Tristan smiled at the elder as she stepped out of the shadows. Now there was a one he would love to tread the beat of the world beside. Such a form! And a voice! A voice like water, like fire, like wind and storm and the world itself. So perfectly it fitted with the roars of the city and yet so too it would blend with any of the images that had flashed thought his mind on seeing and hearing her. Anywhere this wonder could rule, any dog or vixen she could command and what greater purpose could he have but to be one of those that made harmony to her lead?

"A thousand thanks, Melody," the dog-fox said with a deep dip of his head to the red-splashed female. "I should dearly love to walk by your side and hear the way you change the song by your presence alone. It would be an honour and a privilege, my lady, to serve however you have need of me; my ears hear much that could be of worth to the Sanguine Lady."

So saying, the pale-furred male got back to his paws and bowed to the elder before him. Appropriate respects paid, suitable words said, Tristan sank back into a sitting position, eyes unfocused, to hear what would happen next. Doubtless it would be beautiful now that this new player had come to the stage. Whatever her born name was, from his day she would be the Melody to him; the pattern in the world that he followed. Stars her voice!

First the duo was taken back by the immenance of the green female's posture, and even more so with the entrance of this elder. However, her eloquent, gentle spoken nature made them churr inwardly. From the stories they had heard from thier parents about the elders they had met so far, though ironically eneough-not about thier lands, they had been incredibly inspired by the blood-stained female they reffered to as "Sonia". What's more is that when they were so inclined to change, she had not even assumed the form of an elder. As she brushed thier heads and tails, their tails stayed in the low-hanging, relaxed position. The nodded to her directions and began to walk in the direction, first looking back after a few feet, but as they went on and became more confident, they didn't need another look. While they walked, they contemplated and discussed the meaning of "Far worse". The brothers exchanged comments about the fire-trailed male that Sister had chosen and the few others they had met, though they seemed nice. They supposed it must be foxes of another tribe.
Gin noticed and pointed out the scent of meat first, not with words, but with the perk of his entire body. He ran ahead of his brother, who did manage to keep pace, and they spotted what a human would call "Leftovers" or "Trash", but to them it was life.
Kin tore into the meat with his brother, trying to make it as equal as possible. They had eaten eneough to let them travel the rest of the way and satisfy the accusations of the green female. They lapped up rain water from a trashcan lid and made thier way over the bridge and to the hill. They scanned the horizion for thier lands, but as expected, they didn't see them yet. Kin turned to his brother and grinned, filled with the enthusiasm of thier stupidity to get so far lost. Their tails wagged with anticipation for home and continued.

Rina relaxed and bowed low when the elder of the Syndicate came. While she did her best to appease the angry, and neutralize conflict, she was not sure she could have succeeded in the case of the green vixen. Perhaps, if she had more time in which to speak with the other...

But Rina would not think of 'what ifs'. The problem had been satisfactorily dealt with, and it did not matter if it was not of her own causing. It was never a problem to accept the help others offered.

"Sonia..." Rina whispered, barely remembering spending time with the blood stained vixen in their childhood. She had lost so many memories of that time gone past, and she was saddened by their loss. But perhaps brother remembered, and could remind her. Had he been there, in any rate. She could barely remember. It seemed all of the voices and faces of her past--spare brother's--had left. She had experienced the same with Toki. And now Sonia. Who else had she known, and then forgotten, their memory erased by time?

A memory stirred at the mention of Galatea, though. The strangeness, the unexpected words...Had Sonia not introduced her to poetry? Rina thought she could remember asking the other about it, at the least. Although that could be a false memory, conjured by her desire to not loose her own past.

"Thank you for your welcome, Elder Sonia." It felt as if a tribe as unique and creative as these ought to have a suitably unique name for their leader. But as to what that name might be, Rina could not begin to guess, and so would not.

"I would love dearly to see what you have wrought here," Rina said with a smile, no longer looking distant and unsure. There was a hint of eagerness and enthusiasm now, although still suppressed, beneath other cares.

Would she find her place here at last? She was yet uncertain. It had been easy enough to eliminate the others, even brother and Kazuki's Lunarie, and Kousetsu, where it seemed she and her calm nature ought to best fit.

Was that the sign that this was her place? Or did it merely mean that, while this was more her place than the others, it was still not to be her home? She had not yet adapted to the city, after all, and every shout and cry and siren scream made her start once again in surprise.

Sonia watched the kits go with a smile. "Dear little things. I hope they are more representative of the tribe than their fathers - they at least showed a few grains of sense. Now, if you two will kindly follow me..."

She was beckoning to Rina and Tristan now, showing them the way into an alley. Hylden was soon at her side.

"As long as you remain with us, you are safe in Sanguinite territory. Stray too far from us, and one of the other members - though we are few - may consider you a threat as Hylden did. Come, see what we have to offer you. I think you wil be pleased."

