Taariq's ears folded back at the sound of his sister's voice. He looked back to her and then to Hanataro. After snarling at the poor hebisune nastily, he hesitantly obeyed his sister's orders. He still kept his eyes on Hanataro. "What are you doing with this weak, outsider, Emiko?" He asked. A low growl escaped him.

Emiko put the books down and sighed. "He isn't an outsider, Taariq. He is my friend, and I think I'm old enough to decide who I hang out with. Ugh, you're just like Dad with this protecting obsession." She walked over to Hanataro, blocking Taariq's view of the hebisune while doing so. "Hanataro..." Her ears folded back. "I'm so sorry. I had no idea Taariq was around. He didn't hurt you did he...?"

Hanataro's ears also flattened, but he managed to force a smile at his friend. "It's alright... He didn't hurt me." Almost as if he was trying to reassure her, he straightened up, curling his tail around towards one of his front legs. However, something was bothering him... He had heard something crunch when Taariq made his attack, but if it wasn't his bones, then...
"Oh no!"
Suddenly, he jumped and slipped his medical bag off, placing it on the ground. After he wrestled with the zipper for a moment, he began to pull the split stalks out, leaving only the single shoot that had remained intact inside. "Oh well," he sighed as he pushed the damaged, leaking plants aside. The smile reappeared on his face as he looked to Emiko, still trying to ignore the fact that Taariq was still back there, behind her.

Emiko frowned deeply as she saw the damaged plants. Her head turned so she could look over at her brother with an annoyed, narrowed eyed, gaze. Her tail flicked the ground as she sent him a message just by her expression on her face. Taariq owed Hanataro an apology. "The important thing is that you're not hurt," She said as she turned her attention back to the hebisune.

Taariq huffed and rolled his eyes. A low growl escaped him. "Heh! Fine! Get mad a brother trying to look out for his sister. Geez, you girls over react to everything. No wonder why dad is always making a fuss..." His ears folded back. He was a bit annoyed with his father's need to keep them all together too. Some of the full grown litter wanted to fly off and explore the world a little more... Taariq wanted to fly off and challenge some stronger kimera himself. Of course, the girls must of been making his father too nervous to allow such a thing. It was their fault, not his!

"Oh. Well, thank you..." Hanataro gave a nervous chuckle and lowered his head, hoping not to get caught in the middle of Emiko and her brother's possible argument. It seemed that every time he tried to speak up for someone, he got bonked, tackled or bitten... In fact, he tended to get attacked no matter what he did. Upon realizing this yet again, he sighed and glanced back up at his gray-pelted friend. He wasn't just causing trouble for her, was he?
Hanataro resisted the urge to apologise in favor of silence, as awkward as it felt to him.

Emiko frowned at Taariq for a few moments and sighed. "You have no reason to be concerned about me... I'm a grown woman. I'm not going to fall off a building and forget how to fly when you're not looking. Go home, Taariq. I'll be back in a couple hours... and I don't want to deal with this right now. I want to spend more time with Hanataro." She smiled to Hanataro. "I brought the books by the way."

"Whatever... you're doing the reading thing again, huh? You and the books..." Taariq said and shook his head. His sister was really weird in his opinion. He walked over to see what books she was talking about anyway.

"Oh!" Hanataro perked up, a curious twitch in his ears. He crawled over a bit closer and looked at the books, unable to make out a single thing that was even on the covers. "What are they about?" he asked, eager to begin reading. He just hoped that he wouldn't embarass himself anymore than he normally did, especially with Taariq watching as well as Emiko.

"Well the small one is about a human child and a firetruck or something. Its a kids book, but those are easier to start with. I also brought something you might be interested in." She nudged over the bigger one. "This is a medical book. It has all sorts of medicine and stuff recorded in it. The humans new a lot once..." She smiled. "You probably know like half the stuff already at least. "

Taariq sat over by the wall of the alley. He mumbled to himself and curled up to take a nap. He didn't like leaving his sister here.

Hanataro gave a nervous, shy smile. "Well, I don't think I know that much... But I'm probably not ready for that anyway." He looked at the large tome for a moment, wondering what sort of techniques the humans could have used in their healing. As fascinating as that was to him, he placed a paw on the children's book with the firetruck. She said it was easy to start with, and that was exactly what he ndeeded.
"Um... What do we do now?" Even the cover looked like nonsense to him, but he decided to try not to display his doubts openly, and to wait for Emiko's instruction.

With her nose, Emiko gently flipped the page of the book. She put her paw by the words. "See these strange scribbly things? Humans call them words. Each word has a bunch of letters in them that have their own sound. If we learn the sounds it becomes a bit easier." She looked over the first sentance. "See this word with only one letter? It's an "A". All by itself is sounds like "A" so it's pretty easy, but it makes different sounds sometimes too... like "Aaah." It can get pretty tricky, but will take it slow."

Hanataro nodded and mouthed the ways of saying "A," pointing at the letter with his paw as he did so. He waved the tip of his tail a little, a small hint of confidence coming over him. This didn't seem so bad... At least, not yet. His paw tapped the letter gently for a moment before he looked over at Emiko.
"So... That's 'A?' .... Um, when does it make the other sounds?" He looked down at the page, staring at the "A" curiously.

"Well... mostly when it's in a word with other letters. It doesn't make the sound "A" a lot. It's mostly 'aaaah'." She looked over the page and pointed to another word with her paw. "Like this one. The word 'all'. It makes an 'aaah' there." She smiled," It's a bit tricky to get the hang of at first, but you'll get it. A is also one of the vowels in words. All words need at least one vowel or they don't work."

Hanataro hummed a little bit as he tried to think. His tail curled a little as he stared down at the word 'all,' but then he turned his attention back to his arnulf friend. "So, every word needs a 'vowel?' There are other ones besides 'a,' aren't there?" He searched the page for another vowel, but he honestly couldn't tell what was what in the way of letters. One of his gray-furred ears drooped as a result as he turned his gaze back to Emiko.

Emiko nodded. "Mm hm. Theres a little song for it to. Now how does it go..." She bit her tongue gently as she thought. "Anyway...." She said after a couple of moment. "They are A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y." Her paw "pointed" to an "o" on the paper. "Theres an O.. and over here is an e..." She pointed to the the E. "Sometimes a word has more than one vowel." She stopped talking so her friend could ask questions. There was a lot more to teach than she remembered. It would be worth it though, to have a friend she could read with and understand her hobbies. She stretched her wings out for a moment before folding them back in. Her eyes glanced over to her brother for a moment, who was now napping soundly, curled up in a corner Emiko sighed. Her brother had no interest in her hobbies, that was for sure...

Hanataro leaned forward a bit, nodding as he looked down to the page. There were so many things that he wanted to ask now, such as why Y was only "sometimes" a vowel. But that didn't seem quite as important as the more recent comment that Emiko had made. "More than one in a single word? When does that happen?" His eyes followed hers, and he gave a quick glance to Taariq before looking back down to the book. It would take a while to learn how to read, but he knew it would be worth it.

Emiko tilted her head and tried to think of how to explain that. It was a harder question for her to answer. "Well I think it happens mostly in bigger words. Ones you say with different syllables. More than one syllable. Like... like... ketchup! Ketchup has two syllables because you use two different sounds. Hat has only one because you just say 'hat', you see?" Her ears folded back. She was beginning to wonder if she would be able to teach her friend everything the right way. "It's really confusing, sorry. If you're not getting this tell me. This is something one doesn't get good at till they have a really good feel of it." She sighed and shook her head. "Sometimes I wonder how I managed it. I'm sort of stubborn though."
