Dhar smiled happily as she did and he was glad he was able to cheer her up if it was only for a little while. It was nicer seeing her happy, she looked prettier when she smiled as well.

"You should smile more often. It suits you!" He winked at her and let out a small chuckle.

"You are unlikely to find someone who is sorrow free but maybe someone who knows how to deal with sorrow and sadness." He shook his head while saying this so the words came out sounding a little strange.

"Sorry, these manes are a pain sometimes!" He was about to laugh as he heard her final words.

"Ivie, you will have your happy ending one day, you just have to wait for it to come along and if our meeting was in deed fate then I am glad it happened. I haven't had such nice company in a while, it seems most females I come across are grumpy old things maybe I will join you in the whole no mate thing then. That way you won't be alone and will have a friend and I won't be alone and will have a friend." He laughed. "I often wondered what it would be like to have a mate but I couldn't have one, I need to look after my mother still and it would be unfair on the female for me to split my attention so much." He laughed a little and looked up at the sky. A beautiful distraction.

"Thank you." She whispered, feeling her skin burn beneath her fur. She wriggled her forepaws and dipped her head, wishing that she wasn't suddenly so shy. "I feel nicer when I smile."

Her ears perked up at his next words and she wondered. Where on earth could she find a male who could deal with his problems? "I'll be old by the time I find a male who can do that, surely!" She laughed. "Unless you can point me in the right direction? I don't meet many lions really so the odds of meeting my male are pretty slim."

She shrugged and purred. Stepping forwards a little. She could feel the warmth emanating from his body, drawing her closer. "Then we can be friends." She replied. "Your mother is important. So important. I learned how special mothers are just recently and now I never want to let mine go." She bobbed her head. "But Dharba..." And she paused, staring deep into his eyes. "Please don't give up your life entirely. Let yourself find love just as your mother did. We only get one chance at life, so live it to your fullest." It seemed strange to be giving such good advice for a change.

Dhar smiled at her and laughed a little, she was definatly a good girl to be around, that was for sure. A good friend she would make. He couldn't help but wonder what it was his brother had done to her but he wasn't about to pry, not yet anyway.

"Well some lions can deal with problems, I mean I have problems but I deal with them, mother I look after and Fedha I don't think about and there problems solved, so simple!" He laughed again, "I am sure there are others who can cope with life!"

He smiled as she agreed to be friends and she spoke of her own mother, it seemed rare that you would find one who cared about family so much, everyone he had come across recently was either scared or grumpy!

"I also saw how love hurt my mother when her love died. That is something I guess I would rather avoid. Its my life as it has always been so why should I change it?" He smiled and laughed again, he did long for love but just continued to tell himself that he couldn't have it, another way of dealing with a problem.

She smiled at him. "Well it's a good thing I bumped into you Dharba or I might have been sad for a long long time." It was very good to have a friend. A proper friend. "You know. I don't think I've had a true friend before." She flicked her ears. "Can we be best friends?" She said it with such cubbish innocence that she almost didn't look like an adult.

"But if you asked your mother about some of the best days of her life, don't you think those would be with the times she shared with her mate?" Ivie whispered. "If I asked my mother I don't think she would say it, but then again I don't think she loved my father. Not really."

She shifted closer again. "Listen Dharba. As your new friend I really want to see you happy. Yes someday you'll die but I was taught that death isn't the end. The circle of life...the rising to the stars. We all meet again up there you know." She indicated the sky with a jerk of her head.

"Best friends? Nah we can be bestest best friends!" He chuckled a little admiring how she looked. She couldn't live her life without a mate, so many males would love to have a mate as beautiful as her.

He listened to what she said and nodded, it was true, his mother loved to think of those times when she would just sit there with Denge and the birthing of Ny and then of him and his siblings. Yeah, Ivie was right.

"You seem to have had a different education to me. From what I know, death is the end." He shrugged a little, shifting his weight about.

"You however should find a mate, I am sure lots of males would love a girl as caring and as beautiful as you. How about this then, neither of us will dismiss love and will embrace it when it finds us?" It was an odd idea of his but he thought it might work and make her happy at the same time.

