its waht i like to call....energy lumps ( :p ) it is part of the evolution as i would suspect which later grows into a arm and wings and then a full body casing :/
so they arent compact drives in sakuya/eureka just their energy flowing through them as they grow

(spoilers for the video game)
in the eureka seven PS2 game called eureka seven: the new wave. the main character, Sumner, is able to pilot the Nirvash in the very end before he gives it to holland. at first he is unable to get it to move, but when his 'girlfriend' is in trouble inside of his own mech, trying to fend off the military, and gets into trouble he is able through what i assume is his emotions to start the nirvash up and get it to work. this in part shows that the nirvash is more intune to the pilots emotions and reacts to them. it is my theory that the reason eureka had her headaches. was the fact that she had been the nirvash's pilot for a long time and they had become somewhat connected. so when Renton first started piloting the nirvash eureka felt somewhat disconnected with the nirvash and began to develop headaches but once she and renton began to get close and pilot the nirvash together the headaches went away. eureka has no need for the compac device because it is used as a bridge between "Humans" and the LFO's eureka is more in tune with the LFO's and can pilot them without one.
that is my theory behind why she had her headaches, and about the nirvash. feel free to poke holes in it all you want. i probably overlooked quite a few things.

In episode 37 norb and Dr.Bear both go over the compac drive and its meaning. In the short terms from the episode the compac is a connection of the body of the planet and the Soul of the planet. Eureka Also say's in the episode that she does not know how the compac effects her. There for Coralian's are not compact dirves, they are more on the level of body of the LFO's which is why the can communicate with and LFO without a compac.
