Yue (月, ユエ?) Chinese Pinyin: Yuè) is a fictional character in CLAMP's anime and manga series Cardcaptor Sakura. He is voiced by Megumi Ogata.

Name

Yue (月, Yue?) means moon in Mandarin Chinese. (The Japanese word for moon is tsuki (つき, tsuki?) but uses the same kanji.) Because his name is not of Japanese origin, Yue's name is spelled in katakana, not hiragana.

In the English anime and the later printings of the English manga, his name is romanized as "Yue" (after the Hanyu Pinyin romanization of his name). In the early English manga, his name is romanized as "Yueh" after the Wade-Giles romanization "Yüeh".

Character

Yue is the one of two Guardians of the Clow Cards, along with Cerberus. While Cerberus acts as the elector, choosing a candidate to become the next Master of the Clow, Yue is the judge who will test the candidate. He is cold and aloof and much more serious and intimidating than his counterpart, Cerberus. He shares a special bond with Clow that makes it hard for him to accept Sakura Kinomoto (Sakura Avalon in Cardcaptors) as a "replacement" for his creator although he later comes to accept her as a friend. Yue has jurisdiction over all things wind and water, the elements from which he draws his power. The known Clow Cards under his jurisdiction are Dark, Windy, Watery, Wood and Time, but also probably Wave, Rain, Storm, Cloud, Bubbles, Freeze, Mist and Snow, as they are related to the two elements Yue has under his control, wind and water.

Yue makes his first appearance when Sakura, the Cardcaptor, captures the final Clow Card, The Earthy. He then announces that he must judge Sakura's worthiness: if she can defeat him in combat, she can be the Mistress of the Cards. However, since he is another form of Yukito Tsukishiro, a young man for whom Sakura cares deeply, she is reluctant to harm him. In addition, Yue was determined that nobody succeed Clow Reed. Eventually, Sakura manages to overcome both her own fear and Yue's arrogance and wins him over.

Afterwards, Yue becomes a more active protector of Sakura. The presence of his true form becomes too great for Sakura's magic to support him, and the strain soon threatens his own existence and that of Yukito. Eriol Hiiragizawa's (Eli Moon) guardian Ruby Moon realizes that the magical powers of Toya Kinomoto (Tori Avalon), Sakura's brother, could save him, but Yukito does not (it also does not help that Yukito does not realize that he is Yue). However Toya realizes what was going on and finally offers Yue his power, securing his and Yukito's survivial.

Yue finally aids Sakura in her final confrontation with Eriol, and then confronts Eriol to ask why he was made to find a new Master while Clow Reed (albeit a reincarnation) still existed. Eriol responds that, though he has retained all of Clow's memories and most of his magic, he himself is not Clow Reed, and it was Clow's wish that Sakura be the new Master.

In the second movie, Yue aids Sakura in defeating a monster that was attacking her at the beginning of the movie. Towards the middle of the film, Yue also comforts Sakura when she despairs and weeps after a conversation with Syaoran, saying Clow Reed wouldn't have created a card that would just cause pain, sorrow and destruction, displaying his sense of compassion and sympathy. At the performance of Sakura and her class, he is one of the few people who escapes the Nothing (The Sealed Card)'s assault. At the final confrontation with the Nothing(The Sealed Card), he saves Sakura by destroying the horses of the carousel ride that the Nothing (The Sealed Card) sends at her. He also battles the Nothing (The Sealed Card), but is unable to defeat her and is soon captured. He plays no further role in the rest of the movie.

Powers, abilities, and role

Yue's appearance is that of a beautiful young man with long silver hair and violet (blue in the anime) cat-like eyes. He has a pair of angelic wings that he can use to fly.

He is a capable fighter who can raise powerful magical barriers, send deadly ice (possibly diamond) shards at his adversaries, shoot energy arrows from an energy bow that he can summon at will, in addition to other magical attacks, such as telekinesis, which he uses in Epiosode 65 to open the door Sakura was hiding behind. Yue's skill with the bow manifests itself even in his human form, as can be seen in the bow and arrow competition against the Math teacher, Kaho Mizuki. His other form, Yukito is seen firing normal arrows that unfailingly land on the bull's eye. As the final confrontation with Ruby Moon demonstrates, he is a truly formidable and deadly combatant when enraged.

Beyond his role as The Judge, Yue was also a favored companion to Clow Reed. Although it is highly speculated that Yue was in love with Clow Reed, there is no official proof of this fact. Such hints are limited to the manga. He is highly intelligent, stern, and usually cool and focused, although prone to fury when Clow or, later, Sakura is endangered.

