well japanese is one of the hardest languages to learn. Next to chinese and portugese. equal to korean.

Japanese is a terrible language to swear in though. you cant really say anything insulting. I mean you can, but nothing quite as insulting as you can say in english. Great language to be polite in, though. Unfortunately this means you have to have EXTREMELY good manners to get on in Japan or everyone will give you nasty looks.

But you can be VERY rude and offending when you have the proper tone and use the informal way of talking and words. I think you easily offend a japanese if you don't know their language that well even if you don't want to. They have a strict system. So hard to keep up with it... I am most content with my english, french, chinese and reading japanese (thank god that chinese and japanese are smiliar)... Tho' I might need to learn talk it since the japanese multimedia market is so big in the world. >_< For the sake of my future career. crying

wow thats a lot of languages.

Well you can be, but half the time its because one person speaks in kansai dialect (ie: me) and someone else doesnt. It sounds rude to them, but to me its perfectly normal. But if you think about it, japanese is impossible to be REALLY rude it. You can call someone stupid, but you can say that jokingly. In english theres a load of swear words that is usually intended to be offensive no matter what. I mean i swear a lot anyway but htats me. In japan you cant really do that.

Well, I'am not sure if this is right, but maybe it would help?

Words

Girl=
neesan
otome
ga-ru
onnanoko
mecchen

Love=
koigokoro
ai
aijou
ji
ren'ai
aikou
suki
koi

I'am not sure though if these are right, as I was using a translator.

I always though neesan was the ending you put on someone's name meaning older brother...? sweatdrop

It's very hard to pick out meanings for words in Japanese without having an actual Japanese person to prompt you. Why? The words can have multiple meanings when different kanji is used.

For instance, 'sake' can mean either salmon or an alcoholic drink.

'Keiko' can mean 'child of kei' or 'indigo'. Both of these are drastically different, as you can see.

I would reccomend that some one find a Japanese friend and ask them to translate. 3nodding

I would have to agree, if people use these translators, it will get very confusing...

nii-san: older brother
nee-san: older sister

also, when hyphenated, wouldn't shoujo-ai be girl love, where as, when not hyphenated, shoujo ai would be girl ai or girl love depending on how you(or the reader) chose to percieve it?

Tachi and Neko have less to do with who's on top and who's on the bottom like seme and uke. They're more describing the person's appearence.

So, a butch looking girl would be Tachi, while a femenin looking girl would be Neko. So it's completely possible to have a Tachi/Tachi relationship or a Neko/Neko relationship. In fact, most yuri that you see is Neko/Neko.

Oh...ok^^

I get it...

Um...so if you're cute and giggly, you're most likely a neko? Or am I just getting more confused?

Makes sense! I'm definatly neko/uke. I'm what some call a lipstick lesbian. Men try to pick me up all of the time when I'm with Carilyn...ugh. We're both very feminine.
