Hear, hear, my friends...Long ago, in a land long gone, is a story of disaster and intrigue and corruption... Magic was widespread in Maeldyn. Anyone could use it. As a result, many evils were loosed upon the land through the folly of mages and the greed of many. Thus, eight of the most powerful spellcasters of the land contacted each other, hoping to form an object so powerful that it would bind all the magic of the land inside it.
The Creation took years and years. Through painstaking effort, each spellcaster, who excelled in a particular element - except the one spellcaster who was skilled in all elements - created a portion of this powerful item. Years and years of hard work finally led to the Jrianr Jewel. This beautiful, rainbow-coloured jewel was about as large as a clenched fist, and beautifully spherical. During that second of Creation, all the magic in Maeldyn inverted itself and bounded back in an opposite fashion onto the spellcaster before zipping into the Jewel. This, obviously caused tremendous chaos and destruction, and it took yet another few years to calm all this and explain what had happened. Over the course of several years, many attempts of thievery were made, as the Jrianr Jewel would allow the user to become pretty much invincible.
The spellcasters who had created this wonderful item were always on guard, always watching the Jrianr to detect any signs of thievery. They warded off many potential dangers to the Jewel - and thus to Maeldyn - during a span of a few years.
Then came the Destruction. The spellcasters let their guard down one night, believing they had foiled enough attempts to make the lesson obvious - it was impossible to steal the Jrianr. However, that one night, as fate would have it, a band of thieves snuck into the building where the Jrianr was hidden. Seven of them went to the spellcasters' rooms to kill them silently, while the last was bid to go and take the Jewel. Little did they know one of the spellcasters was still alive, and the thieves had missed him. As the eight thieves were coming out of the building, chuckling at their good fortune, one inadvertedly stepped on the foot of the last spellcaster, who was supposed to be on guard outside the building but had been sleeping.
With a cry of vengeance and anger, the mage stood, blazing with power drawn from the Jrianr. He lashed out with more energy than any man had ever held, unleashing bolts of all elements at the thieves. Seven of the thieves were killed, but the one that was holding the Jrianr was defended by its powerful magics and retaliated with a blast of pure force. Being a pure novice at using magic, the thief did not know that he had drawn on more magic than his spirit could hold, and had, instead of shooting a concentrated blast only at the mage, exploded with a nova of elemental energy. In an instant, the Jrianr cracked into seven Shards, each Shard with its own elemental power. The thief's body burst apart in an explosion of magic, the mage's body disintegrated, and the magic that had long been bound inside the Jrianr was let free, but not entirely like before.
This time, the magic selected random people, giving them the ability to sense magic and utilize it. It was slightly more controlled, and while there was still chaos and disaster across the land from the time of the Destruction, extending to prosecution and wide-spread hate of magic users, it was considerably less than before the Creation, and it eventually settled.
Once Maeldyn settled down, magic users were again tolerated and guilds were formed to stop chaos and destruction like before. Although everyone could not use magic like before, most could, and so there were formed seven guilds that had to do with magic users and another one with those that couldn't use magic. Corruption was still in Maeldyn, a part of its history and a part of how it is now, but still now Maeldyn is settled.
And thus the story continues on. Tension seems to have grown in Maeldyn, with the creation of the guild system, and there is plotting and power struggles, but for the most part Maeldyn is calm. Now venture with us to the underground Maeldyn of power and intrigue, and lose yourself in the magic...
