Mark couldn't believe what he was hearing: the group was actually thinking of splitting. As he sat in the motel room gathering up some things before they hit the road, he thought about what might happen next. Traveling back toward the east to Valdosta would waste several days worth of travel time that they had spent going west towards Charwood. In some sense, Mark could understand the decision of the ones that wanted to continue on towards what was left of civilization. Personal safety, after all, was still an important human concern. Something inside Mark made him wonder if he was doing the right thing in heading back with Sean and the others who wanted to go. Safety was only a few days further. Heading back meant certain resistance and possible death. So why then was he getting ready to head back into the beast's maw so-to-speak?

Mark had almost forgotten about the labtop that he had brought with him. There was no more power anywhere it seemed, so the battery was all but dead. It was for the best, he thought, since it was just extra weight. As the last flashing bar of the computer began to disappear, Mark reviewed the pictures that he had downloaded on to it. He saw scences of a happier time. A time that seemed so far away, yet was only a few weeks ago. The pictures helped him to realize that there are some reasons to head into the unknown. There are times to play it safe, and some times to take a chance.

This was a time to take a chance: a big one. The next week or so was going to determine alot about the future for the group, and for Mark. The computer darkened and Mark laid it down on the bed. Gathering the last bit of supplies that he wanted to keep with him, Mark headed to the parking lot where several others were talking.

David looked at his friends and tried to superimpose their happier versions mentally. Pablo was getting a bit detrimental about things, and Mark.. well, he's never that simple to figure out, although my friends find ways to crack jokes on him. Sean was being Sean, although he had been going through some changes. David can usually tell these things about people -like a room, you can always tell that it's been rearranged, but soon after it's hard to figure out where what was.

David was doing what he learned to do years back. Account for things -if it bears any weight, if it's good or bad, account for it. So far He figured he was doing a pretty good job by not getting too emotionally involved, but that led to the feeling of grossly miscalculating the weight of words and the thoughts they represented on the groups current situation. Something was heaving beneath the earth in terms of emotions. David focused his attention on Pablo but not his gaze. He realized something he didn't account for. He had to reconfigure his mental plan. The seeds might not be worth destroying after all.

Downstairs in the parking lot, a couple of the people were gathering to talk about what they were going to do. Ben and his dad were gathering up some stuff, and it looked like they might actually leave for Charwood. A couple others had a few of their things, as if not sure as to what they should do. Arguments included "We wouldn't stand a chance" from Pablo, and "We don't need to take the risk" from Ben's dad. Mark decided not to say a word to anyone; if he was going to go with Sean, then we wasn't going to try and convince anyone else to risk their safety. These people were Mark's friends, after all, and they shouldn't have to risk their lives if they didn't feel it was worth it.

Truth was, Mark felt bad that this little mission wasn't the reason Mark wanted to go. Sure, getting the girls back and to Charwood would be great, but the real objective was far more important to Mark. Putting away the map that he had kept secret from everyone else, Mark knew that the time to split was near. Within an hour, everyone would choose their path and be stuck with it. In a sense, Mark had an easier time at the moment: he had made up his mind almost a month ago. Soon there would be no turning back... for anyone.

2012

Looking back is strange. Trying to picture your life accurately in retrospect after so much has happened to change you, to shape you, to break you. They say hindsight is 20/20, now I don't belive this is true. Because your looking back through a fog, a tremendous, sulphiric fog. I'd like to say: "Oh yes, I knew why I did that, or yup I'd do it again if I could" but if I stop for one nasty second and be honest with myself, I don't know what I would have done...

They said the world was going to end in 2012, they were three years off. The world of man ended in 2009. I haven't really had time to sit down and write everything that happened that year until now. I feel like I'm dreaming, now finally safe within the walls of a great subteranean city, the underground captial of America. i wonder if Wells knew, if when he wrote the The Time Machine there was some foresight bringing the image of subteranean cities in a post apocalyptic earth to his mind.

But the fight is not over. We've been granted a reprieve and now I'll take some time, a precious few hours to make record of all we've seen and done, just in case, years from now, if survivors find my writings they will know what we sacrificed and how hard we worked to see the Mandragora defeated, to see the Legion pushed back.

Perhaps the next time a inkling of this grisly process comes to light among the "civilized" scientific community, they'll look back on our notes, our desperately scrawled journals, or hastily recorded sound files, perhaps they'll look back and say: "Well, maybe we should stop, we wouldn't want thatto happen again would we?

Somehow even now I wonder, to be honest, I doubt it, from here in my small closet sized cell, air conditioning, in door plumbing, and electricity surrounding me like the miracles that I always took for granted before this crisis that they are, I doubt it.

I think that when society goes around another couple of hundred years they'll find themselves in the same predicament and unless something is done by those who know better, they'll crack open Pandora's magical cakehole and start the whole prcoess over again. Why? Why do I think that?

Because now I know, that hindsight is never 20/20...
