How many people do you think would really give $20 to someone on the street they don't know? Very few. Society perpetuates that that is the right thing to do, and when asked, people say that they would, but in reality, it would almost never happen. In the end, I think that people will do what is best for themselves, and the desire for personal happiness will override that desire for social correctness, especially in this situation where nobody will know what you do anyway.

I agree with the people who say they would not give them the movie but buy them food instead.

But, if for some reason I couldn't get them food, I'm not against giving them a 20. Call me a communist if you will, so be it.

nothin' wrong with that

Morality is a lie, so...

I really want to say #1, because it is what is said to be the right thing to do. But I am being truthful with myself, and in reality, I would probably not give $20 to some person on the street I do not even know.

But if he asked me for some money, I would give him some, because I would feel very bad if I turned him away when I had money. It all depends on the situation, I guess.

Hmmm... I think I shall hit this topic on another level.

I read through this again and realized that the topic is not about the choice to give the man $20, that was nearly the example.

I guess I just wanted to say that I would rather be happy than correct. I would rather fail at something I believe in then succeed in something someone else believes in.

Then you get into the whole discussion: 'Would you really be happy if you failed.' No, so I think there should be a third choice to that question.

Would you rather be happy, right, or satisfied?

That is a very good point. I guess that I would not be happy to be right in someone else's beliefs, but I would be happy if I was right in my own eyes.

If the man seems bright enough I'd offer him a meal in exchange for his time. I use that time to better his life as much as possible. There's not telling what that would be just now, but I'm sure something would happen.

I think it's possible to do the right thing, and be happy. Life should be balanced. Besides, I think that no matter what you do, you do it for yourself. Even if you're doing something for someone else. If you're doing something for someone you love, you're doing it because you need them, and you want them to love you back. If you're doing something for a complete stranger, you're doing it because you want people to think you're a good person, and you want to feel good about yourself. Same thing if you're doing something wrong to somebody. You do it to protect yourself, or someone you love, or because it makes you feel better about yourself. It makes you feel like you have power. There are all kinds of other examples. But I would love to hear it if someone can think of an example where you're not just doing it for yourself.
I'm not saying that everyone is bad or evil, or we're all selfish. I think we're all basically good. I think everyone deserves happiness, even if you're a horrible person. But this is just the way things work. We evolved this way. I think the way it works out is pretty cool actually.
