Recently I have been hearing a lot of people say that Sailor Moon is too sexual, that the purpose of the anime is to convince young girls and teens that being pretty is all that matters. Well here is what I have to say about that.....
First of all, the creators of SM never in anyway attempted to create an anime that teaches girls/teens to be sexual. The purpose of the anime is to teach girls/teens that true power lies in their hearts and in their friends. Sailor Moon is exact proof of that. She is a crybaby at first, scared and let's face it, a little bit of a wimp. However, as she finds her friends, she becomes more confident and strong. She even takes the lead at times, particularly whenever her friends are in peril.
Second, Sailor Moon and the Scouts are not vain (meaning they don't care about their looks, or what others think about their looks---Sailor Venus/Minako Aino being the only exception, as she wants to become an idol). They only care about protecting what they hold most dear to them (the world, the people they love, and each other). In fact, Sailor Mercury/Ami cares more about her studies than anything else, not including her friends or her duties as a Sailor Scout.
In my personal opinion, Sailor Moon is an inspiration to the younger generation, not influencing in the way these people are saying. She is demonstrating that if you believe in yourself, anything is possible. This show is about a girl that is relatable (to an extent) gaining powers to defend against villians. In real-life, things like this just isn't possible, they don't exist. So for a show like this to be created, it gives girls the use of imagnination, to dream and wonder what it would be like to be one of them. To be a strong heroine that will defend her friends at all costs. Not to be vain and just see the sexual aspect of wearing skimpy clothes (to be perfectly honest, that was mostly to get a male fan base, it wasn't really for the female population). These sailor suits were designed to be comfortable and flexible, so that the Scouts had the movement to fight and conquer their enemies. Also, the original japanese version of Sailor Moon taught young girls/teens something else very important; to be okay with your sexuality. In the japanese version, Sailor Uranus and Neptune are a couple, they are lesbian and they don't care what anybody else thinks, because they have each other. The amercian version changed it to them being cousins because they didn't want their kids to learn about these issues. Well eventually these same kids will grow up and learn about it anyways, so what is the point of trying to hide it?
Anyways, thanks for letting me rant about this. It has been on my mind for a while, and it needed to come out. I hope I am not offending anyone in any way. That is not my intention, and if I did, I apologize. But I will not apologize for defending what I think is the best anime I have ever watched. This anime taught me a lot, made me laugh, cry, applaud and scream. I will always be a fan, no matter how old I get. ^_^

Sailor Moon helped me to be more confident and to not run away from my problems but to face them.

Exactly! This anime teaches us that as long as we believe in ourselves and our friends, we can conquer any fears that we would normally run away from. That it is alright to be scared, to lean on someone else. To rely on and be relied on.
