was laughing at them too. Maybe they could help them get out of here they just... were... really... tickled?

He sighed and shook his head. "I honestly don't know how far up we are...I was hoping those tree's would offer us some kind of answer.. or at least some place to stay and get out of the cold." he said and shrugged, tugging the blanket to him. So little fur didn't keep him warm, she was right about one thing at least.

He wanted to say maybe they weren't as high up as it seemed, but the realization of that being true made him feel silly. "I think we should just keep going and see what we find. Maybe someone lives up here that could help us...... though I don't know who would be crazy to live up here..." he half laughed and sighed. At least he had her and wasn't stuck out here alone. It felt a lot better to be talking again...

The trees could give answers? That was silly; trees couldn't talk! Or, unless he was referring maybe to some of the animals that might be living in the tree? It wasn't a far stretch to think that he might be able to understand animals while he was shifted. As for the place to staying... yeah... it might be nice to have a real shelter.

"Hey, at least I brought the tent with us, right? When it gets dark, we can just share it. It'll be warmer that way too," the bird suggested, shifting the contents on her back as if to emphasize the fabric awkwardly sticking out of the end. While it wasn't amazing, it was at least something. Hopefully he didn't mind sleeping with her, not that it should really matter in this sort of situation. Sleep was sleep, warmth was warmth.

Not freezing to death was not freezing to death.

Nodding, she added to his comments, "Yeah, we gotta keep moving as long as we can. Especially because it's the snow. I've got a feeling that once we stop to rest, it'll be a whole lot harder to get back to moving," to this she shrugged off how she might know, since she didn't really know how she knew. Instinct, she supposed. "Well, there are fairies crazy enough to move us up here in the first place for no reason. I'd say finding someone living up here isn't much stranger."

After a moment to consider it, she laughed, "Though, that's not to say they aren't a bit weird for wanting to do it!" The trees passing to either side of them had, by this point, become a true forest with evergreens standing tall each and every way of them. Indicators of life could now be seen in the form of occasional trails of prints left in the snow, each varying in age, and trunks that looked as though they had been marked. If they weren't following the general incline downhill, it would have been very easy to get lost in the foliage.

He shrugged with a half laugh. "Maybe your right... those fairies were a bit crazy..." he said with a slight laugh as he pressed onwards. He began to notice the different tracks in the snow, some old, others new. These were the answers he was talking about. "At least we know there's more food here by the looks of it." she said as he inspected the tracts. He was so hoping one would resemble the shape of a foot of a pae than an animal...

He took a deep breath, summoning more energy. The cold seemed to sap him more in this state, but her previous comment was right. They had to keep moving, less they risk falling too cold to move. "How far can this snow stretch honestly..." he sighed, more in agitation. He expected no answer nor really wanted one. Thank goodness she had brought the tent...

But the thought of spending such close quarters with a girl that wasn't his sister sent a blush to his face. He hadn't been alone like this with another girl before....

He cast a side ways glance, really looking her over. Her feathers, claws. Of anyone, she seemed the one to be able to make it through all of this. He had to wonder how Night Wing was doing... that other teen he had met and never got her name, how Sweetie Belle was faring... Oh man how his mother would kill hiiiiim!!!

So.. ah... do you have anyone waiting for you.. when we get out of this?" he asked, trying to make light friendly conversation...

But of course she did, that was stupid thing to ask. Wild Moon you idiot

It seemed that, to Sparrow and Wild Moon, whatever had been laughing at them had left them alone. Perhaps it had been just the wind, as much as the thought of something openly mocking them hurt quite a bit.

And it did leave them alone... for a while.

After a while of Sparrow and Wild Moon's continued venturings, they would hear it again. At first, the sound was quiet, easy to mistake as the wind or perhaps just a sharp breeze. Perhaps someone was nearby? Looking around would reveal nothing, except an increased sound. It seemed louder, like it was surrounding them, now. It wouldn't stop. Something was mocking them.

Was the environment mocking them?

Was ...

-- What was that?

There was a silhouette in front of them with small, thin wings almost reminiscent of a dragon fly, a wide grin unmistakable on its face, that came closer and closer to them. When it was close enough, it stopped, peering close to observe their features, measuring them up and down like she was trying to determine what they were.

The silhouette tilted her head, now unmistakably female, as she observed them. She nodded, and nodded again, before letting out another loud, mocking laugh. Or was that ... cheerful?

"Interesting...," came out a purr, before a chuckle followed. "Perhaps worthy..."

And then she was gone.

Perhaps the spirit had been malicious... or maybe just a bit insane? It was hard to say either way, especially now in the silence that followed.

When she left and they calmed, they might discover that at their feet was now a large tome, text inside it indecipherable. There were several diagrams inside the tome, perhaps describing some kind of directions? Some of them showed hand motions, others showed symbols...

It would be hard to tell what any of it meant, though. Perhaps someone else might have a better idea of what the spirit had left behind ... or why, more importantly, it had decided to actively mock them before leaving this strange book.

