The lights bobbed in a group for a while then one by one went out. Leaving the night in silence.

Carmena fell asleep slowly as the lights bobbed out, still laying on the windowsill.

The light of the rising sun woke Carmena just in time for her to hear a light knock on the door.

Carmena woke slowly as the sun hit her, and she spoke loudly to the person on the other side of the door. "Come on in." She said, still sitting on the window sill.

There was a pause, then the door opened and Drael stepped through, "Did you sleep well?" He asked.

Carmena turned, looking at him. "Sort of. I was woken up in the middle of the night by a strange screaming coming from the garden...with those bobbing lights in the center. I...I was wondering - what are they?" She asked, hoping he would tell her.

Drael frowned slightly but as always it vanished quickly, "There are things about our race that have remained from the times when we truly broke from the Seelie Court. The reasons we left those countless years ago are still reasons why we differ as courts today. If you ask me to tell you, I will, but it is not something you will enjoy hearing."

Carmena thought for a moment, glancing down at the garden before looking at Drael again. "I don't care; I need to know." She said solidly, her tiny body determined.

Drael nodded, stepping up to the window and looking out across the garden's, avoiding Carmena's eye as he spoke. "Every third night mortals are brought here, three of them. They are taken into the center of the gardens and sacrificed in a bloodletting ritual. The blood is drained into the earth to feed the plants while the flesh is devoured by the daemons who do the sacrifice, the bones are collected and used in the forging of our weapons, enchanted and crushed and forged with the metal to let it strength." He spoke of these atrocities in his normal calm tone, utterly emotionless and neutral, no pity or sadness for the acts, simply an explanation of what had happened, as if it had been a normal experience for anyone, and for him it had been.

Carmena took a deep breath as he told her, absorbing the information. She thought it through carefully, trying to decide what she thought of it silently. "Is it...is it necessary?" She asked quietly, her eyes looking up at him. If it was necessary, it was apparent that she'd be willing to let it go. Mortals would die shortly anyway, wouldn't they?

"The blood itself is necessary, the way it is done, the eating of the flesh, and the collection of the bones is not. The mortals experience much unnecessary pain, and because of the way their bones are handled, their souls are not allowed rest." Drael said, speaking calmly, honestly, he would not lie to her.

[-You saw nothing.-] Carmena took a deep breath, nodding quietly. "I don't suppose there is anything that could be done to change it?" She asked quietly.

"It is the way of Daemons. We are called such for a reason. The Daemon race has committed countless atrocities simply for their own entertainment. Ritual has simply become an excuse for much of what they do." Drael explained calmly, "I try not to involve myself with such things. Yet I have been around them all of my life. They have become normal to me."

Carmena took a deep breath, nodding. "I...I guess I understand." After a moment, she distracted herself. Her eyes looked at softly. "Let's...do something."

Drael nodded, taking a step onto the windowsill, "Very well, I have one last place to show you." He said, looking back to Carmena, "If you would like to come."