Just what role Clow expected Yue to play in the drama surrounding his successor is unclear. He may have expected Yue to fixate on Sakura the way he had fixated on Clow himself. The false form of Yukito was clearly designed to be everything that would be attractive to Sakura, and she did harbor a massive crush on him for a very long time. However, Yukito ended up in love with Toya instead, something Clow admitted that he did not predict. Yue's consciousness is separate from Yukito's, and while Yukito cannot remember his time as Yue, Yue remembers everything that happens in his other form. He mentions that this is complicated. Despite being separate, Eriol has speculated that "their hearts are not as far apart as he believes." This is a similar belief voiced by Sakura and Toya, who both said Yue and Yukito were exactly alike, much to the confusion and embarrassment of Yue.

Character and role

Chiharu is one of Sakura Kinomoto's (Sakura Avalon in Cardcaptors) classmates in school. She, along with Rika Sasaki (Rita) and Naoko Yanagisawa (Nikki), often appear alongside Sakura at school and during school events. She is also on the school's cheerleading squad with Sakura.

In the last volume of the manga, Chiharu gives Sakura advice about love and true feelings when Sakura is confused over her feelings about Syaoran.

Relationship with Yamazaki

Despite the fact that Chiharu tends to strangle Yamazaki when he is lying, Chiharu and Yamazaki are very fond of each other; Chiharu will often comment (usually in an aside) in a way that implies she cares for him. When Chiharu makes a teddy bear in the second arc of the series, she gives it to Yamazaki, expecting that he will name it after her (following a fictional tradition where, if the recipient of a teddy bear names it after the donor, the couple will be together forever). He playfully gives it a different name instead ("Suama", after his favorite snack), which prompts another strangling, but it is understood that he is only kidding.

In the anime, Yamazaki and Chiharu are never explicitly stated to be a couple, but a close relationship between them is still evident. In Episode 17, "Sakura's Scary Test of Courage," Tomoyo mentions that they have known each other since kindergarten. Also, noted in the second book of the Clow Card arc, it is implied that Chiharu has been giving chocolates to Yamazaki since kindergarten. She then comments pointedly that it is a lovely thing to be together for such a long time. Yamazaki and Chiharu also appear frequently together outside of school. In Episode 18 they attend the festival together, and she commands him to win her a prize. She often offers to make him food in exchange for a favor or another, upon which he will jokingly say that he will prepare for getting sick from her food. This is followed by Chiharu's signature strangling of Yamazaki, during which he always laughs or smiles.

The best evidence of their relationship in the anime is in Episode 46, "Sakura and the Last Judgement," when Sakura is transported into a world where everyone forgets their feelings for the person they love most. Sakura witnesses a very polite and distant conversation between Yamazaki and Chiharu, during which Yamazaki addresses her as "Mihara-san". When Sakura asks Chiharu if he has always addressed her as such, Chiharu answers yes, adding, "After all, it's not as if we know each other very well." This complete change in relationship confirms that Yamazaki and Chiharu do love each other very much.

In Cardcaptors, to justify the random acts of strangling as mere sibling rivalry, Zachary is written to be Chelsea's cousin.

Takashi Yamazaki (山崎 貴史, Yamazaki Takashi?) is a fictional character in Clamp's anime and manga series Cardcaptor Sakura. He is known as Zachary in the English adaptation Cardcaptors.

Name

Takashi is almost always referred to by his family name, Yamazaki, as he is addressed as such by every character in the series. This is an example of common courtesy in Japanese culture, where individuals are addressed by their family name, until close familiarity allows the use of the given name. As such, all the girls in the series address each other by their given names because of their close friendship. Yamazaki additionally addresses Sakura, Rika and Chiharu by their first names.

Character and Role

Yamazaki is one of Sakura Kinomoto's (Sakura Avalon in Cardcaptors) classmates in school. He is the only named male classmate in the series besides Syaoran Li (Li Showron) and Eriol Hiiragizawa (Eli Moon). He often appears alongside Sakura at school and during school events.

Yamazaki's defining trait in the series is his ability to fabricate highly detailed stories and histories about practically any subject. His inspiration is usually what he sees in front of him or the topic of the current conversation.

The series (especially the anime) uses Yamazaki's stories as a primary element of humor during school scenes. When he speaks, everyone listens, and the background music changes appropriately. He has covered many subjects with his lies, including but not limited to: sloths, skiing, beach volleyball, calendars, and swimming competitions.

