Oh yeah, she'd been a little beaten around the brush, hadn't she?
In fact, she hadn't even thought about it until he'd mentioned it, pausing and setting her fork down to carefully prod around her abdomen, wincing once, though not badly, before offering him a weak smile.
"I guess he didn't get me as bad as I got him.." she replied, before looking back to her food, a sort of sickened look on her face before she forced another bite of food.
No need to starve herself over ill sentiments, right?
It felt right to her, afterall. Well, not starving herself felt right. Or else she'd wake up irritable in the middle of the night and end up eating the flesh of infants nothing until breakfast.
.. .... .. ....
Hmmm, odd silence again.
"You really scared me last night." she finally admitted after another bite of her dinner (What improvement, eating even when in semi-emotional turmoil). "And.... I'm sorry if in turn I scared you."

Yes, starving herself wouldn't have been a very good idea at all-- and not just in the usual 'denying one's body of fuel is stupid' way, either. If she'd tried anything (like she had with oh, say, breakfast earlier) Yossarian would've just forced it on her anyway because, dammit, that kind of self-destructive behavior wasn't gonna fly anymore.
Not while he was around, anyway.
But she hadn't tried so he didn't worry about it, just mumbling a half-hearted "good then" before taking another bite. Geez, he seemed pretty ravenous... not that he wasn't justified in it though, seeing as he'd had grand total of two muffins and four bites of crepe for the entire day... and was also trying to recover from a big messy heap of mauling injuries.
... But on that note, now they were back to the injury (well, 'worried' talk) again. Oh, sigh. He'd been hoping to put that misery behind him already.
"I..." s**t, what was he supposed to say to this? He wasn't about to fess up to just how badly she'd 'scared' him last night, what with the whole, y'know, being (pseudo) DEAD and all.
"It's... fine," he settled on mumbling, albeit without actually looking at her. "The past is of no consequence any longer, so such dwelling is irrelevant."

Of course he wouldn't fess up to having his superpowers fueled by thinking the love of his life was dead. That might have gotten him lynched with apologetic affections.
Really.
But again, awkward love was really awkward (Shoot, in the last day they'd probably beaten Kanda's 'Life Unfail' episode in terms of lip contact. Guess Yoss wouldn't be able to harass his rival about that anymore)... but the 'No need to dwell on it' (Oh, no complaints about 'WTF you say?') seemed to do it's job. .. ... .
Kinda.
She took a couple bites of her food, then half-glanced up to watch him. Oh god, had the happy estrogen level just gone up a little? Ah ha ha. Probably just some 'Oh he's eating, Wheee!' happiness going on there.
"Does it taste okay to you? I went with making something.... non-spiced because I didn't want to kill the household with my taste in spicing."
Ah ha ha. The overabundance of spicing, she meant?

O SHI-- he'd actually been able to feel that jump in estrogen too... as a cold shiver up his spine, earning the briefest of pauses before he forced himself back to eating. Sure, it wasn't a bad thing for Aster to be happy, but the way she just seemed to have switched from weepy and miserable to OVERWHELMING HAPPY in the span of one kiss was--
.........
Oh no he hadn't just thought back on that or the 'L' word again. While he didn't exactly regret it, choking down that memory without getting (secretly) flustered again was hard. Really, really hard.
"It's... entirely adequate, yes." And now she was back to asking about the food, which put him in the (AWKWARD AWKWARD AWKWARD) spot of attemptively-failingly-trying-to-maybe compliment the girl again to appease her worry.
Except that comment had really been all he could think of, which, again, made for a very painful (...ly AWKWARD) silence and-- oh, hey, he'd finished his plate. Nice to know he had a healthy appetite back, at least.

Oh huh, he had finished off his plate, hadn't he? That was good to see. She had to guess that it was a better show than just the 'adequate'.
Since he did have a little tendancy to downplay things as much as possible. Even when losing his temper (Oh the slight wilt at the thought. But it was hopefully not noticable). Not that it happened very often.
.. ...
Maybe.
Ha, she hadn't been witness to the 'black devil', so she wouldn't know, really. She hadn't seen him at REALLY scary. Just hurt.
.. ....
Physically and emotionally. Awwww.
"Oh... okay. Well...." she trailed off momentarily and scooped up the last few bites from her own plate before setting it on the side table (convenient little thing) then tapping on her knees.
.. ..
OH THE AWKWARD SILENCE.

