Solo Roleplay:

His cell phone had died.

It was an inconvenience that Len had never had to experience. Every night, back in his suite he had dutifully put the phone in its charger, preparing it for the next day so that he could stay in constant contact with his mother, father, his various nannies and tutors and teachers who would need him at a moment's notice.

But when he had tried to call his parents in the small room Ms. Floros had given him for the night, so he could possibly rent out a hotel room for the week or so that he expected the game to last, he had found the small, new, sleek phone...dead. It just would not turn on.

Confused, he placed the dead phone on the small wooden box that was beside the cot he was to sleep in. Maybe the battery would recharge if he left it off...but Len could have sworn that it was almost at a full charge when he left.

Shrugging it off, he climbed into the cot and took out the talisman in his pocket. Len traced the ancient, sea-worn and unfamiliar letters with his slightly sharpened fingernails as the sun faded into night.

He didn't recognize any of it--just a faint, suppressed recollection and internal shiver as he felt the tentacles of the alien face. He felt cold.

No. It wasn't just the thought of the corpse-like breath that was making the room cold. The heat had been turned down, dramatically. He didn't know much about plants, but he was sure by the warm and humid air within the shop that Ms. Floros liked to keep it warm for her plants.

He didn't notice the same erethreal green glow that had invaded Seasons earlier in the day; he had mostly blocked the traumatic experience from his mind.

Sleep, he heard a familiar voice, deep and gutteral and gravelly, whisper in his ear.

Len felt his eyes suddenly get heavy, like two huge weights were pulling them down. He felt hilmself falling, falling, falling...

He was in a plain, vast and ancient and cold. The sky was orange and pink from the sun, so far away and setting behind angry and dark mountains that were clawing at the clouds.

Len shivered. It felt so...real.

"Lennon." The voice, whispering, now definitely behind him.

He turned around, and caught a glimpse of something huge, mountainous, beyond his imagination before there was a shimmer, like heat above pavement, and the thing vanished. In its place was a man, still tall, but no longer the mountain Len thought he saw.

He was very dark, as if he had spent his entire life in the deserts outside the city (or hiding in the shadows), almost the color of pavement, and dressed in a crisp, grey business suit.

"Hello, Lennon." There were two voices: one deep and commanding, the other a slow whisper that he had been hearing since he entered the shop.

The man opened his eyes. They were glowing green, and had no pupils.

"Who...?" Len began, trying to find his voice. "Are you..."

"Yes. I am Cthulhu, the Dreamer of R'lyeh." The man smiled. His teeth were pointed and flat, like a wall. Len couldn't help but think there was something behind them, something clawing to get out. "I am your...guide."

"Guide?" Len asked. He shivered and put his newly-clawed hands under his armpits.

"Yes." The dreamer smiled again. "Like the flower goddess told you."

"Mrs. Floros?"

"Yes." It was the same smile, same bemused hiss.

Len shivered again. "So...what is the game that I'm playing?"

"We," the man said shortly, the smile fading slightly from his dark face. "We are the ones playing the game, you and I. We're a team, Lennon. A team."

The man stepped forward and bent down on one knee so that the two were at eye level. Len felt as if he couldn't move, even if he tried...almost as if here, on this cold plain, he was at the will of this dreamer.

"Teams do not disapoint each other, Lennon." The smile was gone. The green eyes stared seriously into the boy's blue ones. "I will not disapoint you, as long as you do not disapoint me."

The man's face was right in front of Len's own.

"You will not disapoint me, will you, Lennon."

The man's hands were on his small, slight shoulders now, grasping them tightly, as if they were in a vise. Len felt like he was in a trap that was waiting to snap shut and grab him in its metal teeth.

He paused, taking in the cool air. "No."

The smile returned. "Excellent!" The dreamer exclaimed, as if he were feinging excitement. "Let me tell you the rules."

He let go of Len's shoulders and swung his arms around the plain. "This," the two voices began in unison, "is the Plain of Leng. You are dreaming of it."

"Yeah," Len said, looking across the cold stony ground to some old ruins, strangely shaped and half-buried in the snow.

"You've seen this place before." Again, not a question.

"Yeah."

"You are here in spirit only." The dreamer smiled wider, and walked around. "I, however...am here in body. I am in complete control here, Lennon. Dreams are my domain. I am the Dreamer, after all." He laughed slightly, as if it were all some big joke. Suddenly, the air around him shimmered, and Len caught a slight glimpse of something foul and enormous before the air shimmered again and a clone of Len appeared before him.

"I can manipulate them." There were three voices now: the deep voice, the whisper, and his own.

The air shimmered again, and the man returned. "You can have these powers, as well...in time. My power will grow in you over time."

The man had walked a full circle. "Until then," the two voices said, excited, "you must build up your strength. Find information. This may take a long time, Lennon, a very long time, but I need you to find the others." The smile had faded again. "We must win, Lennon. Do not disapoint me."

"Wait..." Len was confused now. "How long? I kind of assumed that this would be only a week..."

The man smiled and broke out into unnatural laughter. "Oh, no, Lennon. This will be much longer."

"But..." the frightened boy began again, stuttered slightly. "...but where will I stay? Ms. Floros said I can only stay the night..."

More smiling. "In the lower reaches of Middling, there is a small house that I arranged for you to take."

Len looked up nervously.

"You already know where it is."

He did.

"Now, Lennon, I must go. But enjoy your dreams."

The man started to shimmer and fade into the cold, whatever terrible beast hidden simmering behind it screeching back to whatever vault it came from.

Remember, Lennon, the whispering voice, back in his mind, said, do not disapoint me.

Solo Roleplay:

Darkness, gripping him in all directions, the heavy stone shackles holding him down on the snowy earth, his face spazzing.

"Again."

The elder god pushed his presence into the young boy's mind, watching as he put up his defenses again. Internally, the Dreamer smiled. He may be a weakling, but he was a fighter.

The boy began to scream.

The Dreamer hadn't taken a human form this time--no, he was not sparing the child at all. Lennon was weak. He had opportunity. He had foolishly wasted it. Now he must learn from his mistakes.

He pulled his mind out, giving the boy a reprieve of horror. He breathed heavily.

The Dreamer looked over the plains of Leng, towards the monestary on the far end of the plateau. The boy was soft. He needed to be strengthened.

"Again," he said, and the insanity started again.

Cthulhu puts his work to Len in the night to spare the mental damage of watching oneself age years in seconds, but it is hardly pleasant. His limbs elongate, lean muscle rippling across his body in painful spurts, and as others before him, he develops to a young man of his later teens.

However, Cthulhu would not simply allow Len to take this gift without bearing the marks of the Dreamer himself, so his changes don't end there. His claws thicken, proving to be rather sharp, and an incessant itch brings forth a thin webbing between his fingers, stained a sickly green. As if someone had begun pulling at his ears, they stretch out and elongate, though it is hardly noticable in comparison to the muscle spasms of his upper lip. First, his four original tentacles writhe as they stretch and contort, becoming longer and more prominent with each passing moment. Then, two more tentacles burst forth from the skin of his upper lips, the same green of the others and the same size as the others had been before.

The final change is perhaps the most painful, and it starts with an itching on Len's back, the skin between his shoulderblades becoming slick and green. Muscle upon muscle gathers, then with surging force spread out, bone forming from tissues and skin stretching out to impossibly thin lengths, barely encompassing the wings now upon Len's back. Slowly, the skin heals over, but this too is a painful process that occurs for most of the day's change. Afterwards, he is left with nothing more than an empty promise that perhaps, one day, he will be able to fly with what are now only problems.
