Joan of Arc. She was just a peasant girl, but with the power of her conviction, she lifted the siege of Rouen in just 9 days, despite the condescending attitudes French commanders had towards her. In a time in which women in general, but especially women who sought to assume any sort of masculine activity, were persecuted, her determination prevailed.

Another chick I found to be interesting was Catalina de Erauso. But uh, based on her pics, cross dressing and convincing people she was a man wasn't terribly difficult. Can't judge too harshly, cos she got laid on a regular basis by women.
Charlie Parkhurst was another favorite too.

Also, this is a great article about her. I'm intrigued by the notion that she might have had a child.

Complex Systems
Knowing a bunch of people who don't have the same opportunities I do, for no reason of their own, visiting Mexico for a class, and The Origin of Wealth by Eric Beinhocker.

I guess if I had to put a role model it'd be Hitler. Because if I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it BLITZKRIEG style.

Though, truthfully, I don't like having a role model. It makes me feel like there are shoes to fill, rather than walking my own path.

The way I look at is, if they could do X so could I (to a degree, at any rate). You can do as much or as little as you want, keeping in mind that the individual harbors a whole world of undiscovered potential. So you can still walk your own path, even within that paradigm. This kind of thinking is what keeps me personally motivated.

That and the fact that she managed to hide that she was "well endowed" without killing herself. I thought it was confirmed though, that she did give birth.

Ah, I see, you're right. Wonder where the kid ended up? I'd love to be able to say I was a descendent of Charley Parker. 3nodding

I'm still madly curious about all her secrets though. Especially in her dealings with women and men and what other motivation would people have to keep her gender secret.
ooh same~! But I'm from an immigrant family, so it's totes impossible. I'll just go with the "my family came from vampire and werewolf country, bitches!" xd

Struggling to think of some. I remember really liking Mia Hamm when I was much younger, even though she was a soccer player and I never played soccer. It was just really rare to see a female athlete in the spotlight so often, and she was so chill about it.

The Major is, of course, so awesome, but I was only recently introduced to her so while I can give her a nod, it would be a bit preemptive to say she has been a role model, though she's definitely worth emulating in the future. Because she's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool.

Solid Snake, because I want that infinite ammo bandanna.

ADA ALEX CABOT. I never want to be an district attorney but she's such a badass.

How in the hell have Disa and you only picked up on GITS recently? I knew about the series since middle school when Innocence first came out here.

I picked it up recently. I have no idea how long Disa has known about it, but I'm guessing much, much longer. It has little to do with "knowing" about any anime so much as I never had the desire to watch anything because eleven year old girls with huge tits tend not to be my thing, and that's all that was ever really on TV.

Raptor, you're a ********. I was watching GITS:SAC before it even got an English release. I have copies of it all, framed posters, I have a goddamn statuette, I have OSTs. I'm looooooooooooooove GITS, and your act doesn't impress me one bit.

Ray Kurzweil, then? He wants us all to be Motoko within 40 years, or at least for the technology to be there.

Hrm... I guess I'm a Kurt Vonnegut guy? Existentialism and gallows humor mixed with some basic desire that people be decent to each other? I like all that.

Diogenes the Dog, because everyone should have at least one crazy homeless guy they admire. Emperor Norton is also a good choice.

Plus, there's a ton of people who have managed to make a living doing things they love. Kudos to them.

I don't really have any role models. I guess LilPokPoki would be one. Another one would be Fareed Zakaria. From the top of my head LilPokPoki would be the first one I would say, with Fareed second.

These are people who inspire me:
LilPokPoki (Gaian user who inspired me to go to college for international relations. Someone who I have a crush on.)
Fareed Zakaria (Journalist who inspired me in becoming interested in international relations.)
FDR (President who had Irving Brant in his administration and inspires me for politics.)
Irving Brant (Relative who inspired me to become a journalist.)
Dr. Skoda (Teacher who inspired me to get into politics.)

Yes, I'd love to see some fresh findings on her story.

Haha, basically same here.

I love Plutarch's tale about Diogenes and Alexander the Great:

Thereupon many statesmen and philosophers came to Alexander with their congratulations, and he expected that Diogenes of Sinope also, who was tarrying in Corinth, would do likewise. But since that philosopher took not the slightest notice of Alexander, and continued to enjoy his leisure in the suburb Craneion, Alexander went in person to see him; and he found him lying in the sun. Diogenes raised himself up a little when he saw so many persons coming towards him, and fixed his eyes upon Alexander. And when that monarch addressed him with greetings, and asked if he wanted anything, "Yes," said Diogenes, "stand a little out of my sun." It is said that Alexander was so struck by this, and admired so much the haughtiness and grandeur of the man who had nothing but scorn for him, that he said to his followers, who were laughing and jesting about the philosopher as they went away, "But truly, if I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."

Also, Kurt Vonnegut, one of my favorite authors, has said some of the most insightful things about mankind that I've ever heard. For example:

"Human beings will be happier - not when they cure cancer or get to Mars or eliminate racial prejudice or flush Lake Erie but when they find ways to inhabit primitive communities again. That's my utopia."

I happened to watch this straight after getting baked. I was fine up until the point where I realized that I was watching Jackie Chan cosplay as Chun Li.

It's an international cult film success with tonnes of available merchandise. Her trove ain't obsessive. I have two GITS posters in our room, both films, a bag, the OST's of everything. For years I've wanted to get a tattoo set of the electronic glyphs Kusanagi has.

Though I hate Stand Along Complex, all except for that the music was done by Kanno. I'm sorry, but it falls too closely in line with Masamune's original aesthetic. It's also not noire either like Innocence or GITS.
Which lets it fall out of the sort of things I like from GITS, Akira, Bladerunner, etc.

I think what I don't like about Stand Alone Complex is that it's basically a really long detective story, with different villains perpetrating crimes. The OAV didn't have any of that; it was all cyborg action, nudity and existential philosophy. There were some particular episodes that are pretty good, but it just didn't strike me as being quite the same experience.
