He nodded and remained silent, moving his hand to her hair, gently running his finger through the gentle length of it. He sighed softly, then began singing a soft tune, a french lullabye. He didn't know why, but lately when someone was upset, he had the urge to sing these songs. He nestled her comfortingly against him and continued to comb her hair with his fingers, whisper/singing the lullabye.

"I can't answer that, Ellie." He said softly, gently kissing the top of her head. "You've never done wrong by me." He waited a few seconds, then continued singing the French lullabies, his eyes closed as he comforted her.

He stopped completely, the only thing moving was his chest as he continued to breathe. After a moment, he sighed softly and opened his eyes, looking at her. "To me, it sounds as if she had been waiting for this opportunity, Ellie. You have more say about your parents than she does about her children. After all, they're adults."

He smiled wistfully and sighed softly. "If your grandmother is going to be a horrible about it, don't mind her. She wants to exclude you from the family, then let her realize that she isn't family to you." He looked at her and moved his hand to her cheek, gently shifting her head to look up at him. "Your friends are your family, Ellie."

He froze for a moment, not knowing how to react, then slowly pulled back from her lips and looked at her. He couldn't think of anything to say, he couldn't find any way of explaining why he couldn't return the motion or sentiment, just that he couldn't. He closed his eyes and slowy shook his head. "I can hold you, Ellie, I can comfort you, but I am not quite sure if I can honestly do more than that."
