Forever sweet and never ending…
Jalen

Jalen wondered if he had said something wrong as Ivan just stared at him blankly, but then the other man broke out in a smile and started laughing. It was contagious and Jalen couldn't help but laugh too. Okay, so the Russian Mafia was a bit of a stretch. After all, he was too nice.

And hearing that no one was planning on killing him made the boy brighten a bit. He didn't just like it here, it liked being around Ivan. So it would have grieved him greatly if the man died. One of his rules was to never get attached to anyone fostering him. So many things could go wrong... They end up taking him back or Jalen ends up hurting them somehow... Even killing them. But it was hard not to with Ivan.

"Bookstore sounds wonderful," the boy said with a smile. "Let me just take a shower and go get dressed." He quickly ran upstairs, not wanting to make Ivan wait for him.

The Russian watched Jalen ran off, chuckling lightly to himself. Well, at least he knew how entertain the teen: get him books. Ivan moved to clean up the small mess he'd made cooking and took a look at a calender he kept on the side of the fridge. Hm, full moon in a few days. He'd have to go on a late night 'camping trip' and make sure Jalen would be alright by himself. Ugh ... his skin was already a bit itchy in places. It would feel good to get some tension out.

Sure, he wasn't bound to the moon like some legends said ... but he did feel a horrible need to run around on those nights. A need if not fulfilled made him very ... irritable for an entire month. Ivan knew this; he'd tried. Once everything was s**c and sat he sat in the couch, waiting for Jalen to finish.

Jalen

After washing up quickly and getting dressed, Jalen ran back out shaking wet hair out his face. "Ready!" he said, grinning a bit. He hardly ever got to go out and get books. Sure, a few families would let him, but most liked to wait awhile before spending much money on him. It was why he had mostly ill-fitting second-hand clothes and very few belongings. One rich woman got him an iPod, but he ended up leaving it at one families house because he was ushered out in a rush.

He had never spent more than a week in any given home. Factor that in and the fact he had been in foster homes since he was five, he had seen hundreds of different families and houses. He had been transferred to hundreds of different foster centers all over the US. It made it hard to take care of his possessions. After he lost his teddy bear when he six, the only memento he had of his old home, he vowed to never get attached to items either. But books made that hard.

Ivan smiled, getting up from the couch and heading out towards the car. Once Jalen was buckled in the passenger seat and the Russian himself was also settled in he turned on the engine. Pulling out and heading down the dirt road, Ivan thought of a question to ask as the slightly-bumpy ride smoothed out once they were on the main road again. "So, what kind of books do you like?" It seemed an okay enough question.

The bookstore he brought the teen was a pretty big one. One of those places that had shelves of books smelling of that 'new book' scent and a small space set off for a coffee shop with caffeinated drinks and cookies, etc.

Jalen

Jalen looked out the window as they pulled up, a spark of excitement in his eyes. "Mostly fantasy," he answered as they parked. He resisted the urge to jump out of the car and go running into the store without Ivan, but still couldn't wipe the smile off his face. "So what's my limit?" he asked. "How many books can I get?"

He always had to ask that, otherwise he would end up taking home the whole fantasy section of the store. He really didn't think Ivan wanted to pay that money. So he normally tried to limit himself to five, which he blew through fairly quickly. Three days, in fact, if each book was around three hundred pages.

Next time he would have to remember the library. He made a mental note to ask Ivan where it was later. Then when he ran out of books he could just go and get some more. Hopefully it was close enough for him to walk... He didn't want to constantly bother Ivan about it.

And then it dawned on Jalen that it was first time he was thinking of a foster home as a long-term place. He had never bothered with libraries because he never stayed in a home long enough to return the books. Yet here he was planning on going to one every few days.

"I'd say ..." Ivan pondered his budget. His job wasn't the most high-paying, but he was pretty good at saving up money. Mostly for meat meals were the most expensive thing the Russian ever bought. "... below seven? Yeah. And try not to get hardcovers," he said, though he was pretty sure Jalen knew better than to grab those, coming from foster care and God knew how many budget crunchers that gave speeches on saving money and all that. "I'll be sitting over there," Ivan said, pointing to one of the many strategically-placed couches around the place.

Leaving Jalen to 'hunting' out some novels, Ivan took a spot on a chair, grabbing a cook book. Ah ... how to better prepare meat ... He had to try very hard to keep from drooling at some of the meaty pictures.

Jalen

Seven? Sounded great! Jalen nodded and ran off, ready to go hunting for some books. The fantasy section was huge and the boy had no problem finding seven books that looked interesting. One about Dragons. Another Elven fairy tale like the one he had back at home. The same author even. He picked up a couple with fairies. A horror/fantasy with vampires. And two about mages.

And then he sat in the middle of an aisle, flipping through and starting to read the vampire one, disappointed to find it was all about stererotypical vampires. But he decided to get it anyway, since it looked good.

However...

Thirty minutes later there was an announcement over the store intercom. A very pissed-sounding manager snapping out, "Will the parent of Jalen Constantoich please come to the front of the store?"

