. . . That doesn't make any sense.

I'm not saying I think you're fibbing, but as far as I knew canon said Yukina was held by Tarukane for five entire years, not two.

Are you going by the original Japanese version, the translated manga or the dub? I was going by the translated manga, so perhaps it's incorrect as compared to the Japanese version.

JesanaeTekani
I'm skeptical that the age difference between chibi!Yukina of the flashback and adolescent!Yukina of the series is only two years, especially given that they're demons and probably age slower. Even five years is pushing it when it comes to having physically aged that much. And I'll accept that Hiei glimpsed her once, if she was not on the island (which he couldn't find), but it could not have been after he got the Jagan. I maintain that he had to have gotten the Jagan eye an extremely short time before the series begins, for the reasons I listed above.

I agree that Yukina seems a LOT older for just two years. And as it's been said, that flashback was probably just shoved in without regard to the actual story since I couldn't find it in the manga. When he sees her as a chibi, he has his headband on. It's true that he could have worn it before getting the Jagan, but I am cannot remember off of the top of my head whether he wore one in various flashbacks. And I agree that Hiei must have gotten the Jagan directly before the series begins as he was so weak and Koenma later explains that the power must be slowly brought back after that drastic an operation.

JesanaeTekani
As for why nobody did anything for five years, I blame bureaucratic error in Koenma's case and surmise that Hiei hadn't yet known she needed to be rescued; if he saw her once, and that was before she was captured, he wouldn't have known she was missing until he got his Jagan a few years later and actually found the island. That's really the only plausible explanation for why Hiei dithered around and didn't manage to find her for so long. We know it was already one of his goals to find her before he got the Jagan eye, but that may have merely dovetailed with his goal to find the island and kill everyone on it -- except for her.

Agreed, Koenma probably has a lot of things to do. The reason I came up with the idea that Hiei knew Yukina was missing is because of what he says in the manga--"It's been two years since I learned she was missing." However, that doesn't necessarily mean that he knew she was kidnapped, only missing from the island.

JesanaeTekani
For the record, I'm not sure I agree that Yukina never had a father. As far as I used to understand it, koorime genes are generally dominant -- even if you commit a no-no and have sex, the child is still an ice maiden. If every time a koorime got restless and disobeyed that rule resulted in a distinctive offspring, there'd have been far more Forbidden Children on record than just Hiei. It's a pretty restrictive society, so it's absurd to assume that no one but Hina has done such a thing, but most women would probably not ever risk it if there were any chance they'd be found out in such an obvious way. My old theory used to run that perhaps fire demon genes were similarly dominant, and thus you can have twins with opposite characteristics. This solves the two-eggs problem also.

So wait, you're saying that Hiei and Yukina share a father, but that since Yukina was a girl and Hiei a boy Hiei was forbidden and Yukina not? This does make sense, unless you apply human birthing rules to the Koorime (something I'm not sure is logical) because as far as I know, the only way twins can be born that are not of the same sex (and therefore not identical) is with two eggs. Unless I misunderstood your meaning...

JesanaeTekani
In any case, can you maybe provide me with manga scans or something? My dearth of YYH manga is probably to blame for a large portion of my disagreement -- much as I think my theory makes more sense, manga trumps us all. I also wouldn't mind untranslated manga -- I know someone who reads Japanese and who could tell me the exact translation, in case the two years thing was an error.

I will post some translated manga seeing as I don't have the untranslated...V.V

I believe that came from the original Japanese version. I try not to use the dub too much if I can avoid it, since (while I adore it) it does take some liberties with the script.

He doesn't wear one in the flashback to losing his tear gem, but I think he does wear one in the flashback to when he was a chibi himself (when he was toting around that big sword and wearing a cape). I know he doesn't when he's flashing back to getting his Jagan, but that makes sense anyway since it would have needed to be out of the way. It might be that he has the Jagan in the flashback because the animator wasn't thinking about it; I've discovered several other minor animation errors in the series before (one of which turned into a rabid plot bunny).