"Mother?"

She turned. The huntress had spoken, her tone its usual deadpan. "Yes, my Sanguinia?"

"In the future, I wish to have comrades with whom to patrol. Ones who can speak as I cannot, and better judge strangers. Would this be possible? Allowable?"

Sonia nodded slowly, picking up the tiny cues that meant Hylden was relaxing. "I hope so, my Sanguinia," she said, heading into the shadows. "I most certainly hope so."

The pale-coated modifox gave a slow nod as the elder's voice filtered through the Song and registered in his brain. Safe with her. He wanted to be safe. It never went well for him when fights occurred; he was no good with teeth and claws, no good at all.

Ears perked forward, Tristan got to his paws and trotted after the Melody of the area he had been so fortunate as to stray into. She had said... said that she might have things to offer him. It seemed strange to the green-eyed dog fox that things would be played this time around. Why would a Melody need to give to a simple listener with his paltry themes and chords? A wonderful creature she was indeed to think of creatures such as himself and the others about him.

"Where..." What had that thought been? He'd had it a moment ago but a shush of wind had taken his attention away. Ah, that was it. "Where are we going Melody?" he asked, glancing about as he followed the vixen into the alley.

((Sorry about disrupting, but I wanted to be sure you all saw this: as there is no way I'm going to have time for this before Saturday at the earliest, feel free to keep going, and maybe assume Rina is following, obviously lost in thought, or something. I feel bad if I kept you guys held up for that long without any warning or anything...))

Rina obediently followed, glancing around as they went. She stared at the occasional bit of graffiti on walls, obviously of human origin. That was a very interesting art form, and one she had not seen before. Such interesting paint they used...Rina approached one, trying to figure what they had done, too enraptured to notice the ever present city noises, perhaps the only things that stood between her, and asking to join the tribe.

"This art the humans leave on the wall...Do you know how they do it?" Rina asked, quickly going to rejoin the group, lest she be left behind. While Sonia was kind, she was not certain of the ways of the Syndicate, and would be cautious until she better knew their tribal customs.

Sonia turned back to smile at Tristan. "We are going deeper into Syndicate territory, Tristan," she called. "My Sanguinites have a base near here. There we can rest, and you may tell them of your song. I think they will like you. Then, if you wish to take the test and attempt to become one of us, you may do so. Hylden, sweet Sanguinia, walk with him and guide him - be silent, my dear, as you do so well, and do not disturb his listening."

The green fox moved obediently to do so, ready to nudge Tristan in the right direction or guard him from danger if need be. Sonia, meanwhile, turned her attention to Rina. "You admire the human wall-painting?" she said with a chuckle. "Atticus tells me it is writing, but that he can only read about half of it. They use paint of a kind, he says, though I have never seen it done: they have little metal cans that spit it out, like a startled drinker spraying water across his comrades." That was an amusing thought. "Hm - it would be good to know what it says, I think. I still have little to no skill at reading. What of you?"

While she was genuinely interested in Rina's answer, the pale elder would not have been troubled if there were no conversation between them at all. She was entirely caught up in the wonder of seeing the vixen again. There was no exaggeration in saying that she had grown up gracefully. Every line and plane of her was smooth, sleek and healthy, and her distinctive colours were more appealing than ever. As so often happened at times like this, Sonia was in very great danger of being in love. She enjoyed that danger, that sense of not quite knowing how much to feel. Perhaps it would burn her one day, but for now she would enjoy its warmth in subtle, respectful silence.

Tristan blinked rapidly a couple of times as he began to register the meanings of the sounds. The green vixen, follow the green vixen and… He turned to the silent-pawed female as he reached a sticking point in his understanding of what had been said. Test. Best. Rest. Test. Test for what?

“Test?” he asked after some moments of silent walking, canting his head to the side slightly. He knew the meaning of the word of course but wasn’t quite sure how it ought to be applied to this situation. Test. Take a test to follow the Melody? That was how it seemed, certainly. It made sense that he would have to prove his worth but how was he to do that? Who was worthy of being in the presence of Melody? Perhaps he would find out if he walked on beside the green vixen.

A test...Yes, that was right. There was some test that those who wished to join the Sanguine Syndicate must pass, though what exactly that test entailed, Rina had not the slightest idea. Although she was fairly certain that, no matter the content of the test, she would not pass. While she might appreciate art in all of its forms, she had none of her own, and so considered herself unworthy of the tribe.

The images Sonia could conjure with mere words were amazing, and Rina envied the elder her skill with spoken words.

"Paint? I have never seen paint anything like this before." Rina glanced at the walls again, but it still did not look much like paint to her.

"No, I am afraid I cannot read it, either." She wished that she was able to read, yet that was something else she had little skill with. There was so much that she admired, yet so little she could actually do.