The room was suddenly quiet then, almost eerily so, and Yossarian had to call upon every scratch of self-restraint to keep from squirming under the bed covers. There were no distractions left to keep them occupied; the food was finished, the plate was set aside, and... god, it was so still that he could practically hear the seconds ticking by.
Which said something, really, considering that the room didn't have a clock in it.
... s**t, was he supposed to speak up again or something? That trailing off of hers sounded so strange and uneasy, but it wasn't as if he had a conversation alternative to pull right off the top of his head, either!
He was already loathing the whole bed-bound thing too, because it meant that he didn't even have the option of getting up and walking off to do... anything, dammit. Ugh. Being an invalid just sucked beyond measure.
Think, think, think...
"....................."
GOD HE WAS FAIL.

Well she didn't exactly have anything to pipe up with either. Damn, one would think the special 'L' word would have made people a little more open in terms of conversation instead of sitting in an utter pile of awkward.
.. .... ......
Well what did lovebirds (she couldn't really say they were a 'couple'.. that felt more intimate (like 'Lovebirds' wasn't?) than Yossarian might have allowed) normally talk about?
Besides radiant goddesses and blinding radiance or whatever. That was more of a 'Dad Special'.
Ummm... umm...
.. ...
okay, well, the secondary vocal cords seemed to have determined that a little (not thunder or earthquake levels, though) purring was in order without her consent. So she'd just tag along on that ride for a bit.

O... kay. Now she was purring. That was better than moping, granted, but it still didn't give him a damned clue or immediate inclination to say anything productive!
And of course returning her little "sentiment" was completely out of the question because he DID NOT purr EVER. EVER. No really, he couldn't remember ever doing it and probably wasn't even capable of the sound. His 'false' cords had probably shriveled up and turned to dust years ago (or so he told himself repeatedly, refusing to think elsewise).
Fate didn't seem too keen on sparing them with any random distractions either, seeing as the rest of the family was (unbeknownst to him) caught up in a pleasant conversation 'round the dining room table. Ah ha ha, how ironic that the one time he wouldn't have minded his father barging in, the guy was missing in action.
"So..." Trying, trying, and... yep, FAILING EPICALLY.
He coughed into his hand and paused again, almost uneasily.
"What do you suggest now, w-- ........... Aster?"
She was obviously sticking around to keep him company, but they still needed something to keep themselves occupied that wasn't sitting there like a couple of awkward frogs in the Awkward Pond.

Welcome to Awkwardland. Current population: 2.
"I... don't know, really. I just didn't want you to be in here eating by yourself....."
Awkward pause.
"Then again, eating alone probably isn't as sad for you, so it probably didn't matter." Oh Aster, so down on her own sentiment within a few seconds of saying it. SIGH.
She was a raincloud over her own little parade known as happiness. Really, someone needed to beat her with an amnesia stick and reprogram her really really badly.
Only not. Because then she'd lose all of her Astercharm.
Well, she couldn't think of any activity that the two of them could do to entertain themselves for a while. Certainly daddy dearest could have dropped a hint or six at his son (ah ha ha).
But Asteria moved from her little side perch to crawl over to Yossarian's other side so she could rest next to him with a light sigh.
Nnn....
It felt strange to not have Kanda making some comment, Yossarian leering at him for it, and Shae trying to play peacemaker between them.

Dammit, why she always insist on putting him in these wretched emotional tight spots?! It was just so... so messy and frustrating and inconvenient for anyone to handle, let alone the sick!
But if he shut up and didn't say anything the woman was obviously going to just drag herself further down the OHAE IMMA RUIN MAH OWN FUN NAO road, which would leave her horribly depressed and in effect ruin his semi-pleasant-but-not-admitting-to-it-ever-ever-EVER mood by default, because... well, he couldn't just be a heartless b*****d and ignore her! Obvious wallowing was just too obvious!
"I wouldn't--..." Oh he was already anticipating a good choke on whatever pride he still had (if any, HA). "I wouldn't... go so far at to make that assumption. It could just as well be false."
There, see? He'd admitted it (just not really) sort of, right? This kind of thing was just way too damned difficult for him! He wasn't used to it! And particularly not in this house!
Although... huh, it really was strange to have Aster so close at his side and still hear nothing but their own voices. Granted that he'd been by himself for a good month beforehand and was used to being 'alone' in a lot of ways, but... No, he couldn't possibly have missed the others, right? Any idle wonderings about them were just for lack of anything better to think on, that was all.
No, really. Right?
"... When was the last instance you had contact with either of the other two?"
Seemingly random question and epic heartlessness fail go?

