Irene took a deep breath and nodded. It had been almost an hour and half since he left home. Would his mother go to his room and check up on him? Most likely not. Would the other maids? Most likely yes. And would the maids tell his mother about his disappearance? Most likely yes...save for a few who knew about his pains.
"I shouldn't disturb your quiet night further. Do forgive me on the intrusion." Irene sighed, deciding that it was safest to return as soon as possible.

Crystal sighed very quietly, a sad smile on her lips. It seemed no matter how much they tried to spend time together, it simply wasn't meant to be. "I insist you return on a day where you will not flee my home after a mere sip of my drinks." She tried to turn her smile into something slightly more playful, but it didn't quite work under her sorrowful expression. This was the second time he'd have to leave, just when she thought they'd have a moment to sit and talk like human beings.
She did not bother with formalities for the moment. In her home, he was a man with a difficult life style rather than a noble with titles and stiff interactions. She declined to remind him that it was he who had demanded the meeting in the first place, giving a faint chuckle as she held out her free hand for the cup in his. "Thank you for speaking with me." Despite the lack of formality, there was still a lack of familiarity, a grey area that made things somewhat more difficult than necessary.
Such was their fate, she supposed.

The young noble bit his lips. He could see the sadness in Crystal's expression, and he was sure he looked the same. What was sad for him, Irene realized, was not that he didn't know how to comfort her, but rather he was not allowed by circumstance. He cursed whatever that had pushed him in a situation like this and cursed himself for not able to get himself out of it without breaking someone's heart. He never thought he could be so sentimental, especially in front of a woman.
Irene sighed and forced to smile back at Crystal. He put down the cup beside him, and took Crystal's hand with his still warm fingers. He'd kissed her hand, but instead he just held it, and gave a gentle squeeze.
"I will. " He murmured, "it was my pleasure, and I could ask for nothing more."

"Ask anything. You know how to find me." Crystal's smile softened, some of the sadness easing from her brow as he took her hand. A gentleman first, he was, and a noble only afterwards. She carefully put her cup next to his, clasping his hand with both of hers to return the squeeze, before doing one better; she released him and slid her arms around his sides, closing the space between them in a sweet hug.
She didn't give him much time to react, withdrawing almost as quickly as she embraced him, her smile still hovering over her lips. "May the rest of your evening be peaceful," Crystal said quietly. She knew what waited for him at home, but she couldn't possibly imagine what he had gone through to enforce their meeting tonight. As far as she knew, he simply did as he pleased.

Irene nodded, then smiled softly. He made no comment on the embrace, despite how much he was unwilling to be let go. The young noble sighed, "I will be at peace for you." The words trailed off at the end, and the young man gave Crystal a gentle kiss on the forehead before letting her go completely and turning to head outside. Irene stopped at the doorway and looked back one more time. The smile that remained on his face looked more forced than before, as if he was trying to hide a stronger emotion that was really affecting him.
"I..I will come back. Farewell for now, but...if you wish to see me."
The words ended no more question than a comment. Before the girl could react, the young noble literally ran off, and disappeared at the end of the corner without ever turning back.
Because he knew, if he had turned back, he wouldn't be able to leave. And perhaps someday, he never will.
Someday...
