Jadesri Cherry Milkshake Jadesri Aqua_Lily My horse Lily has been spooking more lately. She will spook at anything. I am a little worried that she is starting to be to much for me. When I ride it isn't much fun anymore. I am wondering if I should start looking for a new horse to ride. What do you think I should do? If you have a trainer, you could also take this issue to them, if possible. I know several people who had horses that developed issues like spooking, which with evaluation, and desensitizing and/or retraining on the horse's/rider's part, many horse-rider pairs worked out their issues. There are also plenty of books out there which might have some useful information...good luck! And if safety is threatened, as everyone else has suggested, maybe hold off riding for a bit, and get a good gameplan in mind first. Sometimes the biggest problems will have the simplest solutions, and trainers and more experienced horsepeople will have advice. Really? dang and I wish her lots of luck too, how are you Jade? Welcome back, haven't seen you here for a long time, how's riding for you? Guess what? I'm the new owner in this Guild. biggrin Hey Cherry ^_^ Congrats on being the new owner! Hope things run smoothly for ya. Yeah, I've been busy with finishing college and such, so life is hectic right now >_< I hope to get in a few more posts than I have been, ha ha, we will see how that goes. Take care!Hey Jade thanks! and aw College and I hope you return again my friend and haha thank you take care and goodluck!^^

But not for a while untill we decide when Lily finally gets to old. She is 27 but acts like a five year old. If she keeps spooking over the next couple of months then I will start looking for a new horse to ride.

Even though you don't use a crop, you should consider using one. There will be times when I rider needs to back up their aids by giving a stronger aid (spurs, whip), and if you don't have anything, you can't reenforce your aids. Some spooky horses benefit from a light tap behind the leg or on the shoulder when you feel that they are unsure of a situation. It's just a stronger aid. Using the reins can work, but you can't use your reins to reenforce a leg aid unless they are quite long and you have good aim. Be sure you are keeping your hands (thus, bit) still when you apply the rein slap. wink

But she is so senstive I'm a little worried that she would do somthing weird or might bolt when I gave her a rein slap. At a light kick she would go pretty fast.

If she is that kind of horse (which is rather dangerous, as horses need to be able to accept an artificial aid quietly), ask your trainer to get on her. Ask her to use a whip/bat to see how your horse reacts. If your horse violently reacts to a gentle tap with the whip, I would highly consider selling her, or putting her with a good, humane trainer for more serious schooling. You don't have to use a long dressage/schooling whip with her (even though that is best, since you can tap behind your legs and without moving your hand), but you can buy on of those short jump bats to use on her shoulder.

I tend to use the long dressage whips to tap their shoulders instead of behind my legs. It doesn't actually tell them to go faster, so much as say 'hey! pay attention, listen to me, and do your job!' 3nodding
