You know what?

Lawlz, think outside the box. We are creatures capable of thinking beyond the immediacy of our own lives. Why do we buy life insurance?

-2 points to Maddox for using two question marks. My retort:
Something I Hate About Maddox

When people use two question and/or exclamation marks. Do they want to ask the question twice? Why not write it out, if life is so bloody long?

I've seen plenty of people die young, and others fight to stay alive. Life is short in the vast scheme of reality. That's my philosophy, and I'm stickin' to it. wink

I'm just wondering... what's your philosophy on the reason why we are living?

You know, it's nice to see some actual discussion on stuff once in a while.

@ Vaalll (get ready, this is long XDD): Yeah?? Cool!

I'm thinking about going there, seriously.

I just brushed Liz's teeth! God, this is going to take some getting used to, on her part. She kept licking the tooth brush. >> Wouldn't let me actually brush. But I think I managed pretty well in the end, for a first time. (: Even brushed her tongue.

And HOGOD, was yesterday ever the most eventful day in the world... I didn't talk about it then though because we were actually on a topic. Didn't want to ruin it. XD

Okay so first, I'm at the stables, riding. When it comes time to jump, my teacher puts the jumps up UBER HIGH. Like, higher than I've EVER jumped with her before (I tricked a sub teacher into keeping them up way too high for me a while ago... XP). But it's not only that they're high, it's that they're really close together, which is much much harder (but just for me and Diva) because you only have one strand in between the jumps to get yourself ready for the next one. So basically just one bump and then the horse is up again. Three consecutive jumps. Sandy (my teacher) put them a bit further apart later on to give me a break though. The first one was just a regular X jump that we do all the time:

User Image

Then she put up a vertical:

User Image

Which we haven't been doing for an overly long time, and certainly never at these heights (=DDDD). And THEN, she put up a monster, which I have never in my life ever done. Dreamt of doing it, but oh no. The legendary Oxer:

User Image

It's actually two fences in a row that are about a foot and a half apart, meant for the horse to saaail over. It's a lot more fun because you're up in the air longer. =D Wheeee! It may not sound like anything special, but it'll make my week.

THEN, exciting butnotinagoodway, Diva kicked Sandy. =S There was another horse bugging her, and she meant to kick the horse but she got Sandy straight in the thigh. Nothing broken, but she fell on the ground screaming. It was really really scary. I'm not going to spend time on this one because I was sort of at fault and I feel really terrible about it.

And then then theeen, I got an iPod skin, finally!! I'd been waiting for the price to go down for weeks and weeks. They started off at fifty bucks and my dad didn't want to spend that much on something worth two. So we waited. And waited. And waited. They were down to forty this week so my dad was just like aww, whatever. =DDDD So happy!

@ Your Post To Deimos: Do you mean why humans are here now, or what our purpose is?

@ Deimos: Awww, well. Silly comeback. Tsk. You choose to pick on him for a silly little thing like that. You're just a big baby. =D

Yeahyeahyeah, I get it. Rooooooooll. It's just, I find those people who say it constantly as a way to get other people to do things really annoying.

@ Ihabia: Well? Give it a try! What's your answer?

We live without reason. We are products of a chaotic existence, a series of consequences and events. There's nothing fatalistic about it, in my opinion.

There is no cause for which we are all designated.
As my dear friend Jean Paul Sartre would say, we are "condemned to be free."

"A series of consequences and events," (...or accidents) pretty much sums it up. XD It's what I'd have answered too, but I really wasn't sure that's what she was asking. :/ I'm for the theory of evolution, over the "theory" (or belief) of creationism. Definitely.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 12, 2006 10:54 pm

I'm going to have to agree with Deimos for the most part on this one. I don't believe there's any great meaning behind life, and I don't think we're all born with something that we're meant to do. I think life means what we want it to mean. I think that people can find something to live for, something that drives them to be whatever they are, or aren't. But, I don't think we're predestined for whatever that thing is. Life is up to us. Condemned to be free is right.
As to why we're even here, it's obviously (obvious to me at least) that it's nothing other than evolution. I don't believe that god created humans. I think god , if there is a god, created the conditions for life that allowed us to evolve. Or at least that's what I tell my christian friends. I'm not 100% sure what I believe when it comes to religion. But I am sure that we are human because we evolved as such, not because we were created from scratch.

Something I read somewhere, not sure where, but that I thought summed it up quite nicely. And I'm paraphrasing, by the way. "God didn't give us brains and the ability to use them, so that we could accept everything without question," or something along those lines. Basic idea is there, if the proper words aren't.

Deimos
Right.

