I agree with you both.
We only actually see what Sasuke knows about the entire clan being wiped out. We only see the world through Sasuke's young eyes, so we don't really know if he was too young to comprehend something that was going on, or if Itachi did it reluctantly or not.
I've had a feeling all along that Itachi hadn't snapped or anything, but on one episode, it may have just been my imagination, but didn't Itachi's eyes look as if he were possessed at one point?
Exactly. The point in the anime i think your talking about is when young Sasuke goes into that room where Itachi and his parents were and Itachi turns from the shadows and his eyes look really funny.

I think Orochimaru killed them all. Then to give Sasuke some kind of purpose and a reason for Itachi to leave he(Itachi) showed Sasuke an implication that he killed them all.
Because really, how would you react if you found that an elite missin-nin Sannin killed your entire clan because your older brother refused to be his body? How would you comprehend that one of the most powerful ninja that you (at the time) have no chance to kill, has massacred your whole life and family?

Because something like that would drive a child like Sasuke insane. Yes he still got mental damage from what itachi showed him but inside of that damage Itachi gave Sasuke salvation in a purpose.(sheesh you still saw your entire clan die, of COURSE your going to be ******** up in the head a little.)

Test your powers? Youre a damn ANBU Captain and you chopped off a Sannins hand. How much powerful then THAT are you?
Test your limits? Fricken jump off a cliff and try to use your chakra to save yourself. THAT is testing a limit. Killing your clan? Thats a load of crap. I bet half your clan isnt even ninja. Thats no test.
Test yourself? See above answers. Plus you could have sparred against other ANBU captains or something.
Besides look at Itachis personality. He wouldnt have the patience or the ammount of blood luyst to kill all those peopl. If he truly wanted to leave he would have just gone all '******** it im gone.' and just left maybe knocking out a person or two, or trapping them in tsukuyomi(Sp?).
He may have been planning to leave that night or some time soon but I dont think he planned to kill the clan or even for them to die.
As for ItaXSaku? I hope and pray there are future encounters but I think its highly doubtful.
