Maybe the location isn't so important, as compared to this question: If we start in a place like Kanto, can all the Pokemon (including those in Unova and such) be seen/used?

As long as that isn't an issue, I don't think it matters. I know that I personally would be ticked if I had to rearrange my team just because my Pokemon weren't common in the region :c
