Korean: Bae Yong-joon Offers Consolation to Japanese Earthquake Victims

User Image
Bae Yong-joon sent words of comfort to stricken fans and earthquake victims Tuesday after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Japan, according to Yonhap News. The earthquake killed at least seven people and sparked a small radiation leak and fire at the world's biggest nuclear power plant.

On his official Japanese website, Bae Yong-joon left a message on the forum board saying, ``after hearing about the situation of the disaster stricken region, I am worried about everyone's welfare.’’ He continued by adding, ``to my fans and all of the earthquake victims, I offer my wholehearted sympathy. By all means be safe.’’
Bae Yong-joon, known more famously as ``Yonsama’’ is the one of the most popular Korean actors in Japan, known for his role in various television dramas including the well-received ``Winter Sonata.’’ Hallyu or the ``Korean wave’’ refers to the recent popularity of South Korean popular culture including TV dramas and music in other countries, especially other Asian nations.

He ended with the words, ``I pray that peace of mind for all the people who have been evacuated comes as soon as it can.’’

Korean Singer Lee Hyori to Perform in US

User Image
The country's flagship music groups, collectively known as the "Big 4," will hold a concert in the United States. Now in its third year, the Big 4 will perform at the Manhattan Center in New York on Aug. 4 and the Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas on the 11th.

The Big 4 reflects the preference of its host US agency. After reviewing Korean artists, the agency selected 'sexy queen' Lee Hyori, the ballad powerhouses SG Wannabe and See Ya, and leading hip hop group Epic High to be a part of the production.

The Colosseum at the Vegas hotel where the concert will be held is an exclusive venue for pop star Celine Dion, who has been performing there for five years. Other star performers have included Elton John and Lionel Richie. Also late last year, Korean singer Rain held his world tour at this same location.

This latest concert targets American audiences, not just Korean Americans. The program will comprise music enjoyable to all listeners regardless of race and nationality. The singers will express the themes of joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure through their music. The background music and visuals will also aim to express Korean sentiments.

Korean: Which New K-Pop Group Will Be the Next Super Stars?

User Image
As if the public has not had enough of K-pop groups like TVXQ and Super Junior, a new batch of girl groups and boy bands are coming out this summer. This August, top entertainment companies S.M. Entertainment, CJ M.net Media and JYP Entertainment are introducing new groups that they believe will be K-pop's next big thing.

S.M. Entertainment will try to replicate the success of its super-sized boy band Super Junior with new all-girl group. The nine-member So Nyeo Shi Dae, which translates to The Era of Girls, will make its debut next month. To generate more buzz for the new group, S.M. Entertainment introduced the members one at a time. Individual videos showing the pretty, fresh-faced girls talking about themselves are also available on the Internet.
S.M. Entertainment said the group members would not just sing and dance, but also take on acting, modeling, DJ and emceeing jobs. This obviously follows the approach taken with Super Junior, whose 13 members are not just singers and dancers, but also actors, models, emcees and DJs.
The group is composed of Sunny, Yuri, Tae-yeon, Tiffany, Yoona, Soo-young, Jessica, Hyo-yeon and Seo-hyun. Jessica and Tiffany are fluent in English since they have been raised in the United States, while Hyo-yeon can speak Chinese and Soo-young can speak Japanese.

S.M. Entertainment has a mixed record when it comes to launching girl groups. While it scored a success with S.E.S. in the late 1990s, S.M. Entertainment's recent girl groups have yet to achieve the same level of success. Cheon Sang Ji Hee The Grace is slowly gaining popularity, while I-13, a girl group that debuted with Super Junior last year, barely made a ripple in the music scene.
Another girl group that is set to debut in August is Black Pearl. The four-member group is produced by CJ M.net Media, the same company who produced R&B stars SG Wannabe and Seeya.

Black Pearl is composed of Cho Young-su, Kim Do-hun, Min Myoung-ki and Han Song-hu, whose ages range from 17 to 25. Their first single shows off Black Pearl's vocal talent, following in the footsteps of Seeya.
CJ M.net Media also recently introduced FT Island, a five-member boy band who released their first album ``Cheerful Sensibility'' last June. The group, whose name stands for Five Treasure Island, is gaining fans because of their good looks and pop-rock music.