Oooooh, not a good question to ask. Definately not a good question to ask.
And it was painfully obvious too from the half-cringing look on her face before she sunk against his side a little with a frown. Oh god, she wasn't about to go into 'THANKS FOR REMINDING ME' sadness, right?
... ..... ..
Sigh
"You all vanished the same night. So the last time I saw Kanda was when you were yelling at me to go back up to my room and stay there and Shae a little before then."
Abandonment issues in a little clearer light?
Perhaps a little.
But she seemed reassured with a slight leaning against his side and resting her head against the shoulder of his 'dead' (not literally, right?) arm and purring quietly. Well, she had enough purr in her for the both of them.

Well s**t, that really DID make things a hell of a lot clearer.
Sure, Yossarian had figured that the other three had all split up in quick succession following his little running-away stunt, but... really? They'd fallen out immediately? And she had been the one left behind? Hell, he hadn't even realized yet that Shae was actually the one to beat him in fleeing first (if not for entirely different reasons).
...
Sigh.
"I... see." How unusually succinct of him, and stranger still that he didn't try to blurt out anything more, just sort of laying there in an odd silence while his little bed-partner (but not THAT WAY OKAY) leaned against his bad arm and went about her little purring trip again. What, was she trying to appease him? Or soothe away her own pathetically obvious misery?...
That he, of course, had (directly and indirectly) been the cause of.
God that ate at him in a weird way. But what was he supposed to-- oh. Oh right.
"... I apologize for any undue suffering on your part." O SHI-- had he really just said that out loud?! He was looking ahead, but... "It wasn't my intention."

Even more that the feeling of 'alone' had been something she'd been so happy to be rid of before it had returned once again.
But she didn't dote on it, at least not long, instead looking up to him as he apologized, a rather quizzical expression on her face, before she looked down to the patch of lighter-colored fur on his stomach, running a hand over his stomach to rest on the patch. Oh lord, somewhere Langston was having gushing with affection moments and not knowing why.
Unless he was watching, the peeping Tom.
"It's nothing that hadn't been fixed already." she replied, after a few moments of thought, staring at her hand (and oh how funny it must have felt for Yossarian to be in such an oddly intimate position) for a moment, before determining she didn't want to pull it away from that spot.
"Or at least is in process of getting fixed."
Awwww. That was almost sweet.
She shifted again, her head now resting so that the top was against the side of his jaw, head turned so she was looking towards him, but not at him due to the positioning.
Prrrprrrprrrprrpprrr
"Besides, I'm happy with the way things are right now, more or less."

Oh yes, Langston was no doubt close to hitting critical mass with his affections at the dining room table (poor Moacyr and Roselyn were so clueless why he'd taken to rambling about love for a solid ten minutes), but at least he wasn't there in person to make the situation even more awkward, so... it could've been worse.
Scar molestation was definitely something Yossarian had not been expecting, and it was painfully obvious when his stomach tightened reflexively under her fingers, seizing up for a good five seconds before it finally relaxed again (huh, strange).
This was... yep, just as predicted, a pretty oddly intimate setup in more ways than one. Not quite regrettable or worth panicking over (outwardly), but pretty awkward to boot anyway.
And still the purring. Always with the purring.
But it could've been worse. Maybe he'd kick himself for giving in, but...
"... The past won't be allowed to repeat itself any longer." His movements were still a little clumsier than he would've liked with one hand, though that didn't stop him from putting his good arm around her waist. It was a pretty damned weird gesture, and he wasn't used to it at all, but it didn't exactly feel unright, either. "You have my sincerest vow of such."
Damn, for such a cranky, beat to s**t and pathetically awkward invalid of a man, he fit that 'Knight in Shining Armor' cliche pretty well, huh?

It was awkward, and she seemed to shudder a bit, though obviously out of some odd reaction, when he put his arm around her waist. It wasn't as though anybody had really done it before, so a 'Ohmygodfeelsfunny' response was to be expected.
Knight in shining armor? She sure as hell thought so.
In fact, it had just turned into her little happy place. Sure a little silly and cliche on the surface, but it worked for her, settling into her little niche at his side and sighing contently. Well, no verge of tears in the near future at least.
In fact, she'd snuggled into his side and leaned her head against him at it's new spot, the purring continuing on...
Growing softer.....
and softer
and softer
and softer
Until it was silenced almost completely.
Asteria Georgelas had fallen asleep on him... but eh, it wasn't a bad way to be in her given company. Perhaps when she woke again she'd go help with laundry or something like that.