Shrugging nonchalantly, the bird simply continued on. "Who knows..." she sighed as she looked around. At least, slowly but surely, they were noticing signs that they were heading in the right direction: down. The trees were starting to spread out more, with some of thicker trunks and larger leaves beginning to sparsely appear along with other shrubbery more common to a deciduous forest. It would take them much longer before the snow faded, and even longer before the forest transitioned completely away from the alpine vegetation.

As for his second question, she actually was not sure of the answer herself. Would she have a place for her when, or if, she went back to the cottage of her childhood? There were strange children, a strange man, strange tensions there, enough so that the bird mused sometimes with herself if it would be better for her to simply stay away. Surely her mother would not miss her so much, all things considered.

Yes, Twinkle was much too busy for that...

"Do you?" she instead asked in reply, her eyes glancing over to him curiously. He probably did, but this was an easy way to change the focus away from her.

After he spoke, she would be content to simply walk, her eyes looking for any signs of others. Unfortunately, there seemed to be none.

----------------------------------------------

The sun was beginning to set when the noise appeared again, the bird coming to a stop and looking around to find whom, or what, might be making it. It was frustratingly empty, their surroundings, and her hands clenched as she scowled. This again? Why, if she ever caught what it was... Oh... Would they get a piece of...

Blinking, her eyes caught sight of something... strange... foreign... A silhouette of a fey? Was this a ghost, a spirit?

A lump forming in her throat as she watched silently, her eyes glanced over to Wild Moon to gauge his reaction, her breathing carefully monitored and remaining steady despite the increasing rate of her heart. By all respects she should be frightened by now.

Should.

But this laugh, oh, the tone of it... How it made her blood boil! They were being opening mocked and made fun of by this stupid, silly thing. Her mouth opening to unload a piece of her mind, it instead hung like this for a moment as they were suddenly alone again. Closing it, Sparrow again looked to him, commenting dryly. "Well, that was stupid..."

Her lack of an answer had Wild Moon puzzled and he glanced over at her curiously when she replied with a question of her own. Did he? Well.. yeah of course he did. His parents were kind of... important...at least to their two separate branches. HIs mom technically had no rank in the tree besides maybe Advisers wife but she was still a Princess...

He nodded, was about to answer her and probably say something else stupid, like maybe if Rais was cool with he, she could chill with him when the strange laugh started up again.

He had thought they were alone and started trying to convince himself that whatever it was got bored and left them alone or was some weird.... bird maybe and it had left. But there it was, again, as if carried by the wind far off and distant. The more he strained to look, the louder it got. His ears twitched and his brows furrowed.

Then suddenly a shadowy silhouette like figure appeared in front of them, tiny wings fluttered and a wide unsettling grin on its face as it came closer and closer. He stopped, instinctively sort of stepping in front of Sparrow... asif he could keep her safe pffff. But the thing stopped as well, seemed to inspect them as much as they were inspecting it.

It muttered words and then fled. "What in the Moon..... Interesting... perhaps worthy??" he tilted his head and glanced at her, wondering if she had ANY sort of idea what it meant. "What would we possibly be worthy of?!" he sighed and scratched his head, taking a step forward but his hoof bumped into something and caused him to stumble back a bit.

Peering down at what appeared to be a strange book of some sort, he picked it up in his arms and idly sifted through pages. Weird words, symbols... hand motions..... were those directions? "Get a look at this...." he showed it to her before his OCD took over and he began twitchingly flipping through a vast majority of the pages, even sometimes miming out a few of the hand motions with one hand while he held the book cradled in his other arm.

Huffing angrily, Sparrow crossed her arms and scowled in the direction that the spirit had disappeared from. "Well, obviously we're worthy of anything we want, considering how awesome we are and all. Most others would probably have ended up panicking and freezing to death up here..." For a moment, she trailed off, her mind thinking back to her friend, Crystal, who had also been on the hike. Was she alright? Probably. With any luck, it was only the two teenagers that had been pranked like this. "...Though, I'd like it to mean that we're worthy enough to make it down, or something. This is getting pretty irritating." Getting? No, it had been for a while now.

"Eh....?" Taking a few steps closer to him and peering down at the book, she pursed her lips together before squinting her eyes and biting her lip. "..." Man, what was even on those pages? Her mom had taught her enough to read basic things, but this was something else. Something weird. "So... can you read it then...?" With how fast he was moving, she doubted that -anyone- could read something so quickly.

Reaching over to lightly hit him on the back, she motioned ahead. "We might as well keep moving. Who knows how long it'll take to get down." With a smirk she shrugged and continued on. If he was going to busy himself with that, he could get left behind.

Besides, anything left behind by a spirit couldn't be good.

He was hardly paying attention when she started speaking first, his mind was still focused on the book, trying to see if he could figure anything out or if maybe doing some of these weird motions would like.... grant magical insight. So far... it wasn't working. All he briefly heard was something about getting down...