You all echo my sentiment. There are many, many things in life to take pleasure in. I may be a cynic concerning love, but I'm a real hippie when it comes to loving life. Every minute. The pleasure and the pain. It's all we've really got. Just being conscious is euphoric.

Plus, if you've got your health, friends, and family - you're set. Sure, it wouldn't hurt having a significant other to spend time with, but it could be much, much worse.

Amen, brother.

There's a lot we can do in this life, and not nearly enough time to do it all in. That's why you gotta live the way you feel is right.

As per the theory of the meaning of life, it really depends. More often than not, people find their calling 'hidden in plain sight'; it's there in plain view, but at the same time hidden beneath layers of...stuff.

I really can't think of any other words to describe it, so I apologize if I seem to be sputtering nonsense. xD

In terms of evolution vs creation: I'm what one would call a 'Scientific Christian'. I'm a religious man (not an uber-religious zelot), but I also think everything through in a logical and scientific sense. In that, then, I've been trying to find connections between the word of God and the scientific community, to see if I can't bridge some gaps. I've got crackpot theories a'plenty, but I'm far too tired to get into them.

Incidentally, if anyone has any questions regarding Christianity, ask me in here. I'll answer your questions to the best of my ability, with no risk of getting all 'convert of burn!!!!1!!!11onetwo' on you.

But for now, I'm out for the night.

I'm not religious in the least bit. I know a few people who will bite your head off if you even mention the work "evolution", though. One would put her fingers in her ears and start saying "Adam and Eve" over and over again. O.o;

It just doesn't make any sense to me that two people would have populated the entire world. My boyfriend put it an interesting way, though. He feels that the bible isn't meant to be taken literally, but is like a big metaphor. So Adam and Eve were meant to represent two cities. He didn't give me anymore examples of what he meant, so I can't really give you any, either.

I, on the other hand, think we definitely evolved.

I also don't think that we're here for any specific purpose, other than your natural animal instinct, which is to reproduce. But not everyone has or wants to have children, so yeah. Being the non-religious person that I am, I also don't think that we have a chosen path, either.

So, um... yeah.

I feel you, Shaz. A bold move, considering finding Christains on Gaia is like mining for gold in a hobo's ear.

Concerning God versus evolution? I actually do believe in God. Just not any diety writ in stone. For me, athiesm overlooks possibility and places tremendous faith in the convention of man. Too much, in fact. When we rely on our cognitive abilities as the be-all-end-all of the universe, we severely limit our scope. We still die of disease, war, and famine. We're still confined to life on one planet, as opposed to the endless amount caught in that big black void.

Rejecting the possibility of God places blind absolution in science.
Preaching the definite pressence of God places absolution in man.

Both are fallible.

Some people see being agnostic as a cop-out. I see it as the only rational choice in an irrational universe. I think the bible has some concrete morality which can be usefull, as any text of faith would. As I think evolution is certainly a factor in our growth, and science necessary to reach new peaks of potential.

But to reject the possibility of a being of perpetual omnipotence - a being that can transcend our limited understandings of the universe - is something I'm not prepared to do. Acknowledging our own limitations is a part of understanding the grand scheme.

I think there's a reason why we live. I'll find that out after I die. xp
Because there MUST be something happening after it.
We can't just be nothing.. like forever?
Nothing happening to us, no emotions. It's like OVER.
That scares me. gonk

I believe in God.
But I don't believe that I have to go to church to talk to him.
I just do it everynight in bed.
I thank him for the life I have right now, etc.
And I actually do believe he's here for me when I'm going through obstacles.

I heard that the things that happened [written in the bible] were caused by aliens. confused

And I saw the movie C.R.A.Z.Y. [Did you see it LA?]
Well this lady was explaining to *Bob* [whatever his name was] that this guy was walking in the desert and there were 2 paths of foot steps. One were his and the others were Jesus'.
And at a moment he was going through a lot of obstacles and you only see one path of foot prints. So people thought Jesus gave up on the guy walking on the sand. But the lady said Jesus was still there, he was holding the guy to help him through his obstacles. So the footsteps we see are Jesus'.

I find that cute. whee
But I totally suck at explaining things. sweatdrop

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it: "LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The LORD replied: "My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

I don't believe in God, but it's one of the sweetest thing I've ever read.

Who's ready for one of my crackpot theories?

AGE OF EARTH: The Bible lays out the creation of our world over 7 days, but we have dated the Earth back several billions of years. Consider, if you will, the concept I have named 'Omnitime'. It's basically the idea that one day to God is much, much different than a day of our time. One 'God day' could be a matter of hours, minutes, or even seconds. On the flipside, it could be several decades, centuries, or even mullenia. How time is defined at that point is never specified, so it's up for grabs. But if my theory is correct, then the argument over the age of the Earth might end.
