lol I don't think all classic cars are ugly, but the fb i do.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:37 pm

Tadpole Jackson
you have no appreciation for a classic look.

but that's okay.

Just because he doesn't like one old car, doesn't mean that he has no appreciation. I agree with Tsuki, The front is not too bad, it's FC like, or rather the FC is like it. But, the rear of that FB is ugly as hell.

Tsukidra

To avoid flooding the engine without actually driving around and redlining, can I rev in neutral? i hear a kill switch solves that tho.

A kill switch shuts the car off, no battery power, no ignition, no nothing, DEAD. And NO, you cannot rev it in neutral. The engine must be loaded to actually do what Chronos is saying.

I don't think you can base a person's maturity on their age....

Sure the majority of kids who buy fast cars are going to wreck them, I loved those kids because they helped supply my local junk yards with wonderful parts I could use or sling for cash.

But, not everyone is like that. Hell, my first car was an integra GSR turbo. I didn't wreck it. my 2nd real car was an 03 s2k with a vortech supercharger, I also didn't wreck that and I was 18.

My 16 year old family friend bought a GTS corolla who's motor was tuned by TRD specialists at battle version (picked out by me for him) and he also didn't wreck it.

Another 18 year old friend of mine has a t2 FC3 and hasn't wrecked it (he is actually a superb drifter for his age, I should get some videos of him).

I can keep giving examples of people I know under the age of 20 who have fast cars and are responsible people when it comes to street driving. It is all about the person. I would say, if you are a responsible person and do not plan on doing stupid s**t on the street. Buy it. 7k is a good deal even if it is a heap. You can buy a TT motor for 2-3k or cheaper if you find the right person/place. and 9-10k for a FD is a decent price(especially if it is your dream car) even in cali where there are quite a few of them around.

But, be honest with yourself. Don't buy it to be an idiot and drag race on the street or drift into a telephone pole. If you plan to do stupid things. Don't waste your money. Buy something that is cheap to fix or replace.
I don't know about these guys, but I've personally been judging his maturity on his responses. IE He basically ignored the second half of your post and saw the first half as giving him more of an excuse to get the car regardless. That alone says to me him + FD = horrible idea.

No offense, Tsuki, I don't think you're ready for the responsibility that goes with that car. Go for the beginner-friendly 240SX and stop jumping up and down like a sugar-rushed 6 year old every time someone says you might be able to handle the RX-7.

I definitely have to agree with Ivan here. The thing about high performance cars is this: you are NOT going to be able to use the thing's full potential in the street. The faster the car is, the less of it one is going to be able to experience its capability. This is one of the things I noticed when driving my old car to and from the track(note that old white-and-carbon clocks circuit times 1+ seconds less than a Lamborghini Superleggra.) THIS is the part that is very frustrating,

The second thing is, performance driving has a LOT to do with mentality, and less to do with ability. Going into it uncocked or half-cocked is going to:

a) Cause you to needlessly waste hard-earned money that could be otherwise invested and used to generate even MORE money for a BETTER car when you are ready for the upgrade

b) Potentially cause a trip to the hospital or the morgue

c) Send someone else to the hospital or the morgue

d) Cause liabilities or libel suit that could ruin you, or your family.

I've been on a forum before, Evolutionoz, and one of the reasons I stopped going there was because a friend of mine was killed in an accident while speeding on the road. He was a VERY good driver(I couldn't ever scratch him at Karting, he was that good. As a person, I don't think there was a better natured or direct person in the world) He had a wife, he had a child.

His name was Tom(you can go there and search Evolutiontom, which was his screen name) He almost made it to the circuit before he passed on. I still miss him today. Last time I was looking for my old posts, I found his last message to me.

I nearly ******** cried.

So, Tsuki, it hits home pretty hard. Imagine how it will be for your family and friends if your want for a fast car and to somehow "prove" yourself in it goes wrong.

I suggest you just get the Civic for now, and learn with it. In the future, the RX7 will be even cheaper. Take it to the track, experience the limit, go for circuit training, and above all learn how to drive.

Because I do NOT want to have to attend another memorial BBQ.