Yes, that's essentially what I'm saying. When two sets of absolutely dominant genes collide, having one offspring with one set and another with the other set is theoretically possible, and isn't any less plausible than any of the rest of the series as it relates to demons. I think it makes more sense than assuming Hina had two eggs going, which doesn't really work in the context of the koorime, given the setup for their breeding cycle.

....That's a good question. The manga says Yukina gets captured when she wanders off to play with animals. So I'm assuming Yukina wandered off the island--considering the elevation of it, after all; no one has gotten there in ages. So it's possible that Hiei was able to find her after she wandered off the island after he got his Jagan.

*mind spins* Did that help at all?
makes good enught sence to me

So, the original egg split is your theory? Makes more sense than anything I've heard, and given that we don't (and probably never will) understand demon biology, I'm accepting it as likely.

During Yuusuke's fight with Toguro, just after Toguro has declared his intent to kill Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama are speaking to each other and preparing to rush Toguro so they can save him. Kuwabara turns back to them and tells them no. In Kurama's reaction shot, his eyes are bright red for no particular reason, and they're only that way for that single half-second shot.

This turned into a bunny involving the Shadow Sword from the beginning -- when I think red eyes, I think Hiei, and since when he hit Keiko with the Sword it conferred an aspect of him on her (a Jagan), I always wondered what effect it might have had on Kurama's technically human body. What if he gained some aspect of Hiei as well, and it's been slowly changing him ever since, and only the two of them know about it?

Hence my official Nerd badge. >.<

Yeah. It's hard to get closer than that. Either the egg somehow split pre-fertilization, or it split post-fertilization and one half got all the mother's genes and the other half all the father's.

I should really go back and rework some old theories. I used to have one about Kurama vs. Youko, and I think I also had one about something else I can't remember. I'll make a series! xd

I am SO sorry this took so long. My scanner was broken, I forgot about the conversation, etc...^^' Okay, here's a scan of the YYH manga English version.

User Image

This is directly after the Yukina-saving mission, and the panels that are cut off are just Botan and Yusuke talking about how it was lucky that Hiei didn't kill Tarukane. Hope this gives some clarity as to something...

"hen again, that one probably just a dubbing error. Funimation seems to make a lot of those. "

Actually I belive this was done on purpose by Funimation, not a dubbing error. Hiei lies to Yusuke after the Yusuke & Kuwabara's first fight with Toguro on the Rescue Yukina mission and tells him that he and Yukina are only half-siblings. He says it's because they did not share the same mother. This obviously turns out to be untrue during the latter half of the series in which we do find out that Hiei and Yukina shared the same mother, Hina (in ep.100 "The Secret of the Jagan." This means that Hiei could have lied to Yusuke because he still did not trust him well enough yet, or because he needed a good excuse to stay as far from Yukina as possible to keep from being suspicious. When Yusuke asked Hiei why he would not tell Yukina he is her brother he replied "it's better this way" since he can watch her and keep Yukina safe from a distance. It's very sad, but there is almost overwhelming evidence that the reason Hiei does not tell her is because he feel's ashamed to have her know about his past and thinks she would be ashamed as well.

Ah~ You know, if I'd been paying better attention before, I'd have realized that it's been two years since Hiei found out she was missing, not necessarily since she's been missing. That makes a bit more sense, I guess, although one does have to wonder what the hell he was doing in the interim. But then again -- he probably spent those two years looking for her in the demon world, and that's why he eventually got the Jagan eye, which then enabled him to locate her, or at least to confirm that she wasn't in the Makai so he could widen his search to the Ningenkai.

