"Thank you for the kind words," Joseph said, thinking 'I sound like I'm holding a funeral!' "I only hope I can do that... that's what I was doing at the fountain this morning. I figured that if nothing happened I would just sit there and read until I could check into the resort. After that, I would keep reading... I've heard long exposure to scripture can help spirituality. I wish I were good enough at art to express how I feel in image... but I just have a very paltry sketchbook, nothing worth looking at."
Then he thought of Glaucus' webbed hand. "So... what do you think will happen with the... you know..." He nodded his head toward where the glove now hid what Glaucus had since only showed him.

“That… I honestly don’t know. If I had answers I would tell you, but I can’t think of any reason why your insides would be affected first. Unless… Well we figured that each person who … have had that occur…so far had some sort of affiliation with the animal.”
Glaucus lowered his voice on the last sentence, when he continued he was nearly whispering, “One of our group loves wolves, and so far his… stages… have corresponded to that. And so far that seems to be the case for 3 out of the 5 of us, if you are… you know… then that’ll make 3/6.”

Joseph would certainly like to think that nothing was happening to him... if so, however, he could not think of any specific animal with which he would have an great connection... he didn't even like them that much, so he couldn't think of anything... He really didn't want to think about transforming, either - he had read the Metamorphoses and did not like the prospect.
He quickly realized that he couldn't express this hope of nothing happening, though, for fear of alienating Glaucus. Again, he was at a loss for words...
"Well, I can't think of any animal with which I'd have a connection... what do you think yours is, by the way? If you don't mind my asking..."

AJ signed, scanning the room, hoping to maybe find a free table somewhere to sit at while waiting for his food. He was about to give up and resigned himself to standing to wait, and perhaps heading home to eat, when he thought he heard something that caught his attention.
"affected.... animal... connection..."
It sent a chill down his spin and he turned to try and find its source. This was no simple task, as he couldn't tell what direction any sound came from now that he didn't have ears to focus sound, and the headband muffling what he could hear. He eventually decided it had come from a table where two guys sat in conversation. One of which was in a somewhat peculiar outfit for the weather.
He took a deep breath and approached the table. "Erm, excuse me, do you mind if I sit here while I wait for my order?" He asked politely, feeling somewhat at ease at just the thought of being around some one who might... have some insight.

“I don’t have an animal per say. Chris said I was a ‘poster boy’ for …” He should just say it, it wasn’t going to kill him. He lowered his voice phenomenally again, “Merfolk-”
Then something unthinkable at that moment happened. Glaucus was interrupted by another person, which put his very existence in jeopardy. He was a slightly older guy, with brown hair and a headband, and he sat down next to Joseph. Glaucus didn’t feel comfortable in anyway shape or form now that someone else had sat down.
Not wanting to alienate this new person or possibly shift any suspicion on to himself then necessary, he reluctantly said “Nope I don’t mind at all. Hello, My name’s Glaucus.”

"Thank you," AJ said, sitting down across from the guy wrapped up. He got the distinct impression he had interrupted something important, and probably wasn't all that welcome. At the same time, he felt he needed to shut out his modest for the time being and get some real information about what was in store for him.
"My name's AJ," he began, "I'm from outside of town, in the woods."
He offered his hand, remember being trained by his mother to make a good impression. He felt like he was in need of one.

Did he hear Glaucus correctly? Mer- folk? As in merpeople? Hmm, that was not what he had expected... it was certainly curious, to say the least. Why'd he whisper it, anyway?
But the reverie was interrupted when someone sat down next to him. Glaucus introduced himself, and Joseph, though a touch mentally off-kilter from being jarred out of thought, did the same, smiling at the newcomer: "Yeah, it's fine; we weren't reserving the seat. By the way, I'm Joseph."

Glaucus gulped hard… he was in the same position again. But as Glaucus looked him over he noticed something. The man had a headband and peculiarly low point on his head, it covers his ears, ears that gave no indentation or contour of their existence.
“Oh the pizza is done! Excuse me!” Glaucus left in a rush. “Joseph want to help me with it?” He said with an urgent hand motion. He waited for Joseph to get over to the line where he could convey his findings immediately him.

AJ found himself alone at the table, trying to smile a little at the irony of the reversal.
"I'll hold on to it for you guys," he called after them as the left.
He slumped his cheek into his palm, letting his wandering thoughts take over. Weather he was right about this one, weather he had heard the right people, or even heard what he had thought her had heard. Among these thoughts was the nagging suspision that he had seen Glaucus' eyes light up just before he left.

Joseph stood up to help Glaucus with the pizzas, but he detected something in Glaucus' demeanor that made him think there was another reason he wanted to get out of earshot... of the guy who had just sat down, he supposed. It was a look he had seen once before: the look of mild panic that Glaucus had shown at Joseph's questioning earlier in the day.
"Sure!" he said, following Glaucus away from the table and towards the counter.

“Normally I don’t like to pry at peoples features, but I can’t help but notice something about that guy. Have you ever seen headband that low so it could cover one’s ears? If I’m not mistaken, I don’t think I saw any ears at all. I saw no contours of his ears or impressions. I know this is a stretch… But do you think he could be changing as well?” Glaucus asked as the Pizza man rang up and delivered the two pizzas.

Joseph stole a glance at the man who had sat next to them, trying to ascertain what Glaucus had seen. He couldn't quite tell, but the headband was suspiciously low - it was almost like a trucker actually pulling his hat down all the way instead of letting it nearly float on top of his head. I was strange, certainly...
"I'm not sure... you're more experienced with such things," Joseph said. "Should we ... ask? I mean, at the worst he'd get offended and leave the table. At most... well, you'd add a number 7."

“I don’t know, but I do think it was strange how he came to our table, the man over is sitting alone. Do you think he might have heard something?” Glaucus asked nervously.
“Well I guess… I’ll ask him.” He said finally.

"Perhaps he heard us talking... but yes, that sounds like a good idea."
'Oh my goodness,' thought Joseph. 'I know he mentioned there being more, but... how widespread is this? What's causing it? ... and am I affected or not... ?'

“Alright” Glaucus walked with his pizza back to the table. He sat down in the seat he previously claimed and tried to think of the best way to ask his question.
“AJ, how long have you been in the Cape Fear area?” Glaucus asked as his first test, his next would be either, ‘where are you staying?’ or ‘has anything weird happened lately to you.’
