"You've never heard of them?" she asked rhetorically, shocked at his question. "I thought everyone knew about them... well I've never met an Angel Guardian myself, but everyone says they protect the gods and protect people. They're really strong and use their strength to protect everything. I've heard stories about things they've done from the bards, but that's pretty much the basics I guess."

Ontaros nods "I see, so you would use that knowledge and wisdom I would pass on to protect then? I beleive I can agree to such terms." With a smile he holds out a firm hand to her, looking straight into her eyes.

Kalm grinned as she took his offered hand, unable to believe her luck. Someone who would train her! "I promise I will, Ontaros. What do I need to do first?"

Ontaros takes her hand firmly and shakes it, then looks to the sky at her question. Without looking back to her, he responds. "There are two things I want from you. You can either tell me a little about yourself, or you can show me what skills you already have so I know what to build on from there. Your choice." When he finishes he looks back to her, his head tilted slightly to the side.

The girl thought his question over for a long moment before replying. "Well, the weapon I've practiced the most with is my bow. I can shoot better than anyone else in my village, and I've been practicing lately at shooting things blindfolded. I haven't hit anything yet, but from reading the tracks I was only a span away from hitting a hare once.
"Other than that, I have two long daggers I fight with. My father taught me to use them when I was young, but that was basic hunting and survival skills. Later there was a traveling gypsy woman who could sword-dance and throw daggers and she showed me some moves while she was in town, but everything else I've taught myself.
"As for my other skills, I was followed you from the stream, so you can judge my hiding and tracking skills for yourself. I prefer to trail my targets from treetop, but I can track from the ground as well. I can read footprints and other signs fairly well, and I am always the person Henry, the tavern master, refers travelers to when they need a guide through the forest.
"Umm... that's all I can think of. Is there anything you'd like to know or want me to show you?" She chewed on her lower lip, hoping she hadn't forgotten anything.

Ontaros listens to Kalms story and then thinks a moment before replying. "So you have a reasonable grasp of basic fighting and a basic grasp of exotic fighting.... In close quarter combat, what do you reach for first?"

"Well, I'm not sure. The two rules I was taught was that first you were supposed to find your own center and balance yourself in it, then you were supposed to watch your opponent and find a way to take them out of their center, knock them off balance." Her expression paled as she realized she may be failing some important test. "I'm really sorry, I just haven't had a lot of formal training."

Ontaros laughs softly, shaking his head. "There's no right answer, I'm asking your preferance Dear." He pauses a moment before putting a hand on her shoulder. "Try relaxing. I've agreed to train you and I do not punish on trivial things. My first instinct is always for a polearm if I'm being charged or I have a distance between my opponent and I, or a curved blade if I have no such luxury."

"Oh, I see..." she began, visibly relieved. "In that case, I generally prefer my daggers in close combat. They have a slight curve to the blade," she said, pulling out one of the pair and showing it to him, "and I like holding them in a reverse grip so I can move more fluidly. I can also fight barehanded, but I prefer not to if I have a choice."

Ontaros holds up both fists "Well, if nothing else, you atleast know that these will be the last things taken from you in a fight. It's always good to know how to use them." He takes a look over the weapon she produced and nods. "Very good choice if I should say so." Pausing a moment to think he then continues conversation. "How often would you like to train? Should we meet once a week, only on certain days, or.....?" He left the question open ended so she could tell him what she had in mind.

"You know better than I would how often we need to train," she stated matter-of-factly. "If you want me to, I'll apprentice myself to you totally. I don't have too many ties here, really."

Ontaros nods his head and laughs softly "Yes, I would know better than you and since I do I know that you will only train as much as you wish, not as much as I" with a small gesture he continues "so you see it is in fact your decision to make, not mine."

"I want to train as often as possible," she replied. "It's all I ever think about, nothing else matters to me." Her eyes dropped, but her voice remained steady. "I would like to travel with you, go where you go, but if that is something I cannot do, I will go somewhere else anyway. I know I barely know you, but something about the way you talk to me makes me confident. If I stay here, my parents will eventually force me into a marriage I don't want and a life I won't be able to live with." She fell silent, waiting to see what he said.

Ontaros turns around and looks up at the sky. His thoughts start to wander a bit before he walks over to the middle of the clearing and lays down on the grass. "Have you ever walked down a hallway, doors on either side of you, and simply wondered whats on the other side of them? Of course you never open them because you dont know what's on the other side or if your even allowed to. So you continue down the hall, still looking at the doors, still curious until you come across the one that you know you're supposed to go through. Be it the directions you were given to get to a certain place, or just somehow you felt it was the right door even though you werent totally sure of the directions you were given.... Have you ever hesitated to open it, not because you dont know what's on the other side, but because something in you still wants to explore the other doors first?" He doesnt even look to Kalm after having asked this. His eyes are locked on the sky and the clouds above.

Kalm followed his gaze as she pondered his question, not disturbed at all that he was avoiding answering her question directly. After several minutes of silence, she finally responded. "Yes, I have felt that way. When I first met the gypsy woman a big part of me wanted to go with her, to travel the world, but I couldn't leave home. But... you cannot follow every path, no matter how much you may want to, only your own."
