He closed his eyes, and smiled a manic smile. "What did you expect? I told you to detonate, and instead you seemed to get rid of the mentats. But I couldn't trust that, now could I? I have to be sure of everything, to see to it that the job's completely done."

Riyoku shook her head, "And how do you think I'd feel if you got yourself killed on this mission? Do you think that I don't care? I may be like THEM but I'm still a Natural Born! I HAVE FEELINGS." Her voice had changed from the days when she was but a quite and softspoken sniper. She no longer felt like she belonged to the clones, but to someone else. For the rest of the way back to base, she didn't speak a single word.

Riyoku inspected Styx's damage. "It's not too bad. I'm just going to bandage your back. There's a few 2 degree burns on it. That jacket probably saved your spine..." Her tone was as cold as before, still questioning him.

"Why do I, seem to matter so much to you? You don't know who I am, what I am, where I've been." His question was pitched in a tone provocative and infuriating, for among all else, Styx was a master when it came to getting information. He could work emotions, trip thoughts up, incite fury or despair, even happiness when the need arose. He could confuse thoughts and clarify them, and he could remain perfectly cold throughout. Now, though, he only wanted an answer to this one question, and he couldn't bring himself to interrogate her any other way. To do that would be fatal; to do that would require him to aknowledge himself to this other. For now, in his present state of mind, this was the only way he could ask while hiding his personality in his own mind.

"Why does it matter to you whether I care or not?" She asked rhetorically, "You don't know me either." She worked carefully, her cold hands comforting to the wounds, numbing the pain with her own life force by using her gate. "So why do you care to know? This is just as legitimate as your question and I won't answer until you answer my question truthfully."

"It doesn't seem as though we'll get along very well, does it? You want to know why? Because it was what I was trained to do! I can't very well trust my own thoughts and emotions or my senses, because I didn't even know it they were my own! They could've all been created by the mentats for me to experience. I had no way of knowing without giving myself up entirely. So what does one do in that sort of situation, eh? When you don't know if you're a puppet or human? What would you have done if our roles had switched? I detonated because it was the only thing that could clear things up for me. Excuse me for thinking to die with a clear mind."
It came out in a sudden outburst, like a dam rupturing with the pressure of too much water. He stepped away from her. The pain returned almost instantly, but he refused to give in to it. He fought down the urge to say more; he had said enough as is, and probably too much. Trust no one, be trusted by no one. It was a survival tactic that had always worked, and it was one he always relied on.

The corner of her mouth twitched, seemingly from anger. Her hands dropped and folded in her lap. She didn't return rage, but gave him one of her rare smiles, she so seldomly smiled that way at a person, it was probably as rare as flawless, natural 124 karat diamonds. Tank was the only one who had the fortune and privelige to see it done before Styx.
"I apologize. It was my mistake." Her eyes were almost... sad. She had never expressed her emotions before the raids in Germany and now, she knew why she could. She had truely learned.
Riyoku walked past him slowly. As she was directly next to him, she looked up and gave him her answer. "And I care about you, because you made me realize that I am human, natural born and can never be Perfect... that I have feelings."
She walked away and out of the room.

Had he made a mistake this time? Had his tactics failed for once? Was he really what he made himself out to be, blood-hardened and friendless? Had he lost a friend or gained a friend? It is too early to tell right now.
Styx Galbren. The Silencer. Trust no one, be trusted by none. Friendship leads to betrayal. Aquaintances become foes. Thus it had always been in his short life. What reason is there to change now?
Riyoku. X-15. The Blackbird. That's the reason, but...
Where is the reasoning?

In her room, she checked the statuses of the global bases. Her mind strayed towards her conversation she had just then with Styx. He was who he was, let him decide. She used to be just like him until the NBR took her into their ranks and taught her human ways. She used to be a soloist, a freelancer, a cynical person. Used too...
She saw that more sites were recovering by some miracle of who knows what. Riyoku checked the status of the Brazilian sector. No doubt Tank would be there now. She opened a comlink message to send.
"This is X-15 Blackbird, mission complete. The current stats are..."

((I HAVE RETURNED!)) Ryoko walked outside a building. He was gasping a little. He had used his gate a little too much and over exerted himself. He knew that he had to find someplace to rest so he could be safe. He continued to walk around. He came to a building. He had enough energy to jump up onto the roof. Now he could rest and so he did. He slept being cautious of his surroundings. He knew people would come to look for him.

((I'm alive as well...))
Riyoku got an alert on Shadow's health status. It appeared to have divebombed... a good guess would be that his gate got too powerful for him and he had to force shutdown on it. Another guess was simply that he used it too often. Her hand went to the dial right above her ear-and-mic set, tuning it to the appropriate frequency in order to communicate with the proper person.
"Come in, shadow?" She spoke into the mic once connection was established. "Base picked up an energy exertion report from you."

Ryoko woke with a start and pressed his earpiece close to his ear. "X, is that you? Long time no talk." he said as he smiled a little, but then clutched his side. He had a cramp in his ribs and it hurt to just sit up straight. "You guys still got me on your computer huh?" he asked as he laid back down.
