What's wrong with lust again? I forget.

It's typically considered one of the seven deadly sins. But the two problems with it I've always heard are that lust often leads to fornication, which is sinful because you should basically be saving yourself for you spouse. Also, sin is anything that gets in the way with your relationship with God. God wants your focus to be on Him, not on how much you want to sex that hot guy or chick.

Lust is where you want to use the other person for your own selfish desires- that's exploitation and is wrong on a few levels. The intercourse inside of a marriage- the kind that waits for the wedding ring- is one that is self-giving and not self-serving. What are the reasons people don't wait? I want to have sex now. That's selfish. Even if both partners are thinking the same way it's still selfish and it's still exploitation. By waiting you're saying that you want to wait until there is no chance you will be separated and that you will belong to each other and only each other.

Lust gives this no regard and wants what it wants right then and there. It doesn't want to wait. It is the selfish id that needs to be overcome.

When you wait, then you're controlling your lust, rather than your lust controlling you, and it therefore discontinues to be lust. The same feeling still exists inside of a marriage because it's kinda necessary to be sexually attracted to your spouse, but those are the only grounds on which God allows inetercourse.

Paul says if you can't keep your lust under control, then get married, and then it won't be an issue. Then at least your lust won't be accompanied by fornication. -shrug-

I have a friend who is homosexual. He is also a Christian. Most people assume that you cannot be both. Although he is homosexual, he does not pursue men because he knows it is a sin. He goes to a Christian college where a fair amount of the student body knows now that he is homosexual. He chooses to live off-campus rather than with the men in the dorms, though the dorm guys would all welcome him in an instant. He realizes that homosexual desires are no more of a sin than heterosexual desires. He looks at it as God calling him to be celebate, nothing more. He's told me before that he hopes that one day, he'll fall for a girl and get married, cuz he's not a huge fan of staying a virgin his whole life, but that if he doesn't, he is content to follow God's guidance. Just thought he set a great example.

Wait a minute..if the OT rules still apply, does that mean I can't eat shellfish?

Leviticus 11:9-12

9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

Deuteronomy 14:9-10

9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.

But I can own slaves?
Leviticus 25:44-45
Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.

But shaving is a no-no..
Leviticus 19:27
Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.

Those laws are in the same book.

They apply, but in a different way. Following them doesn't require you do not eat shellfish or shave (both of which were very common sense rules, considering God told them this when they were wandering around in the desert). Following these laws is done by following Jesus who has already fulfilled them.

The laws about shaving, food, and slaves refer to very cultural aspects of the OT law, and are not necessarily applicable today, they were mostly used to set the jews apart from their neighbors, or had other uses, like the food laws had more to do with how healthy the food was for man to eat, those foods are actually still fairly unhealthy for people to eat, but we have better ways of preparing the food now. The reason they followed so many laws was to make them different from their neighbors which live in sin.

Edit: about the slaves, God had very different rules about how to treat a slave than the old American view of slavery. A person was supposed to treat their slave with respect and to take care of their slave.

Fornication is a nicer way of saying getting freaky.
    Getting your freak on.
    Getting busy.
    Or having sex. surprised

Homosexual men seem to have no trouble seeing as how their prostates are conveniently and /naturally/ placed. Nor do homosexual women have trouble, as God did give us all tongues. If God hates it so much, he should do away with fingers, tongues, and prostates.
If God hates unnatural sex, he should also do away with S&M. Now there's something even heterosexual couples practice. Intercourse was not meant to incorporate whips and handcuffs and pain. Yet we invented them, didn't we? Heck, we even invented the missionary style of intercourse. That's unnatural too!
surprised
And putting lickable chocolate on your partner.
And performing oral.
Geeze.

Enough of all this unnaturalness! I say we all halt intercourse altogether if it's a sin. We should all learn how to clone ourselves.
Then.
Maybe.
God would be a happy fellow.

[/end ridiculous rant]

Sorry, I HAD to quote this. It made me rofl

Anyhow, I know that most people in this guild have already heard my stand on homosexuality and everything that goes along with it. I don't believe it's a sin to love. There are too many passages in the Bible exalting it, praising it, and telling you to do it. I don't believe that God would spend so much time getting love into his handbook for humanity and then limit it to a certain group. Homosexual love can be as pure and wonderful as heterosexual love. I don't do a double standard. If a straight couple is out of line, I'll tell them just as soon as I'd tell a gay couple. The only difference is that I won't tell the gay couple that they're going to hell for falling in love with someone of the same gender.

Well, to me personally, Homosexuality is wrong. God created man and women to be together in Genesis. God destroyed Sodom and Gamorah because they were doing sexual acts with people of the same gender. I don't know if God abandoned these rules after Jesus or not, I don't think it ever says in the NT, but I still believe in them. It just seems wrong to me that the world just abandoned them, when Jesus never made it clear.

My personal theory on this has always been that God needed a strong, healthy, numerous people. The food he told them not to eat are things that people generally have strong allergies to, can cause disease if not cooked right and so on and so forth. The same thing with a**l sex... people didn't wash as well back then. Diseases live there. And you can't have a numerous people if part of that already small population is with someone they can't have babies with. domokun Ah well. Another personal theory is that you believe what you believe, and I believe what I believe, and no arguing between the two will change an ingrained opinion. I'm content to wait until the end and let God tell us what He meant. heart