JYP Entertainment, former management company of K-pop star Rain, is also introducing a boy band this August. The company had launched a girl group Wonder Girls, who released their mini-album last February and already has a reality show on MTV.
With all new faces in the K-pop scene, it will be very interesting to see who gets the public's attention this summer.

Korea: Fans of Super Junior Attack Again

Lee Teuk, member of Korean boy band Super Junior, admits that he lies about the link exchange on July 30. Recently Lee Teuk says in a TV program ‘School of Rock’ that figure skater Kim Yeon-ah refuses to exchange links with him on his cyworld minihompy. After the broadcasting of this program, crazy fans of Super Junior attack Kim Yeon-ah’s mini homepage. They leave more than 2,000 hateful comments on Kim’s cyworld minihompy. Kim Yeon-ah has to clarify that she has never refused such an invitation.

Yesterday Lee Teuk says that he just wants to make an interesting topic in the TV program and doesn’t expect such a bad consequence. He is terribly sorry about that and will not say such hasty words any more.

Korean Singer Rain Pounds Kosdaq Stocks

Rain has proved that he is a world famous star, with enough influence to make a number of Kosdaq shares fluctuate. Hantel, a Kosdaq listed IT company that seems to have nothing to do with entertainment, see-sawed at news related to Rain. Kim Woo-chang, the CEO of the event planning company White World, announced Tuesday that he had acquired 2.5 million shares, or a 6.9-percent stake, and managerial rights in Hantel for 5.8 billion won. Rain is the biggest shareholder in White World.

Investors interpreted the news as ``Rain advancing onto the Kosdaq,'' or White World seeking a backdoor listing. Entertainment firms, in most cases, are not qualified for listing on their own, and have often sought backdoor listings by taking over listed firms in financial trouble. Their shares skyrocketed initially but some of them plummeted afterward as they had no stable income source, leaving individual investors as the biggest victims.
Hantel was no different. The news immediately pushed up Hantel to 2,280 won.

However, after his father announced that Rain has nothing to do with an M&A at Hantel, the share prices plunged to close at 1,895 won Wednesday - a drop of nearly 14 percent. ``White World is suffering from capital erosion. It doesn't even meet the conditions for a backdoor listing,'' Rain's father told reporters. He added that Rain gave up his stake in White World, to stop rumors such as the backdoor listing. Hantel closed at 1,850 won Thursday, falling even further.

Sejong Robot, also listed on the Kosdaq, once soared to 3,415 won early this year upon expectation that White World would acquire it. However, the latter gave up, and now the robot manufacturer is trading at around 1,500 won.
Star M Entertainment, which was in charge of Rain's concert in Los Angeles, is also seeing a hard time on the Kosdaq after the concert was canceled. Its shares rose to above 4,300 won in May upon rumors that Rain would join the entertainment company. Its shares are now trading at around 2,000 won.

"The entertainment industry is in a slump. Investors should consider the financial condition of the firms rather than recklessly pursuing stars,'' an analyst said.
Experts warn that investment made based on unidentified information could incur a huge loss. They should take special heed regarding M&As, as there is the risk of the deal becoming unstuck.

Korean Pop Group TVXQ Tops Oricon Chart

Korean pop idol group TVXQ has finally topped the Japanese music chart. Its 12th single 'Summer Dream' topped the Oricon daily single chart on the first day it was released Wednesday.

Excluding Ryu Si-won, whose acting fame boosted his chart rankings, the number one ranking is the first by Korean male singers. Heavyweight Japanese singers released their albums on the same day but they failed to rise above TVXQ
The milestone comes 2 years 4 months after the pop idol group released their first Japanese single in April 2005. It also took pop icon BoA considerable time to reach the top of the Oricon chart.

But TVXQ's number one ranking was predicted from early on. Starting with its second single in July 2005, which made the top ten, all 13 of their albums including two regular ones had all entered the Oricon top ten. Their 11th album last month climbed to second place, indicating its likely number one ranking.
