That was one aspect where Khima and Gzifa differed. Once Khima first learned of something, he rarely questioned it further. It just didn't occur to him. Though once someone posed the questions to him, like she had done, it was then he became curious. His own questions were almost non-existent.
"Um, um..." Khima stammered, trying to think up a way to distract the other from the noise. This was hard! "It'll be over soon, storms never last long." He repeated, unable to come up with another way to calm her fears. He honestly had no idea how long the storm would last, but it sounded good, didn't it?
As the second bout of thunder boomed and sent Gzifa trembling behind him, Khima continued to stand firm, looking crossly at the violent sky that was visible through the cave entrance. "I would have a few choice words to say to the Sky God for causing such a racket!"
It was a good thing that Gzifa kept the fact that what Khima had said was intensifying her fear. It would've made him feel horribly guilty.

Any words seemingly went unheard by Gzifa. It wasn't until the thunder faded and the rain began to lighten that she revealed that a wrong accusation. "Did you mean that?" prodded the wild dog, back to her usual self. "That you would stand up to a God?"
That would take one brave creature. She had a lot of questions, sure, but she wouldn't even think of getting loud with one!

Khima remained silent until the storm finally began to calm, which came as a much needed relief to the wild dog. Visibly relaxing, he turned towards Gzifa just as she voiced her question. "Of course I did! I didn't like seeing you that scared. Just because the Sky God is a God doesn't mean he can just make scary storms whenever he wants. Someone's got to stand up to him, ya know?"
Earlier, Khima would have likely said that the Sky God was allowed to do whatever he wanted, considering he was a God and all that jazz. But after seeing how frightened Gzifa had been of the storm, his opinion had changed. There should be restrictions to what Gods could do!

"You're so brave!" Gzifa gawked, awed. If he had been lying, she'd never know unless such a God soared down right now to confront them. In rare instances, she didn't question things further. He sounded convincing enough.
The rain was stopping, and for the first time a certain wild dog regretted it. "I don't want you to vanish," she voiced as the last raindrops fell. "I get tired of only seeing my brothers and sisters all the time! What if we never get lost in the same place again?"

Khima couldn't prevent himself from allowing his body to stand straighter and his chest to puff out. He had never thought of himself as a brave wild dog, but it did make him rather proud to hear it being said. "Thank you! Yeah, just let him try to scare you again!" Because of Gzifa's compliment, Khima felt like he really could take on the Sky God. Or any God, for that matter.
His pink eyes moving to the cave entrance, there was a mixture of happiness and sadness once he realized the storm was really over. For one, it meant that Gzifa wouldn't be scared anymore. But on the other paw, it also meant that soon he would have to try and find his way home again and that meant leaving the company of his newfound friend.
Gzifa seemed to share his opinion. For a few moments, Khima was silent, his face holding an odd expression that meant he was thinking about something - hard. "I'm not going to vanish, I promise," Khima began, something of a plan forming in his mind. "We're almost adults, surely our families would allow us to see each other. We just have to figure out a way." Again, Khima's features were formed into the odd expression.

"My mother wouldn't mind any," Gzifa said, tone both thoughtful and confident. If she told Mama she had a new friend, she would let her visit him! Most of her family didn't seem to worry as much about her wandering now that she was older. Maybe they were and she just didn't notice...
Then she actually thought about it. Both her parents might not be keen about the idea of her venturing around like that, after all. Not so far away. She wasn't all that old (thankfully), either. Gzifa frowned.
"I think I might have an idea!" she squeaked. "Meet me back here tomorrow, okay? Make sure you remember the way!" Without another word, she brushed past him out of the cave and bounded off.