"Huh..wha---!" he gasped, startled, when she lightly hit him on the back. He wasn't expecting it so he stumbled forward a few paces, flailing to keep clutch of the book and press it tight to his chest. "I.... well.. no." he frowned, his ears drooped even more so than usual as he followed after her. "I was hoping maybe some parts I could but it's all some weird writing I've never seen before." he said, running a bit to catch up to her, still hugging the book tight against him as if doing so would reveal everything. His mind was more curious than she was, or so he assumed, since she seemed to pay no real attention to the thing.

But she did have a point. "Hopefully not long... I'd like to get home and show this to my dad.... maybe He or Chief Rais would know..."[/b he mused aloud, though now mostly to himself, his eyes slightly glazing over in thought.

Laughing silently to herself, the bird couldn't help but feel relief at the fact that she wasn't alone in her illiteracy. She would have hated to seem like a fool.

Glancing back over her shoulder to him, she tilted her head. "Chief Rais? Is your father close with him or something?" It seemed a bit strange that a teenager would be able to speak so casually about showing something to the chief of all the faun. Though, perhaps, that's how things were in the tree. Her mother hadn't lived there long enough to really become accustomed to their ways and traditions, so most of what she had heard of it was fairly plain.

Her eyes returned ahead of them as she waited for his reply, seeking out any movement that might be ahead of them, possibly another snack, possibly a way home faster.

Wild Moon nodded, running his fingers over the book's cover and spine for a few moments till he grew bored of fussing with it, though his ears twitched every time he got the urge to just sit down and whip it back open. "Mmm, my dad is the Adviser... so I figure at least maybe I can give it to him and he can request to see Rais... or something." he mused and ran a hand through his hair.

She seemed to know who the Chief was well enough, but maybe not that well? Had she lived in the tree at one point? He couldn't really remember.... then again, his toddler days seemed hazy at best anyways. So much chaos in his family.... Between Twinkletoes, his sister and his mother... nothing was ever a dull moment. "Did you live in the tree at one point?"

"Ah..." So she was talking to the kid of someone very important in the tree, huh? What were the odds of that happening? Shaking her head, she paused before shrugging. "No... Well, not really... Maybe for a little bit I guess...?" This was a bit complicated to explain, and it wasn't as if she remembered any of it herself. All she knew were from stories. "My mom said she took me home to the tree after some Valentine's Ball, thinking I was just a pretty rock. Turns out I wasn't, so I hatched in the tree. Apparently the chieftain paid her a special visit, courtesy of the tree, and because of me she had to leave."

"At least she had Uncle 'Lantis to move in with by the beach. Can't say I know what she would have done without him at the time. Not that she needs him anymore, she likes to think." Her tone there are the end was becoming bitter, angrier, and she clenched her fists lightly, breathing in and out to calm herself before continuing. "So no, I never really lived in the tree. Pretty sure I wouldn't be welcome anyways, me not being a faun and all."

Not that she felt as if she would be particularly welcome anywhere she went at this point.

Well now he felt bad about asking... maybe she was one of those strange bird things he vaguely remembers in the tree. He was almost certain a faun or faunie or something had brought one.... "I.. am sorry, I didn't know." he said and blinked at her, sincerely. Now that he was older he could see why Rais would have asked that.... what with all the faun ways... but she seemed nice enough. Quick tempered he noticed, but she kept herself under control. He wanted to ask further, but didn't feel it was right to pry.

That was a shame... they found the book together. They were stuck out here together. Even if she showed no real curiosity in it, he felt at least she deserved the right to know what comes of this experience. "Well... then I guess if they can figure it out, I will come tell you." he smiled. He actually had no clue if that would make her feel any better.. it probably wouldn't.. but he was trying.

"I mean, if you want to know... I feel its only fair, we sorta found it together... " he paused, a smile tickling the corner of his lips. "After all.. we 'are worthy' so says that thing." The thought made him laugh and he had to double check himself to make sure he wasn't looking stupid or anything.... she did seem tense still after all....

"Oh... your a lot better than a rock by the way.." he added as an after thought before looking straight ahead and pondering.

"Ha, alright then. If it turns out to be worth something, let me know. I don't know where I'll be living when we get back, but I'm sure we'll find ourselves again if we need to," Guardian's will it. Wait. What was she thinking, that Guardian gibberish? Man, Crystal must have really gotten to her before they were split apart with all that crap for her to have even thought it. Stupid, pointless, useless. Smiling back at him, she shrugged, laughing. "Thanks, it's good to know that."

Looking up at the sky, she sighed and came to a stop, resting her hand on her hip. "Sun's setting... We better make camp for the night while we still have light." Looking to him, she gave a thumbs up. "Don't you think? Even if we're in the trees now, I bet it gets cold when it gets dark; always does."

She waited only a few moments before shifting her pack off her back and to the ground beside her claws, bending over to start retrieving the stuff to pitch a tent. Maybe he could find something else to eat in the meantime, or she could if he would rather create their makeshift campsite than hunt. Either way, they needed to get warm, and they could probably use some more food. Thinking about it, the bird realized that they hadn't really drank anything that day, well, unless you could count the blood from the carcass as that.

"So, what do you wanna do? Hunt or pitch the tent?"
