Of course, her husband's suggestion was completely infalliable and I was just a complete moron. That must be it... rolleyes Social work must deal with a lot of idiots like that too, so I admire anyway who has the patience to deal with it. It must be gratifying once you get around all of the setbacks though (yay...I actually made a point in the post to make it relevant sweatdrop ).

Any crap you get at a job is relevant. ^__^ When I worked at that cafeteria people would ask me the ingredients of food. How the hell am I supposed to know that?

But yes, we do work with people like that sometimes. You have to focus on little steps and strengths. My professors say that simply getting to the appointment can be a huge deal. Gotta take baby steps with some people.

95% of the time I tell someone I'm an Animal Science major they say, "Oh, you're going to be a vet?" and when I say no, they say, "......... Well, what are you going to do, then?"

Veterinarians aren't the only people who work with animals. gonk

I worked with a bunch of social workers for a year at a non-profit. I actually thought I was going to major in social work my freshman year too! I admire people who can do that, but I realized I don't have enough patience and I guess I'm a little greedy too, cause I couldn't work for that little pay. I was burned out after a year...I couldn't imagine a lifetime of that. Some of the social workers HATED their jobs. It's kind of like teachers...if they get burnt out they should quit.

When I tell people I'm a journalism major, most of them think I want to be a reporter or something. Journalism also includes advertising, marketing, and public relations (my concentration). A lot of people don't realize that, and think I want to be on the news or in the paper or something.

Well jeez, the disadvantages of being a teacher sounds discouraging because I was considering it as a fallback career, a science teacher or something like that. I suppose I could handle the stresses better since I can defuse testy situations in short order and can put people in their place in a few sentences. I dispense the notion of being nice if the other party isn't going to act nice.

But for my major, geology, I often get the misconception that I'm going into the oil business because I'll be drilling into the Earth and all (this is for petrochemical engineers or petroleum geologists), or I get to go to erupting volcanos (that would be cool, but that's specifically for the volcanologists which are a special kind of geologist). The worst myth about geology is that I get to collect a bunch of shiny gemstones and other pretty things. My mother asked me to bring some gems to her after field trips. I do study and collect rocks and all, but I certainly am not THAT fortunate to come across gemstone bearing rocks. Most of the samples I collect are relatively boring and are fascinating only to those with a decent knowledge of geology.

Interior Design

Most commonly mistaken for: Interior Decorator scream
Most common asked: Can you help me pick out some curtains and pillows?
Most common unknown facts: It's a 4 year BS Degree. The first 2 years of my degree are the exact same as the architecture degree. You have to be liscensed by the state to practice.

Definitions:
(as described by our professor)

Landscape Architect - Designs the site and general position of the building. w/ the Architect.
Architect - Designs the building and the general layout of interior spaces w/ the Interior Designer.
Interior Designer - Designs the function of the interior spaces and general asthetics w/ the Interior Decorator. (This job is often done by the Architect to save money)
Interior Decorator - Puts the finishing touches on the asthetics of interior spaces. (This job is often done by the Interior Designer to save money)

Unfortunately, the only contact a lot of people have had with social workers has been bad experiences. Case in point, me - although I'm intelligent enough (I hope) not to believe that just because I've had some bad times that this is all social work is.

I had a social worker come into my home. She was new to me, and I to her. She looked at my file, which read, "Cerebral Palsy, Social Anxiety Disorder, Bi-polar, some learning disabilities." She then looked up at me, smiled sweetly and said in a voice you'd use for a toddler. "Do you know how to brush your teeth? Come here. Show me how you brush your teeth." And she grabbed me by the arm and tried to guide me to the bathroom! I kid you not! I broke her hold gently but firmly, reversed it, and guided her to the door! In that same tone I said, "I have a better idea. Why don't you leave, and I show you how I call your supervisor."

This was not the first time I was treated like a complete retard, by social workers and others in "the system", because I'm poor and disabled. We've also, for bullcrap reasons, been forced to sign custody of our eight-year-old son over tho my husband's sister.

It's horribly unfortunate that, among those who are below a certain income level and need financial assistance, this is all they know personally of social workers. We need them but have come to dread them.

My husband is currently going to college to be an interior designer/decorator. He does both by preference. He's in a dite of an awkward spot because most of the other students in the class are girls. (I'm studying to be his assistant - currently by working alongside him, but later I'll be taking a few classes on my own.)

I get frustrated when i say i'm going into psychology and people's eyes light up and they say "Oh! Can you psychoanalyze me? Can you tell me why i do this? Will you be able to get my kids to listen to me?" *sigh* i'm a freshman. I'm in intro to psych. So at the moment, no and not all psychologists 'psychoanalyze'. It irritates me already when people say it though. And it happens with everyone i know.

i'm also a psych major, but i'm not going into the traditional psychology. i want to do industrial organizational psychology which deals with business psychology. it's sorta like human resources. yet i always either get blank looks or get asked for discounts when friends and family members go crazy.

Yeah I sympathize with both of you. I get the same jokes about discounted therapy and drugs from my family. The weirdest thing though, I came to a friend with a problem, but it abruptly turned into her saying "forget about it, let me tell you (in great detail) that your advice about my troubled relationship really worked". Where do psychologists go for advice? lol.

I'm a psych major and I hope to get my PhD in Clinical health Psychology. People I usually talk about this too are others in the field, like both of my parents. They can't wait until I can become a colleage and can go to workshops with them and learn therapy applications.

The only ones who look down on me or make fun of my major (ironically) are friends and people I used to work with in the Government.

One friend decided that dropping college all togethor and moving to Alaska was far better than being a Psych major, and told me how her job at a resort would be better than listening to people complain all day...o.O

At work they used to say, "Thank god! You'll improve our productivity and say what's wrong with all of us"

People can never seem to understand why I'm majoring in German.

"Uhm.. what the heck are you majoring in German?"

"For one, it's my family's language and I wasn't raised bilingual, so I'm learning it now. Two, I just really like the language and while it's just kind of studying the language now, once I go to grad school a whole bunch of different doors will open for me."

"Uhm.. but, why German?"

rolleyes

I was thinking about studying social work or international studies in grad school. :3 I was actually thinking about being a coordinator at adoption centers over in Germany. x3 What a nice coincidence. :'D