"Konstantinovich..." came a small, barely heard whisper.

"Whatever!"

Ivan had been quite happy where he was, ogling delicious meat. A few people shot him glances the looked along the lines of 'You should be ashamed!' obviously thinking he was looking at some hidden porn mag or something. What? It was just food! Delicious, wonderful food. The Russian blinked at the intercom announcement, then winced. Why did he feel like he'd just been called to the principles office? Putting the magazine away, Ivan walked to the front of the store, looking curiously from Jalen to the obviously-irked manager. "Is there a problem, sir?" Ivan asked, plainly bewildered.

Jalen didn't seem like a kid that wanted to cause trouble. In fact he had appeared to Ivan to be more of the 'hide in a corner and quietly read til the world ended' type.

Jalen

Jalen sat behind the front desk, the perfect picture of misery, with his head ducked and shoulders slumped. His pile of seven books sat next to him. Oh, this was going to get him sent back to the foster home so fast it wouldn't be funny. Not that it was ever funny... God, he can't believe he did that.

The manger was glaring angrily. He jabbed a finger in Jalen's direction and snapped. "Get your delinquent boy out of my store and never bring him in here again! So help me, if I ever see his face in this store again, I'm pressing charges!"

Jalen sighed. "This is a huge mis-"

"Shut up!" the manger snarled. "I don't want to hear your excuses, just the ******** out of my store!"

The boy looked longingly at the pile of books next to him but got up silently, shoving his hands in his pockets. He was still the picture of misery.

Ivan absorbed the situation quite quickly, though it was still a mystery to him what Jalen could've done, and tried to salvage the situation a bit. "Sir, I'm sure this is just a mistake of some sort. But I can still pay for those books, so then we'll be on our way--" He didn't particularly like how the manager was snarling. Hell, Rocky could've gotten away with it--he was, what, over around six feet tall and wide enough to eat two of this manager--but this little person really shouldn't bare his teeth to people he didn't know. It was rude and annoying.

And life time ban from a book store? Wow. Ivan didn't even know that was possible.

"You can buy the books after you get your molesting son out of my shop!" the manager snapped, causing Jalen to flinch. Well then... That was very blunt way of putting it.

"I... I d-didn't..." Jalen stuttered, getting cut off as the manager shoved him towards Ivan.

"Out!"

Oh boy... This is was not going well at all. Jalen was highly regretting his lack of control in the in the aisle. One minute he was sitting and reading a book, the next minute he was getting beat up by some girl. The boy was surprised that Ivan didn't hear the woman screaming. Apparently the girl had gotten a papercut while flipping through a book and the found Jalen sucking on her finger. Yeah... Just a little embarrassing...

Ivan blinked. Now that was surprising, to say the least. He caught Jalen by the shoulders as the teen was shoved at him then gently steered his charge and himself towards the exit. Wow ...

Once they were both outside, Ivan gave a very large sigh. "... Molesting?" he said but ... it almost sounded like he was trying not to chuckle. What he wanted was to hear the story from Jalen's side ... are at least get an excuse of explication.

Jalen

Oh boy... Jalen followed silently, not answering the question. He got into the passenger side of the car and closed the door, leaning against it and staring outside. He needed to come up with an excuse quickly... Saying that he was just getting a taste for her blood was not an option.

Her blood wasn't even good anyway... The girl needed to go see a doctor and start taking iron pills. She was anemic. Her blood was thin and fairly tasteless. Despite that, she packed one hell of a hit with a hardcover book before the manager pulled her off and ushered him to the front.

He was almost tempted to just say he HAD touched her inappropriately.

"It was a huge misunderstanding," he muttered, staring out the window. "We were both looking at books and she had one that looked interesting... I went to tilt the cover up to look at it but she moved and I grabbed something I shouldn't have by mistake."

Did that sound like it could have been possible? Hopefully...

Ivan got into the car as well, but didn't start it up. He sat and silence and waited until he had his answer, then mulled it over for a few moments. With a sigh, the Russian got out of the car, and walked off. After a little while he returned, the books that had been in a pile a the front desk in hand along with his sales receipt. Getting back into the car, Ivan handed the slightly-heavy pile of novels, before buckling up and starting the car. "Well, other than you getting a lifetime ban from a bookstore, I'd say we've had a rather nice day so far. How about you?" the Russian said.

Jalen closed his eyes when he heard Ivan get out of the car. Yeah...He had really ******** up this time... But when he opened his eyes and saw the man with all the books he had wanted, he blinked. Taking them off the man's hands and setting the pile in his lap he turned to look out the window, feeling more than touched at the gesture.

Lifetime ban? Well... Had been planning on using the library anyway, hadn't he? That way Ivan wouldn't have to worry about buying things for him.

"Thank you..." he said, sincerity ringing in his tone. Was it sad he almost felt like crying? Over a pile of books? No, not the books. Over the fact that not only had Ivan trusted him, but instead of just driving off, he had went back in the store to get the books when it must have been mortifying for him to get called to the front of the store due to his 'molesting' son.