"Okay!" She exclaimed, bouncing lightly on her paws. Then her ears flattened a little at his words and she shook her head vehemently. "No, no.Oh Dharba, death isn't the end. Trust me on that. It all makes sense. That's why the stars are so beautiful! They are the souls of our ancestors, gleaming up there for all eternity as one giant pride."

She smiled and nodded at his idea. "Okay, that sounds like a good plan to me." She moved forwards then and very tentatively nuzzled his shoulder.

The touch sent a jolt tingling down her spine but there was nothing, no scary illusions or stories of the future. Just fur. Just comfort.

She smiled wider.

"I can't stop smiling now!" She giggled, "my face hurts!"

Dhar nodded, "That would explain why they are so beautiful..." He chuckled again and nodded once more. "Yes, I think I would rather believe that then death being the end."

He was glad she agreed with his plan though he secretly wanted to continue avoiding any chance of falling in love, after all he never said he wouldn't avoid love!

As she touched him he just smiled and looked down at her. He saw her smile widen and he couldn't help but smile wider though if he did anymore then his mouth would be aching.

"Your face can continue to hurt if you smile like that!" He nudged her softly, she hadn't moved away from him when she touched him so he hoped touching her would be ok.

She gave a high-pitched, almost cubbish sound and as he touched her - and the touch brought no pain - a wonderful joy suffused her. "You are full of flattery! Your mother taught youhow to talk to girls." Then bounding forwards she arched down and gazed mischieviously at him.

"Come on Dharba. Try to catch me~!" To happy to care about whether contact would bring pain, she turned and darted off, young muscles strong and bold as she ran.

The wind ruffled through her short, pale fur and she threw back her head to laugh into the breeze.

Life was suddenly wonderful.

He was a little worried at the sound she made but she seemed to be ok and as she went bounding off he couldn't help but laugh.

"I will squash you if I catch you!" He shouted after her before bounding off after her, a roar emmiting from him as he started to bound after her. It had been so long since he had played with anyone it seemed like a new thing to be doing. This was great!

"You won't be able to catch me!" She called back over her shoulder as she went. She turned back just in time to see a great tree blocking her path. She gave a small cry and skidded to a halt, pushing off from the trunk to go flying off to the left.

Grass tore up from under her paws as she ran, wind biting at her as she wound in and out of the tall grass.

Her laugh rang out again and she paused to glance back, peering through the tall grass to try and find him.

"Dharba?" She called. Now she felt like an antelope! Where was he? She crouched low in the grass and waited, her heart thumping wildly.

Dhar ran after her to begin with but as she slowed down to avoid the tree he sunk down into the grass and just watched. He moved slowly and carefully towards the tree that she avoided, it would make a good look out spot.

He watched her pause and call his name, he just smiled and continued to watch for a little while before letting out a loud roar, then quickly and carefully moving in the grasses so that if she spotted him it wouldn't be in the direction of the roar.

She heard his roar and flattened herself to the ground. Her breath rasped from her throat so loudly that she was sure it was going to give her away. She held it then and listened to the thump, thump of her heart. She wanted to move but was unsure where to go.

Then slowly deciding that it would be silly to stay put she began to back up, crawling quietly through the grass.

The roar had been up ahead, so Dharba must be too, right?

Dhar was lucky he had her in sight when she started moving because for a minute or two he couldn't see her but then he saw her moving again. If she had stayed still then he probably wouldn't have seen her again, her pelt was close to the colour of the dusty green grasses and it seemed it was easy to loose her.

With his eyes on her he moved carefully but quickly towards her untill he was close enough to pounce her... as long as she didn't turn around.

Ivie paused again, briefly, and swivelled her ears around her. Nothing. She raised her head very slightly to peer between the grass. No more sounds at all!

Perhaps if she had been blessed with more senseshewould have turned around, as it was she was sure Dharba was still somewhere up ahead.

She swallowed and flattened her ears, backing up another few steps before whispering his name. It was so quiet that if Dharba hadn't been so close he probably never would have heard.

"Dharba? You...there?"

Then she fell silent. Listening intently.

One...

Two...

Three...

The grey lion leaped out of the grasses at the green female, he wanted to roar, let it all out but he knew better, if this attack would work then he needed to be quiet and not make any noise at all.
