Its unfortunate, but the decision to focus heavily on the visual bands alone is probably out of a decision that is again driven by a goal to increase sales. The overall problem is that they are and the music community particularly within the US is a business, treated as a business and its up to the fans, artists and musicians to do the real promoting.

The visual bands are easier to promote in the US specifically because of the visual component to them, its somthing they can physically show off to the general public as somthing that seperates them from the mainstream bands here in the US. The remaining Japanese bands are most likely going to be have to be promoted through the underground j-rock movement which ideally will slowly chip away at the barriers put up (not intentionally but its there) against j rock in the US.
Well, yes. It's very obviously all about business. (Which, actually, I don't blame them for. Part of me says, if they make money off this, good for them.)

The visual bands are easier to promote to a certain audience. Those not interested in costumes/gothy styles/(often)androgyny/subcultures won't pay any attention.

Anyway, despite all that, there's enough non-vk promotion going on as well. Take, for instance, Japanese bands based out of NYC. The Spunks and Peelander-Z have a decent fanbase, enough to tour the country. They tour with bands from Japan, too. In the end, bands like Polysics end up having a pretty big (well, comparatively) following in the US, and Japanese band events (Japunks, etc.) draw pretty good crowds.

I'm just sorry that "Jrock" holds a negative connotation to certain people who are turned off by vk.

Yeah NY seems to really have a whole music community all its own making it a good place to build up a fanbase, sadly I no longer live near NY.

And yes its really unfortunate that j-rock as a whole is mass labled and otften times ignored because of the strong association with vk. And I do agree that vk can only be really promoted to certain audiences, but I think only to an extent. I think it really depends on how the bands are promoted and introduced to the market. I think that what vk does have to offer in terms of a marketing perspective is (and this is my opinion and there are some that may strongly disagree) a sound different from that of music in the US, and yes....ill say it, the visual component. This brings up another problem which is the mass labeling of j rock as only visual. Im not really sure how to combat that problem, but I do think it needs to be remedied. Another problem from a marketing aspect is, and i think its a stupid reason to have a problem but a very real one, is that many, if not most people, in the US arent going to give the music the time of day if its not in English. Im willing to be a majority of those in this forum get the question of "You cant understand the lyrics why are you listening? why bother? and the ever popular "its stupid because I cant understand it"

Ahaha, I used to say that lyrics didn't matter at all, until I could understand them. Now they suddenly do. 8D.

Hmm, it's people like that whom I like to avoid. If they're gonna be closed-minded ********, they can go screw themselves. Those with an international mindset will go explore as far as they want. Things like translations are always available on the Internet.

You know what, this entire "jrock" vs. "vk" kind of bothers me. Lately I've been stepping back from all these labels and subcategories, and simply calling Japanese rock... Japanese rock.

This, I think, is part of the problem - "Jrock" never meant much other than "visual kei" outside of Japan, and often you can't say you like "Japanese rock" without a response like "Oh yeah, Jrock! Yeah, I like Gazette and Malice Mizer 8D"

To tell the truth, lately I've been pretty damn apathetic towards this vk/"jrock" overseas fandom. I'm much more interested in seeing how it's done firsthand - how the Japanese fans treat these bands, what this "scene" is like. This "jrock" following that arose in the US/Europe/wherever seems a bit too artificial for me x: Too many people have the control to take it in whichever direction they wish to.

From all the J-rock fans I have seen thier fandom mainly started with anime or videogames which progressed into liking Japanese Rock. Bands that are touring here is one of the reasons that there popularity graws noticably, but I think the main reason is that people are really starting to like them(besides the fact that they sound wonderful) is that their love anime couches to like the Japanese culture and which draws them to Japanese music.

At least you cats don't live in Foreignia aka Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico does not make Utah look good, no matter how far away from everything it is.
Yeah, I don't know what type of zealots Puerto Rico has, but it can't be any worse than the Mormons and Bible Beaters. crying crying
Religious extremists are always such entertaining company. =
Especially when they're Jehova's witnesses who come to your door...What's with the whole watch tower thing anyway? xd

My grandma was a Jehova's Witness....she told my family we're going to hell. : D

Can I just say I love you, MadTiger?

Your comments are possibly some of the more intelligent observations made about the fandom and Japanese rock in general...and just as I was beginning to think the overseas fandom was beyond hope...

I think bands Like Orange Range(yeah know the whole anime soundtrack thing) at a con would be good, but should do american tours otherwise.
Personally i'd liek to se bigger real venue tours from Japanesse bands. It's starting and i'm glad it's happening. I just wish i wasn't basicly only happening in cali...

This conversation was over like, so two years ago, but I feel like throwing in my two cents again (new username, new ideas xp)

Anyway, I don't really like the fact of Japanese bands going to the US. It just makes me want to throw up thinking about how many more obnoxious fans I'm going to have to deal with. Sure, it's a great opportunity for real fans to go see their favorite bands, and it's good for the Japanese bands who go to America.

A few weeks ago I was reading a friends magazine and it had an article of the Taste of Chaos tour and they had a blurb on MUCC. "Sounds like HIM" was pretty much all it said about them. I got pissed off, since when does MUCC sound like HIM? Some research would be nice if you're writing an article on a band.

Anyway, I've had a few "Oh, you like Dir en grey? I went to their concert, they're SOOO sexy liek omg so kyute and sext i just wanted---" Sure, I don't really like Dir en grey that much anymore because I don't like their new music, but it would piss me off as an artist to know that some chicks (maybe dudes) came to my concert just to fawn over my looks. I laugh when someone says they love Gackt so much sometimes "Really? Would you still love him if he looked like s**t? Would you still like him if he looked like a hybrid of Micheal Jackson, a dirty old crack whore, and Yama chan?"

MADTIGER!!! I'm glad your still here! Oh wait...Does this count as fangirlism? Oh shi- ._.

I know it does...It just sucks. Especially because I play shows and stuff, I'll be hella pissed if I ever find out someone came to a show of mine because of the way I looked, not for any musical ability : /. (That's why I liked Beat Crusaders when I finally saw 'them' after listening to their music xD...I love the faces.)

The HIM thing pissed me off at first but, I guess it's more funny now, thinking about how stupid the writer must be. I can't think of a single song of MUCC's that sounds like HIM. Hmm, maybe it's just me, baha.
