Illuminatus's ice-blue eyes met hers, his gaze like an electric conduit. "The future..." He said quietly, "Is whatever we have the courage to make it. Whatever we fight for. Whether you follow this family horror or live to become a legendary healer is entirely your choice. You just have to learn how to make that choice."

"You're right, but it leaves little to be enthused about when you know any day your patients could be you," she replied.

He put a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry, Luminita. That must be really difficult for you. I don't know what else to say." He said, irritated with himself that he was unable to comfort her.

"You don't need to say anything," she said softly, "I already know the truth, I'm probably as good as dead."

"I'm not going to just sit here and let you die, Luminita. Together we can stand against the darkness that is to come." He stopped himself abruptly, silently berating himself for his slip.

"How chivalrous, but I don't need nor do I want chivalry, We need a way out of this. Especially with Saraz, what are you going to do?" asked Luminita.

He pulled a thick scroll of papyrus out of his breast pocket and waved it in front of Luminita. "It's time I told you the truth. Esrath is not just a rare species of snake. He's a Salagazh from Egypt, an ancient guardian of the Pharaohs. The Salagazh know spells that humans can scarcely imagine, and I met Esrath on a trip to Egypt. The spells in the great pyramid were unraveling, the runes changing seemingly at random. And these are the runes that describe the very object that they form. He was so worried that he came with me to seek answers at hogwarts. This is difficult to explain, but in a nutshell, there is a spell that shows the world in the form of runes, glowing symbols inside a dim outline of what they describe. They describe every attribute of anything! Saraz now has the Amulet of Ra, the pendant that allows one to change the runes. I mean, you take an apple, and change one rune, and it's suddenly made of stone. Change another, and it's made of pure light. This is serious power he's wielding. Only a few other items have this power, and they're entombed with the dead pharaohs, with tons of traps protecting them!" He was breathing hard, and said to Luminita, "We're the only ones who can stop this. My Rune Pulse spell has told me all of this. Oh- the spell sends out a pulse of blank information runes, and replicates the ones at the center of an event. Unfortunately, I'm not very good, so I have to sort out all the trivial information that the pulse picks up by accident." He checked the scroll again and laughed. "Did you know that Madam Rosemerta's daughter stole a bottle of muggle Tequila and put it in the butterbeer keg to show her boyfriend she could be every bit as bad as him?" He grew serious once more. "What do you say we take a little holiday? Somewhere with lots of sand and sun? Esrath, we might need a Shadow Tunnel." He slapped Esrath's scaly side as he reentered the room.

"Ra, the sun god of Egypt Ra? I read up on Egypt as a child, I guess I could be of use. Lets go," she said, grasping Illuminatus' hand.

A smile spread across his face even with the direness of the situation. For once he felt needed. "Esrath, give us a Gateway arc 7 field 13 tangent 8B Sái erêd sarath. Esrath recited a spell and used his tail tip to etch a series of runes in a circle around the trio. The room began to ripple, dissolved into runes, and swirled around them as the slid through a hole in the dimensions. Blue and green light flickered over their bodies as the tunnel of swirling light and shadow began reassembling the world, first as multicolored runes, then sand, then sky, and finally, a blast of sun so intense Illuminatus felt like he'd been in an oven. "Agh!!! Aguamenti!" He doused himself with water and took off his cloak, haphazardly tying it around his waist. He helped Luminita up onto Esrath's broad back and they slithered off. "Es, are we going to the Valley of Kings?" Esrath nodded. "I was afraid of that. Wands out." He pulled out his abnormally long wand and they continued into the blistering mirage of heat waves.

Luminita cast a cooling spell to keep the Egyptian sun out of their faces. Her wand was ready for anything.

"Good one, Luminita." Said Illuminatus. "It's just over there, Esrath." They slithered into a slight depression in the ground. Illuminatus read some runes that had suddenly appeared in the sand. "By the powers of Twilight and Shadow, let the Way be opened." He said in Ancient Egyptian, while Esrath said the same in Salacazharo. Their voices formed an odd cadence, and the sand shuddered, and melted into a smooth, glassy slide into a deep rift in the ground. They could just barely make out the bottom, some hundred feet below. Arches, walkways and doorways honeycombed the wide canyon, and eerie green light flickered in places that should have been wreathed in shadow. "One at a time," Said Esrath, and deftly began a scale-raising descent on the slide, banking and diving through the crisscross walkways, his serpentine body granting him perfect control. Illuminatus made as if to follow him, and froze. He hated heights. "Screw that," he said, unconsciously grabbing Luminita's hand. "I can't do this alone." His face, normally a healthy albeit shadowed complexion, was white as chalk. He was shaking ever so slightly as he looked into the abyss.

"Maldígalooooooooooooooo!" Illuminatus's Spanish expletive trailed behind him as he slid down the slide, holding on tightly to Luminita. The wind rushed past him, carrying a peculiar musty and dead smell. He shuddered. He knew what that smell was. He suppressed a retch. Finally the hair-raising slide came to an end, and Illuminatus, still traveling at high speed, collided with something very large and very solid. He slumped to the ground, struggling to stay conscious. The jackal-headed Anubis statue regarded Luminita and Illuminatus coldly, rocky spear making a grating sound as it stood in a less statue like position.

Luminita's eyes widened as she saw the statue...she'd seen it so many times in books and to be here, in front of it, was breath taking.

Illuminatus's breath came fast. "Luminita, is that statue supposed to be alive?" The Anubis statue barred the way, but did not attack.
