I remember it happening a few times. And yes, originally when DMC1 was a stand alone game and they weren't sure if they would make others that was meant to be a death scene. They left it ambigious enough however, to bring him back should they continue the series.

Before making him Nelo Angelo Vergil was a guy in an American Civil War outfit with a Sabre. Not wanting to waste that they transformed it into Vergil that we know and love in DMC3. They like Vergil enough to bring him back and they've said at least once that they like the character and feel he has lot's of potential. Long story short, it was once a death scene but was ambigious enough to become a "possible death but could actually just be him running off in a more spectacular way/ridding himself of Mundus' influence" scene.

EDIT: Oh lookie at that new trailer, what a surprise who just happens to manifest as the Devil Bringer's spirit...

Thank youuuu heart No I didn't. (referring to myself as Vergil as I'm roleplaying him in Gaia, don't mind I dont really think I'm him lol).

I obviously... ghahhh... lost the fight against Mundus Satanas... argh... and transformed into his Majesty's knight, Nelo Angelo.

back to topic:
Well I thought Vergil to be in DMC4 as another NeloAngelo version being Neros blue spirit seen in some preview pics, as there are many hints towards it, like a BLUE skull, like ... YAMATO.

If he isn't, maybe even better. I hated the producers for making him into an instrument of a new character or killing him fully. That 'death scene' in DMC1 could clearly be interpreted as 'warped away into security' as he did like 2 times before in the game and once in a previewsly playing novel.

Plus I have like 60 Fan Fictions that could turn useless if Vergil was eliminated in such a definit way. xp
