And we also need a territory for them right now... so that would be a good thing to brainstorm on. 3nodding

*looks to Fire Bringer Map*
Link of Map (ignore my crappy scanning job)
Well, I would asume the herd lives along Scotland's west coast, probably either somewhere either west of the Great Mountain or south around Rurl's Beach/ Wolf's Waterfall...does that sound right to anyone?

Awesome ^_^ I think we're pretty much done. Just need to fill out the form.
PostPosted: Sun Jul 29, 2007 5:16 pm

k guys, so the form is due in like, 3 days or something so I've complied all our ideas and filled it out, and if you guys could read over it and like, add stuff, change stuff, take out stuff or whatever you think it needs, that would be great. I want you guys to ok it before we submit it. whee

Name of Herd: Hy Breasail
Herd Species: Red Deer
Herd Hierarchy: Lord of the herd, along with an advisory council made up primarily of the wiser elder deer. These are followed in rank by Captains, Outriders, Corps, and then the rest of the herd.
Role(s) of Stags: A small number of unblind outriders patrol the outskirts of the herd, however as they are close to the sea on one side, and the human village on another, there are few threats that come their way. On occasion, a stray wolf may wander near; however they are usually driven off by the humans fairly quickly. Because of this, some of the stags have now turned their attention to the inner workings of the herd. Because of the blindness disease, panic is quick to surface. The stags now keep the uneasy calm that surrounds the herd from surfacing into full chaos, dealing swiftly with those that create stir.
Role(s) of Hinds: For the most part, the hinds work as a collective group, caring for both the blind as well as their young. Those without the blindness helping out those who do, finding the best food, making sure they don’t wander to far from the safety of the herd.
Role(s) of Bucks: They help out the outriders where they can, and train so that they may one day become outriders. Their efforts now are mostly half hearted, as they understand there is no real need for them. Because of this, more and more are drawn the idea of leaving the area, joining the ever growing liberation movement.
Role(s) of Does: Mostly help out the hinds with their job, especially entertaining or watching the fawns.
Herd History:
They believe themselves to be descendants of the original guardian herd that once resided on the phantom island of Hy Breasail. The majority of the herd, made up of red deer, has a deformity. More then half are blind due to a genetic disfiguring by human cause. The deer that first started the herd were normal deer, however, were captured and became the breeding couples in a new human experiment in hopes of creating deer whose physical means suited the hunting humans best. With mixtures of feed they created, when the first batches of offspring were born it was discovered the food the hinds had taken from the humans caused blindness in the young. Not every member is infected with this genetic dysfunction, though it depends on the appetite the mother had during the gestation period, and how much of the human fodder she ate. Recently it seems that another of the foods is able to affect a few of the adult deer, though no one knows why some go blind and others don’t. However as new member come into the herd, some are frightened, finding themselves going blind. The herd is not corralled or even domesticated, however, with their lack of defense they stay in a general area near the humans’ village for protection of wolves and such. Of course, this also means they are picked off regularly by the humans, but many of them strongly believe that this is the curse placed upon them by Herne, and so there is nothing to be done, but try and repent for the sins of their ancestors.
Some though, are of a different opinion, and recently a new group of dissenters has arisen, who do not believe that the condition is due to a curse, but entirely the fault of the humans. These deer, who are mostly unblind, are angry at the leaders of the herd, feeling that it is stupid to not move the herd, and rid themselves of the blindness caused by man. They don’t want to be sitting ducks for the humans to pick off at will. This has created a great amount of tension within the herd, which does not look like it will evaporate anytime soon.
Herd Culture and Religion:
Long ago, when the world was younger, and man just beginning to find his place amongst the teeming masses of life surrounding him, the great god Herne created an island. For Herne was wise, and saw that man was developing faster than any other of the creatures on earth. He saw in the man, potential for many things, both good and bad. And one of these things he saw was ambition, and a lust for knowledge. He knew that man was starting to tame the earth, cultivating plants on his own, and building things from the wood of trees. And he understood that soon, that the world of man would overtake the earth, spreading its influence far and wide. So Herne created an island, separate from the land the men inhabited. And onto this island he placed many creatures of the land, so that perhaps here, they could be safe from the reach of man. Onto this island, he also placed a herd of deer, to watch over and care for the island and its inhabitants, ensuring peace and security. Around the island he placed a deep, heavy mist, unapparent to any residing within, however unable to see through from those on the mainland looking out to sea. This veil lifted only once every seven years, allowing the island to be seen for one day only, before retreating back into seclusion.
The idea worked well at first, however as time passed, Herne came to realize the herd he had created were not unified enough, and not performing the duties he had allotted them. So from the waters and the earth of the island, he created a leader, whom he named Ennis. Under the leadership of Ennis, the herd united, succeeding in performing its duties and Herne was pleased.
Everything was going rather well on the island, until one night, when Herne came to Ennis, bringing a warning of a great and terrible force that force that would soon land upon the island. It came in the form of men, who wished to discover this so called phantom island, and claim it for themselves. As the leader, it was Ennis’ job to lead the herd and protect the island from the men. Ennis gave his agreement. Like Herne had asked him to, he took the herd to the highest point, to see the danger which they would soon face. But the more Ennis saw of man and what they could do, the more afraid he became. When the time came to face the invaders, Ennis became cowardly, and, lying to his herd, he tricked them into fleeing across the waters to the mainland, leaving the island to ruin behind them.
Herne had followed and one night her confronted Ennis, asking why he had fled, broken his vow, and why he had tricked others to save himself. Ennis couldn't really answer. He was a coward, and even though a leader, selfish and deep down only believed in self preservation. Herne knew this, and so to punish Ennis, he cursed him AND his herd, and their descendents with a blindness and to forever stay in the clutches of the thing he ran away from; man.
Herd Territory:
The herd lives on the west side of the island close to the ocean, a little south of the wolf’s waterfall, and close to Rurl’s beach.
