Well the way I see it, it's for the convenience of both the player, and the person running the thread. It can be found in the RP, for the ease of everyone in there. You can also go to a single place to find all the characters in use around the guild, this allows easier referencing than going from thread to thread hunting for one single character.
This also allows everyone to keep a hard copy so that no one can alter things. Maybe a player is unhappy with the way things in the RP are going so they change a few minor notes in their character profile to make things swing better for them. On the other hand, maybe a thread creator is unhappy in the same way, so they alter some stuff. This way none of that can happen. It removes the temptation to do it because if you did, the crew would just come in and put it back. I hope that sufficiently answers your question.