That's the Jetta that used to be the legendary J mobile- The Black Rose. This is the car that I was an idiot in. This car cost me $8,000 USD when I purchased it in 04 IIRC. Practically brand new, it had sit in an auction yard until it was purchased by some Persian European imports lot owner who sold it to me. This is the car I learned to fix s**t on; to drive stick properly and daily on; and ultimately to drive on the track on. I went to college in Prescott Arizona. There is nothing to do in Prescott except- look at museums, get drunk/do drugs, go to Pheonix 100 miles south, go to Flagstaff 100 miles north... or drive desolate mountain roads. Being a teenager, bored and stupid, I chose the latter.

The Black Rose name stuck because people felt the car was going to be the death of me. I have destroyed this car and put it all back together so many times it's not even funny. With the amount of repair this vehicle has sustained it is no longer fit to be raced and it back to just being a daily driver. Now you may say- wow J you must be a gods awful driver to be wrecking all the damn time. Now I don't know about you... but I wasn't born a good performance driver, but a lot of us think we are and the we're good enough to drive the car the way we want to. It takes wrecking or almost wrecking to remind us we're not and correcting those mistakes to REALLY drive well.

You may ask what the point of all this is. Now I'm not telling you to go out and drive mountain roads all day. I'm telling you that driving fast or driving slow, you're gonna make mistakes in your car. Why not do it in something you can afford first and then have a performance TOY for when you can afford to destroy it. That's what I look at when I buy something. If I buy this, can I destroy and replace it/ how much will it burden my life if it is destroyed. If you are planning on using an RX7 just as a daily car you will not be pushing it in, then you are not ready for ANY rotary powered vehicle. Cars with these engines are meant to be driven hard and you will actually break their engine components faster if you drive them below the limit. If you drive them hard, yes maintenance is a bear but it's all parts that are expendables anyway. At best you will have a defunct RX7 husk after a few years of calm driving. At worst you will be killed because you drive the car like an old lady and when the time comes that you needed to unleash the power and handling properties of the car- deer/ drunk motorist/ SUV Mom/ whatever.. You won't have what it takes because you didn't know how the car handles at the limit and lost control.

Take it from the guy who daily drove an R32 for the longest time. It cost me practically another economy car a year just to keep this vehicle satisfied (not happy.. just satisfied) and not completely destroy itself. PLEASE drive on the track. Do it as much as you can afford to do it. You will learn so much. 90% of my track time has been in my Jetta and it is amazing how much driving that glorified grocery cart around taught me about vehicle dynamics and how much I can apply that to driving any other car.

Buying a performance car just for show is for old men with money. You don't need to drive an RX7 to impress people. I don't care what car you drive as long as you drive it well. Take note my fiance' fell deeply in love with me when I was walking 3.3 miles and back to school. My friends would joke with me that I couldn't even take her out on a proper date because I had no car of my own. 8 years later the same friends who told me that, still drive the Camry's they were handed by their parents and you all know what I drive. I didn't do it to impress people. I did it because it was the best feeling car I could afford for the type of driving I enjoy. Get a car that feels good for the type of driving you enjoy. If you just like driving the speed limit and cruising... My advice buy an old automatic American car as a prestige car... comparatively cheap, easy to fix (for anyone with basic mechanical knowledge), relaxing to drive, wonderful classic styling. But if you're not out to impress people, if you're not doing this to prove something, if letting an RX7 rot in normal driving is your style then go for it.

With that said. I've always been an advocate of choice. I know a lot of what I do is improper, wrong or irresponsible. Do what you want to do. If you do something you knowingly think is wrong, it doesn't make it any more right to be ready to take responsibility when something goes bad... but it certainly helps. Do something dumb and be ready to accept the consequences like an adult. Really all I can say.

Well after reading these huge bodies of posts, i had to relax a bit to actually listen to you guys. I have in my head to wait, but I'm pretty sure I'll get this eager to get one again.

Now I think I want an fc rx7

As a new driver looking to take part in motorsport eventually, you might want to think of the car you dream of, then go five steps back. In general, that's the car you can handle best and which will allow you to learn the most with the least chance of hurting yourself.

lol then you guys told me that the predecessors of the idea car is the thing I should practice in.

The 240 sx is the five steps back? >.>

Oh that was just those goons spouting nonsense.

Yes, the 240SX is definitely 5 steps back, seeing as its considered one of the most well-rounded beginner RWD cars to step into. Especially if you're thinking about trying to drift in the thing.
