It's simple. The jewelry is so expensive, because it's top quality. Industrial strength jewelry isn't cheap, Plain and simple. If the jewelry is made by a well known company, and it's Top of the line, it won't be cheap.
I could go out and buy a $20 Titanium navel curve, but for $20, It's probably coated, and not anodized, Theres no way in hell it would be internally threaded, and the gems would probably be glued in instead of bezel set.
In all my experiences with buying body jewelry, you get what you pay for. I'd rather spend more money initially and have the jewelry last, than buy cheap jewelry and have the coating wear off or the stones falling out.

In defence of the expencive jewelry:
For some, the more expencive jewelry/higher quality isn't a luxury, it's nessicary to maintain the piercings. I can wear cheap metals in my lobes and my tragus, but if I wear cheaper jewelry in my helix piercings or navel, I have all sorts of problems- swelling, discharge, irritation, etc.
If cheap acrylic curves irritate my navel and an anatometal one doesn't, then I'll get the expencive stuff and just have considerably fewer pieces. I'd prefer that to constant problems.

That's worth it I think. I need something more specky for my eyebrow piercing but I just never have the money. Atm I have the bar I got when I got it pierced and a green metal ball on top...
