Man, you'd think there would be more posts in a topic as broad as this...
Anywho. I'm an unimaginably picky snob when it comes to reading...I'll pick up nearly anything, but books that I really love and/or stick with to the end are rare. And a lot of bestseller books don't really appeal to me...maybe it has to do with the no-frills writing style that a lot of them have. I prefer flowery and exciting prose over boring and straight-to-the-point, when it comes to prose.
Right now I'm reading Eragon...I hated the movie, but a good friend of mine told me that the series is actually amazing, and the movie bungled it up horribly. It's rather good, though just a hair on the predictable side. Word is the sequel is a lot more interesting, plot-wise, though. And the third installment is coming out this September, I think.
Then there's Eva Ibbotson, an incredible fantasy-ish writer who has a real knack for inserting that can't-put-down quality in her books. Then there's "Inkheart" and "Inkspell", both amazing novels. (Okay, I read a lot of kids' books. sweatdrop ) George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four" is incredible, too--the ideas introduced in it are really mind-bending, and the book has an exceptional amount of depth.
Les Miserables...my stepmom has seen the play several times. And she has the soundtrack. I once picked up "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", but didn't get very far. Hugo is an amazing author though.
