- Standard earlobe piercing is okay, if I'm not mistaken

I think this one is okay because when a slave wanted to remain a slave, they could do so by piecing their ear in ancient Israel; at least, that's what I've heard.

тнιѕ ωσяℓ∂ ∂σєѕи'т мαттєя тσ мє...иσт αт αℓℓ...

I have never heard that, but maybe it's true.
I do not know why standard earlobe piercing is allowed when all other piercing is not, but I've seen pious Jewish women with earings in their pierced ears. Just so long as it's just one piercing in the earlobe and not one of those other piercings in the upper ear or lip or tongue or nose.

But I don't know why it is allowed, so maybe it is for the reason you said.
From what I have been able to gather from my Jewish friends here in Missouri, the reasoning is that the piercing of the ear by the slave/servant was not the same as the piercing of the ear for decoration. The Children of Israel, men and women, wore jewelry. That jewelry included ear jewelry. A servant who stayed with his master past the term set for him by the Law had his ear mawled or disfigured. It was not the same type of piercing as that for a set of earrings.

I didn't know that, but then again, I'm not Jewish. I just know the Christians aren't supposed to make significant, unnecessary changes because our body is supposed to be His temple. The laws for gentile Christians were less strict anyway (I'm not saying that quite right xp Go read Acts if you don't know what I mean), so like the dietary laws, we don't really have to follow it.

тнιѕ ωσяℓ∂ ∂σєѕи'т мαттєя тσ мє...иσт αт αℓℓ...
The Law can be summed up in two points.
1) Love God with all your being
2) Love your fellow humans

Its not so much that Christians do not follow the Law... if you are doing the two points above, then you are observing the heart of the Law.

^_^ You're right.

I did not know there was Hinduism and Buddhism in India. I guess that is a good explanation. And I never really thought about strict and liberal Islam. I guess liberal Islam seems like an oxymoron to me.

The whole covering of the body is not strictly necessary in Islam, the way I understand it (from talking with a friend), is it's more of a modesty thing. In certain places the complete cover up is a remnant of tribal customs. For instance, a friend of mine who's been Muslim all her life only starting wearing a head-scarf in public after she was married, as a sign of respect to her husband. In the same way western women should wear head scarves when in the middle east, as a sign of respect for their culture.

As for the whole body-mod issue. I love my tattoos, all 5 of them, even if they're all places where they can be hidden in a work setting. They all have meaning for me, I respect tattoos with meaning, not so much the ones that are all the chinese symbol for 'love' and 'pure' and really say 'stupid person' and 'pure (oil)'
Incidently Aakosir...which Chaos symbol from Warhammer was it? I'm all curious, because my hubby has an Eldar symbol tattooed on his back (he, however, was a die-hard Eldar...until he found Chaos anyway xd ).

I would also like a cat tail...it would make all my feline dreams come true biggrin

I'm not sure which Chaos it is. I'll have to ask him.

I can see how wearing the scarf is a sign of respect. American women seem to lack respect when they are married. I used to wear short skirts and low shirts, but I haven't in a really long time. And I most likely will not because I'm married now. I can't stand seeing women over 30 dressing like they're 16 because they are divorced and single. Grow up woman...

Well back in the day, tattoos and body mods had more to do with pledging to other Gods or other nations. Since the Hebrew religions really didn't like mixing with dual cultures/allegiances or being assimilated into it's neighbor's culture, of course they are going to have laws that prevent this from happening.

I really like piercings and tattoos but I think I would never get one. First it's a no go for me even when it looks cool. Second, needles scare the crap out of me. redface
My fright is so embarrassing, I even fainted once after blood taking. Then I only saw dancing hippos and stars. xD
Body mods aren't really attractive to me. I think we should stay as we are and not copy animals, so to say be proud of being as you are. =D

I think it's stupid, honestly.

How does a dangling piece of steel or some drawing on your skin make you look any better O_o

I mean, it's one thing if you want to be a tiger or something.

But why put little pieces of metal underneath your skin? In both tattoos and piercings.

But, if someone wants something, they should go get it. Not sure why you would want it, but I suppose that's up to the person with the piercing.

Now, working out, plastic surgery, I get that. I propose working out. Becuase it can not only make you 'look better', but also make you feel better, be better, and simply be more healthy. There's also a lot of benefits to being strong and fit and whatnot.

Of course, I'm a hardcore workout person though. So my feelings for working out extend a lot deeper than just that. xp

I, personally, love body mods. I think a lot of them are beautiful, and I wish we had the technology available to us to change ourselves like they do in Scott Westerfield's Uglies series. I plan on getting a few tattoos, one, 3 angel feathers on my back; two on my shoulder blades, and one on the small of my back. These are symbolic to me because I've always felt that somebody has a guardian, and to me, these feathers symbolize a closer relationship with said guardian. The other one I plan to get is a Yin-Yang tattoo, I'm studying Taoism (hoping to become a practicing Taoist!), so that would be symbolic in my religion for me. There's nothing else really that I can think of that I'd want....other than a pair of actual wings....but that's out of the question...
FOR NOW.

I couldn't care less if someone wanted a body mod, I just don't particularly want one myself.

To a lot of people, piercing and tattoos make them feel really good. I can remember the way I felt with every piercing and tattoos. I was so frickin' giddy and happy. And when I think about the ones I want, I get the same way.

Tattoos and piercings are not unhealthy. Granted there are inks that are unhealthy, but you'd be a moron to get UV ink under your skin... So that is that own person's risk. But piercing heal. If they infect, you take them out and they're fine. They don't do anything to damage health unless, the person is an idiot, and lets it get so infected that it turns into something bad. But that is that person's fault. They should take care of it properly. I mean, it's common sense.

I got my ears pierced with gold and they infected so bad that I had to dig the earing out of my ear. I took care of them, let them heal, then tried again with another metal. It's common sense! But people are seriously lacking there...

I love hearing the meaning of someone's tattoos. Or ideas in your case. It makes me feel good that there are people out there who actually think about what they want and why the want that. And those are very symbolic.

No one ever commented really on Buddhists or Taoists so I suppose I'll take a go at it.

Like many other religions, depends on sects and their rules. Generally speaking I don't see it as a no-no to either religion, but I don't see them as advocating it either. Tattoo and body mod arguably are cosmetic in nature, as such, it would be seen as grasping at an abstract concept of 'beauty' or 'image' and as another way of grasping to the self.

So not forbidden, but probably a sign that you're not terribly close to enlightenment either. All arguable of course and up to varying points of view.

Thank you ^^
I don't like to make permanent things that have no meaning, I want to be able to look at it and remember why I got it/made it, and what I was feeling, my reasoning...Just me though ^^;

i've been told since i was a kid that the body is a gift from god, and you don't defile that gift by getting tattoos or piercings (only acceptable piercing is one set in the ears for girls).
people will do what they want. as long as there's safety involved (using clean equipment), it's ok by me. i'm just a little squeamish about doing it myself (i have family members who have tattoos and piercings, and they go though a large effort to cover up/take them out, and i don't think the tattoos have any meaning, just 'i felt like it'), and although i've said this, my religious grandma thinks i'm really doing it for my love of god. whatever makes her happy
