We have a server with an account that we pay for as well as an external drive.
I have a G-Drive mini with like 600G firewire 400/firewire/800/USB
lol who uses USB for animation? (nobody)
Honestly, my hard drive is like one of my prized possessions. I store school stuff and animu on it so it's nice.

We have personal account for CAD labs, which are different from our regular school accounts. Files do not sync across accounts. Additionally, there are three network locations we have to save to/access, and we need to work on our laptops at home - but we can't access those network locations off campus and even on campus we need an ethernet cable to access them. Things also have to be uploaded to SLATE for submission.
