Count Omega I FIND IT A SLAP IN THE FACE. IT'S JUST FAR TOO CONVIENT THAT OUT OF ALL 42 EXISTING NOVELS THE WEE FREE MEN WAS CHOSEN TO BE MADE INTO A MOVIE. THEY'RE MERELY TRYING TO NOT PUT DEATH AS A CHARACTER IN A MOVIE AND THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN ACCOMPLISH THIS AND NOT OVERLY ANGER THE DISCWORLD FANBASE OR TERRY PRACHETT IS BY DOING THE WEE FREE MEN, THE ONLY NOVEL LACKING EVEN A CAMEO OF DEATH. Hogfather was recently adapted in live-action. I've seen a few stills, and Death looked pretty fantastic.

You can see the whole Hogfather film on youtube.com but you have to watch it in 10 minute segments.

NannyOgg Count Omega THAT SCENE WAS PRICELESS! IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES FROM ARMY OF DARKNESS. Dude, you should read If Chins Could Kill. It's Bruce's autobiography, in which he also details Sam's perverse joy in making him suffer. The blood on Ash in "Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead II"? All his, due to gleeful encouragement by the director to self-maim. I believe also gleeful encouragement to others not to worry about hurting Bruce either. That's where he got his scar. Good times, man, good times. I'm sooo finding that book.

They're not as bad with censoring certain elements in a Post-911 world.

It's mostly just the fact Death is a main theme and being in Discworld.I guess that's one possible reading of the Discworld main cycle, but not one I agree with. Really, I don't think that has anything to do with it. I really think that it simply boils down to the fact that Wee Free Men lends itself best to a film. The plot is tidier than the main cycle of Discworld books, it's not quite as childish as The Amazing Maurice, and it's not already a beautifully illustrated picture book, like the Last Hero. It also leaves room for evolution into a trilogy, if it proves popular enough. Also, it doesn't leans as heavily on other works as, say, Maskerade, Soul Music and Nightwatch do.

wee free men has a better chance of reaching a younger audience and since all marketing is basically geared towards the 13-24 demographic you get said choice of book to movie.
sadly most north american teens, hell even people in their early 20's, have a hard time understanding the greatness that is dry british wit. i remember when i was a teen i knew at least 2 dozen people who would understand a monty python reference.. now, i'd say 2-3 people.. TOPS!.
look at how they ruined hitchhikers guide when they made it a movie. they took out the entire humour of zaphods two heads (including the beeblebrox gambit for gods sake).
but then i again, i repeat, its all about pandering to the american youth these days

Noone else in high school knew who Wodehouse was, or Fforde, or even Adams. gonk Although I have to say, I know quite a lot of Python fans. And not the sort you'd expect, either.. Still, if they turn it into another h2g2, I'm going to cry. It was so disappointing!

NannyOgg I still say it's a good thing. This is the first interest in *any* Discworld movie that I've seen from Big Hollywood, and if this one gets a good reception others are sure to follow. And since there are only 3 Tiffany books, they'll have to look at his more adult subject matter after a maximum of three movies...especially if it proves to be an all-ages hit like "Pirates of the Caribbean", which shocked the crap out of pretty much all movie bigwigs everywhere. Also keep in mind that violence and Scottish accents have been proven hitmakers in America, land of the lowest common denominator. Not to mention, I think the happy-violence angle was probably a big selling point with Mr. Raimi, who I am hoping to Io casts his brother Ted as Daft Wullie. If it helps at all, I suspect the next character to get some Hollywood lovin' would be Rincewind. Who *wouldn't* want to see a Summer movie featuring Rincewind getting terrorized by everything and everyone? When you mentioned Ted, I gasped and said loudly "That would be amazing!" Now all we need is Bruce and Lucy and it will be even better. (Not sure how good any of them are at Scottish accents, but still. Wouldn't it be great?)