That brings us right back to the problem with Shigure, though -- if Hiei didn't find out he even had a sister until he got his Jagan eye, which he can't have realistically gotten very long before the series, yet he found out two years ago that his sister was missing, but he didn't find out he even had a sister until he got his Jagan eye . . . eek *falls down*

EDIT: Or maybe it's not an error. More manga scans, bitte? Because it depends on Hiei's phrasing when he's talking to Shigure. If he says he didn't know he had a sister until Rui told him, then it's likely to be a canon error -- but if all he says is that Rui told him about his sister, that doesn't discount his having known before that. He might not have been able to find the floating island, but he would sure as hell have been able to find her and watch her sometimes if she was leaving the island periodically (as people have said she was). And I guess it makes more sense if he did already know about her; his memory is supposed to be eidetic, and has been ever since he was born, right? So he would have known and remembered from when he was an infant that he had a twin sister. Gods know the koorime were jabbering about it enough in the flashbacks.

EDIT EDIT: So I was reading the Two Shots manga, and when combined with the manga scan you just gave me, it provides us with a very specific timescale for Hiei's Jagan implant. He got it about two years before the series.

This shoots holes in all my theories, but I'll run with it, and see if I can't construct a timeline out of it.

A) Hiei knew from the start that he had a sister since his memory has been eidetic from birth, but didn't have it as one of his specific goals to find her -- just the island. Since she lived there, that makes sense, because he would find them both at once.

B) He discovered that she periodically left the island to play with animals, and watched over her at least once -- hence the flashback scene during the Rescue Yukina mini-arc.

C) He was sidetracked by something or other and didn't see her for three years or so, or else he looked for her, didn't find her, and assumed she had merely stopped leaving the island.

D) He found out independently of Rui that she was missing, probably through local rumor or chance information, given that he was still looking for the island also and would have been gathering data on it wherever he could (plotbunnyplotbunnyHO!).

E) He stepped up his search and got the Jagan implanted in order to find her/the island/the tear gem, and spent some time learning to swordfight with Shigure.

G) He went to the floating island, talked with Rui, had her confirm everything he already knew -- because he's just that careful -- and left again.

H) He tried and failed to find her in the Makai even with his Jagan, and (now that he was low-level enough to pass the kekkai, having been an A-class demon before the implant) he left for the Ningenkai to look.

I) He met Kurama while on the trail of a demon he thought had eaten a koorime -- this was purportedly one year before the series.

J) He either got distracted by the magical shinyness of the Shadow Sword or meant to use it to somehow further his search, and was subsequently knocked down by Yuusuke.

K) Things in the series progress as we know.

This means he did dither around and fail to bring his power back up much after the implant -- but I suppose that he really hadn't needed to yet. It looks like he spent most of his time after that (about a year and a half out of the two years) in the Ningenkai, where he might not have needed much power. Most low-class demons can live quite comfortably there if they're clever, which Hiei is. My only question is why it took him so damned long to find her -- even if he couldn't track her with his Jagan, wouldn't places where demons were present have been his first areas of search? And especially where lots of low-level demons were squatting together and not killing each other, which indicates something beyond simple hiding out?

Maybe I'm just thinking too much. o.o

Once again, I fail to remember one of the best threads I've seen in a long time for several months in a row!

Anyway, I think your timeline seems about right. And as for why it took him so long...maybe he didn't want to find her? Perhaps he was trying to avoid her...? It doesn't really make sense, but it's all I can think of.

Sorry for being gone for 4 months and then having nothing to show for it... sweatdrop

It's a possibility . . . although I'm not sure why he'd be avoiding finding her, especially since he knew she was missing and might be in danger. It could just be that he tunnel-visioned and didn't think of it. *shrug*

I'm also taking back that he had to have found out she was missing independently of Rui. For Shigure to have given him the conditions he did for the Jagan implant, Hiei basically only had to know about Yukina, not know she was missing. His goal to find her and to find his people was pretty much the same up until they were no longer in the same place; I suspect it was held mentally as a separate goal so that he didn't lump her in with the village full of women he intended to exterminate.
