Sergeant Sargent Jephthah stared at the surgar packets in the tray. Fortunately, he wasn't much for wondering about the ways of the world. Things simply were or they weren't, not that this method of reality always pleased him, there were certainly many things to be disatisified about, such as wearing ties, telephones that ring, and jazz. Watching Meryl fool around with the surgar packets was amusing in an embaressing sort of way, so he tried to make himself bored. You're more dignified when you're bored. Funny, Meryl didn't seem to be lying about her job. In fact the issue of whether or not she lied was unaturally fuzzy, like he was seeing with his eyes crossed. He tried blinking hard. "What's that supposed to mean?" he said, a little upset over the problems she was causing. "What it means is that I'm the resident exorcist at the Fortress of Doom," she said, remembering what Meryl had always told the shadow, concerning her nontraditional method, 'sometimes it's better to get something done quietly and effectively than quickly.' The shadow had always liked Meryl, and Meryl the shadow. Both were easygoing and playful enough to get along. She grabbed a straw, ripped off the end of the paper, and blew off the rest of the wrapper, hitting the angel in the shoulder. Meryl, within her head, was dripping with embarassment. "I mean, and they cover everything with paper, too! They say they want to save trees? Just look at this, then," she said, pointing to her small pile of sugar packets, "that's all trash, it'll just be thrown away. They ought to quit their complaining, yanno. But anyway," she said, brandishing the straw and poking it at Jeppy's coffee, "Can I try some of that? It smells kind of noxious, but everyone's drinking it here, so it can't be that bad."

Two events conviently broke his train of thought he could begin to drool with envy for Meryl's impressive job title. First, Meryl's straw crumpled against his shoulder. Second, a giant butterfly. Jephthah's eyes scooted to the edge of their sockets as he leaned away from the faerie, his feathery wings bunched up in distress and, well, confusion. He looked at the surgur. He looked at the faerie. Then he said, "Sure."
Jephthah turned to Meryl. He nodded slowly and passed her his coffee, watching the butterfly faerie out of the corner of his eye. Insect wings.... Made him want to shudder.

"Thanks so much," Bleu smiled at the angel and his companion. Oh, now what?!? Okay, just calm down. You are a Fairy of the High Council. You are confident. You don't normally talk. No, no, be confident. Shine with it, like Luminous. Oh, think, what would Adora do? "So, where do you two come from?" Bleu asked with a big smile, hopefully not overdoing the enthusiasm.

"Well, I finally got out of the Fortress of Doom for the day," said Meryl, smiling and stretching her arms over her head. Muscles, bones, ligaments... it all felt so wonderful, and a comfortable and inviting mind, too. It was never like this at home, not at all. While the Angel wasn't looking, she stuck her straw into his coffee and took a sip. With that, she yelped and cried, "It's hot!"

Nyte poked his head into the doorway. Nope, no sign of Davri anywhere. This didn't even look like a bar. Shrugging, he went inside anyway. The 12-year-old brushed his hair behind his ear and bit his lip, approaching the group of people in the cafe. Couldn't hurt to try. Drat, he really needed to cut his hair...
"Hey, um, excuse me..."

"Oh!" Bleu yelped in sympathy as she poured sugar into her own cup. "The one thing the coffee is, besides awful, is hot." She stirred and tasted it again. "You know, I really don't think it's worth it," she said, putting the cup on the table. "Fortress of Doom? Uh - that's not in Dinelly, is it?" It certainly didn't sound like something in Dinelly. Unless you're from the South, in which case I might have to flee . . .

Jephthah jumped. "Well, of course it's hot," he snapped. "It's coffee. It's not cold. Son of God." He moved the coffee back to his side of the table and fixed her with a chiding glare that only lasted for a few seconds. Then he glanced at the faerie, never quite meeting her eyes. "Purgatory. Where are you from?"

The chair creaked as Jephthah turned around to face Nyte. His eyes were increasingly like hot coals, burning and growing brighter with each new face that dared interrupt his quiet day at the cafe.

Those could be a pain in the a**, too. "Why the hell would anyone want to drink anything that hot? It's so hot I can't even taste it! It's... that's dumb!" said Meryl with a grimace.

Nyte blinked and stared back at the angel, who was literally smoking with rage. Yikes.
Biting back the urge to ask 'isn't wrath a deadly sin?' he instead squeaked out, "Have you seen a man with brown hair over one eye?" He gestured helpfully with one hand. "I don't suppose you have. Sorry to have bothered you." He backed away slowly.

"It's probably just as well. I'm from Dinelly, the Second Realm. More specifically I'm from the Fairy Realm. "Um, is there something the matter?" she asked the newcomer.

"No kid, I haven't," Jephthah grumbled. He serveyed the crowd exasperantly and wondered when his table became a black hole for every strange creature that happened into this cafe. Then he remembered the sign outside, the one about friendly conversation, interaction, and meeting new people, and he took a deep breath.
"Okay. So, tell me more about this Fortress of Doom." He started to smile. "How does one get to work there?"

Nyte turned to the fairy with a relieved sigh. "I've lost my teacher." Wandering over to the next table, he grabbed a chair and sat down. "I get the feeling he'll show up when he wants and this seems as good a place to wait as any."
