Myles walks out on the school roof. He puts a heavy weight down with a string tied to it, and uses the string to draw a circle with chalk. He takes out a compass and puts a gemstone at north, then four more gemstones finishing the points of five.
Then he takes out a brass cylinder. Unscrewing the top and casting it aside, he focuses on the glittery ribbon of gold, like a long thread of Christmas tinsel, that springs forth as if alive. He holds out his finger to the end and guides it to the center of the circle.
And then all at once the prodigious length flows out into the masonry, causing ripples like a heat haze around the entry point. With a snap and a flash, the end of it disappears into the stone, and the walls of the school tremble slightly, and the grounds around it shake with a very light tremor.
"And that should seal the school and grounds from teleportation spells of any kind."
One by one, he picks up the gems and scuffs the chalk circle where they had laid. And then he goes back down into the school.

Mylian goes carefully to the chest which had been waiting patiently all this time next to the broken circle and opens it, taking out the items from earlier. She closes the points of the circle with the chalk, this time with smaller circles bridging the gaps instead of a smooth circle. She places the gemstones back into the smaller circles, then kneels down at the center holding the brass tube and feeling the stone with her fingertip. "If I'm careful, I can extract it whole without losing it."

Tay watches Myles work. "Are you really... really a girl?"

Myles finds the thread with her fingertip and draws it away, placing it to the end of the brass tube. As the golden thread is wound back into it, she replies, "At the moment, yes."
She caps the tube, collects the stones, scuffs the circle, and puts everything in the trunk, closes it, and reopens it to pull up the door.
"Polytool, I need a cane!" A small clockwork dragon hops out of the door, straightens up into Myles' hand, and becomes a fashionable walking stick.
She starts up the steps. "My hybrid half is something from another world. In its species, male and female are so close together that they can switch at will. What causes me in particular to change, I'm still trying to track down. So far it seems a full-body shift will trigger it, but not always. Come on inside, the trunk can travel faster than we can and we can wait in my workshop for it to move the door to our destination."

Tay walks up to Myles at the steps.
"Whatever it is... I like it." She kisses Myles on the cheek and rushes up the steps with a blush.

Myles blinks for a second, then ascends the steps carefully. The door closes behind her and sinks into the chest, which closes and locks. And then it gets up on its insect legs, climbs down the wall, and skitters quickly towards the Disterent Point.