Yamazaki's stories do not last very long, as he is usually very promptly interrupted by classmate Chiharu Mihara (Chelsea). Chiharu is one of the very few classmates who never get fooled by Yamazaki's stories, and she disciplines his misleading of other students (especially Sakura and Syaoran) often by strangling his neck until he stops talking. Oddly, she is sometimes still unsuccessful and then resorts to dragging him away (by the collar).

Yamazaki gains a storytelling ally in Eriol when he joins the class in the second arc of the series. He and Eriol respond to each other's cues perfectly and can together enforce the false validity of their story by both appearing to have detailed knowledge of the subject. Here, Eriol's presence sometimes prevents Chiharu from effectively intervening and saving her classmates from a long-winded lie.

Another notable trait of Yamazaki is that he never opens his eyes (except on three occasions in Episode 13, Episode 18 and Episode 64). This trait is identified by Meiling Li (Meilin Rae) in the third episode of Tomoyo's video diary specials (titled You're great, Sakura-chan! Tomoyo's Cardcaptor Sakura Action Video Diary 3) when Yamazaki mysteriously has his eyes opened on an occasion. Meiling's hypothesis is that Yamazaki's eyes are open only when he is telling the truth. This turns out later not to be the case.

While generally viewed as lighthearted and energetic, Yamazaki can also be sensitive and serious. In the last volume of the manga, when Sakura was down in regards to her feelings toward Syaoran, he leaves the scene in order for Chiharu to talk to Sakura about the depth of her relationship with Yamazaki. Chiharu adds that he understands that Sakura needs her guidance and counseling, which is why he left so they could talk rather than stay to tell stories.

Yamazaki is brave and cares very much for Sakura and her friends. In the third season of the anime, he tries to save Rika from drowning in fierce waves.

Yamazaki's birthday is 1 July.

Yamazaki makes an appearance in another of Clamp's manga series, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, in Piffle Country as an announcer.

Notes

While Meilin plays the witch during the school play in Card Captor Sakura the anime, in the manga, it was originally Yamazaki who played that role (so well to the point that Chiharu even commented that she had known him all her life and had never seen him like that before).

In the video diaries, it is revealed that whenever Chiharu steps on his foot, he opens his eyes briefly, something which when pointed out by Chiharu, he told her that it was a reflex.

In the manga, Chiharu sometimes calls Yamazaki "lines for eyes" as he almost always has his eyes closed.

Maki Matsumoto (松本 真樹, Matsumoto Maki?) is a fictional character in Clamp's anime and manga series Cardcaptor Sakura. She is known as Maggie in the English adaptation Cardcaptors.

Character and Role

Maki was the owner of Twin Bells, a new gift shop in Tomoeda. Maki's shop sells stuffed animals, stationery, and other collectibles. Sakura Kinomoto (Sakura Avalon in Cardcaptors) and her friends shop there often, and some Clow Cards have appeared there also. The shop is built into a small apartment building, where Maki lives on the second floor.

Maki first appears in episode 5, when Sakura sees her setting up in the morning for a grand opening. She is having some trouble, though, as boxes keep falling over. In addition, one mysterious stuffed panda keeps returning to the shop every time it is bought. The panda is soon discovered to be The Jump in hiding.

Maki was previously engaged to a designer who loved plush toys. It was his dream to design toys one day and sell them all in a shop. However, he died in an accident, so Maki tries to continue this dream and run a successful shop. The incident with The Jump had caused Maki much stress in another town, as customers were accusing her of stealing toys after they were purchased. Maki closed her store there and moved to Tomoeda, hoping that the strange occurrences would not happen again. She unfortunately gets plagued again by The Jump, but Sakura soon seals the Clow Card and saves Maki's business.

Maki appears again in episode 21, "Sakura's Long Marathon Race", but she is only seen for a moment as she waves at Sakura as she passes by from the door of Twin Bells.

Twin Bells becomes the hiding place of another Clow Card, The Shot, in episode 28. Maki introduces new "enchanted cards" that grant their owners good luck, and The Shot (in card form) hides among them on the card rack.

Maki also appears in the first movie when Sakura wants to purchase a notebook for winter vacation homework. Twin Bells is part of the Tomoeda Shopping District, which has an end-of-the-year sweepstakes for customers. The grand prize is a trip to Hong Kong, which Sakura wins. Maki makes a brief non-speaking cameo in the second movie as well, handing out balloons on the day of the Nadeshiko Festival.
