L Y Z Z A C I O U S` DB Cherry Milkshake Riley's tail is dead? o.o Horse hair is like human hair After a while it gets dead-looking, you know, dry, ratty, etc. And after too long it starts to look less healthy, because the healthier hair is covered by the dead hair. Kind of like when humans get split ends. ^^ I get it, my bad and thanks. biggrin

-sigh- I just can't win against the elements!!! I got it looking healthy and awesome, and then we get rain. Now... lemme say this, he LOVES to roll. Do I need to say more? It's all dry and dead looking, again! and I'm at the end of my rope lol. His mane and tail are clumped in mud, dry and dead-looking.
Any suggestions?

It's alright, no need to worry.
I plan to ask someone at the tackshop when I go out.

For manes and tails (body too) - I highly suggest Premier brand Rose Oil - Moisturizes hair , deepens color, minimizes hair breakage, repels dust and stain and best of all saddles will not slip! We buy it by the gallon to use on all of our show horses. Not to mention it smells darn good too!
I've noticed that alot of the silicone based conditioners and detanglers will dry out hair, which is why we use the rose oil.

Thanks RedhairedLass, I'll try to get my hands on some and give it a try.
My horse is still shedding out -rolls eyes- for a horse with hardly any winter coat, he's taking longer to shed then the horse who looked like a fuzzy teady bear! hehe
I've been using a small bit of baby oil to try to help de-tangle it a bit. It seems to help his tail a bit, but then again we havn't had massive amounts of rain in a couple weeks. I'll give it a shot though!

Pick a day to just rough up the skin bring dry skin to the surface then take a wiry brush and flick it away.

I have quite a few that save Time AND Money on a rider. :3
- When you are done brushing, use a dry sponge and wipe them down, the sponge takes the excess dust with it, leaving your horse so shiny and smooth as if it were just soaked with show sheen. :3
- Don't have a squeegee? Here's an easy solution to help dry your horse quickly if you don't have one or a hair dryer on hand. :3 First, use a hard or dandy brush and brush Against the hair after the horse is wet. Once all the hair is going the opposite way, let it stay like that for about 5 mins, and then brush it back. It should be moderately dry by now, so now if there is excess water left, use the opposite side of your metal shedding brush. If you have a metal shedding brush that has one side that is just metal and has no 'teeth', use that like a squeegee to wipe away excess water. :3 It saves time.
- Baby Oil is a Natural Show Sheen, and is cheaper to buy.
- Want your little logo on your horses but to stay? Use some hair gel! It'll keep it in place until you wash it off. :3
- If your horse won't shed fast, (I know the issue, Penny just got her first winter coat during the winter, and she didn't stop shedding till about May. xD ) buy a Groomers Stone. They help loosen old hair and skin and remove it. Or, buy a metal shedding brush with one side that has teeth on it. Brushing often even twice a day will help loosen all that excess hair and make your horse a horse again. :3
- For Mud removal on a tail / mane , work at it like you would with Burrs. old the mud clump, and remove the hairs. If worst comes to worst, WET the tail, and work it out. It's a slow process, but it works.
- For Body mud removal, it's easier if it's dry. Work at it with a metal shedding brush, dandy brush, hard brush, and work it short, hard strokes to remove the mud. Lord knows there is a horse in there somewhere. On their hooves, use a small hoof brush, and work at it. There is a horse in there. Just keep at it and wet the mud on certain spots to help loosen it up some.
