3nodding It should work as it is. I believe I've hooked two computers up directly like that before. But you won't have internet for a bit.

I use a crossover cable for transferring stuff between computers. It fits right into the slot next to the phone jack and... works pretty well if one of the computers doesn't decide there's a problem.
You need to tell the computers which folders to share though. just right click the folder and go to security and sharing, or whatever sounds most like that, and check the box (change the name if you want...)
After that you can copy whatever you want without touching the first computer again.
Edit: You still need to do the network setup thing and sometimes it takes awhile for the computers to recognize each other.

*cough* A) Slot beside phone jack = Same slot an Ethernet cable fits in. B) I don't think it has to be a crossover cable, cuz I've done it with a straight through/Ethernet cable. C) She probably HAS an Ethernet cable already.

Maybe I misread but I could swear that you said the ethernet cable fit into the phone jack slot...
And what exactly is the difference between an ethernet cable and a crossover cable? (I'm really literate with popular software but not so much with hardware.)

No, I said it fits in the same slot as the one that goes to the modem. A crossover cable is almost identical to an Ethernet cable. The biggest difference.... Really, the only difference.... Is that there are 8 different coloured wires in either of them. (blue, blue/white, green, green/white, brown, brown/white, orange, orange/white) In an ethernet or straight through, the wires are in the same order on both ends. On the crossover, four of the wires, two of the coloured pairs, are switched. And they do nothing anyways.... So it's like...

Green------------------------------------------------------------Green
White/Orange---------------------------------------------------White/Orange
Blue---------------------------------------------------------------Blue

If you don't understand that, just accept that it's pretty well nothing. It's just coloured wires.
